Samsung has for a long a graced us with myriad of technology options making virtually all our household appliances and being great at it too. So it would be easy to say that the Smartphone company is well used to competition in the market. In the PC world though, it has had to endure stiff competition from companies in the market especially in the US.

But we can’t blame Samsung for trying, and the recent release of the Samsung Notebook 9 NP900X5N-X01US is a clear indication of effort. The new Notebook 9 carries a sweet pack of bells and whistles that are focused on getting the work done for you – faster and efficiently. It compares with the Dell XPS and MacBook Pro on more than one way, including price range.

 Samsung Notebook 9 15 2017 Review

  • Ample sized screen – 15 inch
  • Core i7 processor
  • Solid lightweight design
  • Dedicated graphics card
  • Large easy to type on keyboard and wide touchpad.

  • Poor battery life
  • Mediocre display

  • Samsung’s new version of the Samsung Notebook 9 NP900X5N-X01US Check at Amazon is clearly aimed at the heart of premium market. In fact, it flaunts most of the major features industry leading laptops have with just a few tradeoffs as drawbacks. Inclusive in the package is the advanced Core i7-7500U processor, 16GB RAM, 256GB SSD and a dedicated Nvidia GeForce 940MX graphics card, excellent Full HD display screen and upto 10Gbps USB 3.1 port for lighting fast transfers. In general, that’s all a classic example of high tech features well suited to handle virtually any task you throw at it. Samsung positions this laptop as one for business travelers which is a respectable choice with these features.

Samsung continuously flourishes in other household electronics, and the Samsung Notebook 9 NP900X5N-X01US isn’t any different. It has a premium silver finish on an anodized-aluminum chassis. The lid and other surfaces are brushed and some have a unique touch. As a result the laptop feels solid and smooth to hold which makes it enjoyable to handle but a little slippery to carry.

We did notice a little bit of flex on the keyboard and keypad, especially when pressing hard on them. And the frame also twists under pressure but both are as a result of the lightweight material used, which on the bright side lightens the weight of the laptop. The bezel is cheerfully slim unlike many traditional laptops, which gives it a premium look.

More impressive is the Samsung Notebook 9 NP900X5N-X01US 15.6 inch screen, which besides being well sized for working with also enjoys full HD resolution (1920 x 1080 pixels). You get to enjoy picture clarity and excellent 1080p video anytime when streaming video online.

It measures 13.7 x 9 x 0.6 inches and weighs 2.73 pounds which closely resembles  15-inch Apple MacBook Pro is 0.71 by 14.25 by 9.75 inches and 4.49 pounds.  Beneath the laptop are four rubber stands which provide the laptop with grip while on a surface such as table.

There are two speakers each on either side of the bottom. The speakers offer crisp clear sound and the bass is detectable and can easily get you grooving when playing music. Finally, there is a heat vent at the front center where hot air from the system escapes through. All premium notebooks work hard either to reduce heat emission or ultimately get rid of it. Fortunately, the Samsung Notebook 9 NP900X5N-X01US keeps both temperature and noise in check.

Every laptop needs a simple but great combination of ports to complete its look and effectiveness. The Notebook 9 has all these and especially has other special ports that qualify it as a state of the art device worth of premium status.

  • 2 x USB 3.0 ports
  • 1 x USB 2.0 port
  • A single Thunderbolt 3 port
  • HDMI port
  • 1 x COMBO audio jack

Wireless connectivity: Bluetooth 4.1 and 802.11 ac wireless LAN.

Something else worth mentioning is that thanks to the great port selection, you can charge it using a Smartphone cable, so getting an outlet isn’t a particular problem.

Chief among the Notebook 9’s spectacular features is the 2.7GHz Intel Core i7-7500U processor,  Intel’s Kaby lake processor made to gently optimize frequency and performance jumps. The processor has highs of 3.5 GHz during overclocking, 4MB of L2 Cache and 4MB L3 Cache. In comparison, the Dell XPS 15 Touch also features an Intel Core i7, less powerful GPU (Nvidia GeForce GTX 750M) and a similar 16GB memory.

Our unit arrived with a 256GB solid state drive and 16GB DDR4 SDRAM with a competitive 2133MHz memory speed. While the storage size is respectable and more reliable than the mechanical HDD, it is far behind the Asus ZenBook Pro UX501 which brags of 512GB. Of course the Notebook 9 SSD storage does a marvelous job for boot ups, but it would have been great to have a hard drive for extra to cover all those data hogs.

As for gaming, the Samsung Notebook 9 NP900X5N-X01US isn’t much of a gaming device. It features a Nvidia GeForce 940MX graphics unit that is mostly a mid-range graphics card. The GPU is great as an on-board card, but it doesn’t run many games especially on max settings. The best use for it is by professional on the lookout for a graphics card fitted laptop for their work. I mean, anyone dealing with photos, video and the likes.

The Samsung Notebook 9 NP900X5N-X01US offers a decent 9 hours 24 minutes on our battery test, thanks to the number of hardware crammed into it. To top that list of special features that contribute to its poor battery is the bright screen.

It can get as bright as 350 to 450 nits, making it ideal for outdoor use. But you can easily get that to 5 hours of life when doing less battery intensive tasks such as light office/ home use and the occasional YouTube video.

It’s comforting that the Samsung Notebook 9 NP900X5N-X01US See at Amazon comes with a backlit keyboard, elegant build (that’s thin and lightweight) and strong processor – which all makes it so much likable. The laptop feels immediately at home when on your lap and the screen size makes for an easy tackling of tasks be it video editing, writing or casual web browsing.

But just as fast as the hype came, so did it leave in relation to some features. The backlighting showed its distracting ugly head after a while of use and the battery revealed how long it really lasts. The backlit keyboard is decent alright, but it isn’t like the Dell XPS 15 Touch or ASUS Zenbook Pro UX501VW-US71. The light can get a little distracting and that for some can be a deal breaker.

Fortunately, there are a great number of other features which, in winding up, are more vital and Samsung didn’t drop the ball on for this laptop. I’m talking about the large 15 inch screen, fast Core i7 processor, and sturdy keyboard and keypad.

In a close roundup with the competition, the ASUS Zenbook Pro UX501VW-US71 is a comes very close to taking the crown but the Dell XPS 15 Touch emerges as our Editor’s choice for entry level desktop replacements. However, if you’re in the market for a second entry level gaming option, the Samsung Notebook 9 NP900X5N-X01US makes a good case for itself and its a great choice too.
