MSI GL62M 7RDX-1408 Review

MSI continues to rock the boat in all the fun and exciting ways in the laptop industry. From the 14 inch notebooks that pack a mean punch to the monstrous 18-inch behemoth gaming laptops with impressive mechanical keyboards, MSI continues to dazzle the gaming scene. It’s worth remembering the level of immersion MSI took gaming through the Tobii eye tracking integration on its laptops (MSI GT72S G Tobii), among other wonderful add-ons. So just like many out there, we’ve come to love these souped-up gaming machines.

Even so, the competition still offers a compelling case time and again. So occasionally we all need a review to decipher the difference. Which brings us to today’s review. Today, we put the MSI GL62M 7RDX-1408 15.6″ Full HD Thin & Light Performance Gaming Laptop on the spot light. Read the MSI GL62M 7RDX-1408 15.6” review below.

  • Appealing design and aesthetics
  • Plenty of screen estate to work with – 15 inches
  • Full HD IPS display
  • Nvidia GTX 1050 graphics card
  • Decent battery
  • Great starting price
  • Backlit keyboard

  • Simple design might not be appealing to every gamer.

The MSI GL62M 7RDX-1408 15.6″ Full HD Thin & Light Performance Gaming Laptop/Amazon brings in a well-balanced combination of premium features, well-cooled system, and an attractive price point. It’s great for multitasking when on office or home duty and can play a good list of the latest technology games. For a sub $1000 laptop, it makes a good impression and is easily recommendable for entry level gaming.

There are plenty of ports on the left side including USB 3.0s

Curved out of plastic, the MSI GL62M 7RDX-1408/ Amazon is a light and attractive laptop. It’s simultaneously sleek and ominous and just like any other MSI laptop doesn’t fail to impress. The lid isn’t contoured like most MSI gaming rigs we’ve seen, but the smoothly lined lid has a luster to it. It’s smooth and shiny and comes with a chrome MSI emblem with backlit dragon coat of arms.

Flipping the lid reveals the 15.6-inch screen and remarkable display. Speaking of, the display is Full HD which guarantees crystal clear 1080p views. You’ll definitely enjoy streaming YouTube videos and catching up with your favorite Netflix drama. The screen also enjoys great viewing angles owing to the In Plane Switching (IPS) panel. This series offers the NTSC color standard. But other series like the GP Leopard, GE Apache and GS Series offer 4k displays with nothing short of 120Hz refresh rates and 5ms response times. Still, our unit is pretty clear and the colors are vibrant for its price range.

Moving on, at 10.2 x 15.1 x 1.1 inches and weighing in at 5.3 pounds, the MSI GL62M 7RDX-1408 is slightly lighter than the glorified Acer Predator Helios 300 Gaming Laptop (5.9lbs). It weighs the same as the Acer Aspire E 15 E5-575G-57D4 Notebook and the Acer Aspire E 15 E5-575-33BM notebook. The Acer Predator Helios 300 Gaming Laptop and the Dell Inspiron 15 7000 offer more appealing aesthetics compared to this MSI, if you’re into gamer centric appeal.

The port system is well loaded with a decent balance of variety for interaction. There are 4 USB ports in total: a single USB 2.0 port, two USB 3.0 port, and one USB 3.1 USB Type-C port. Wireless communication is handled by an Intel Chip. In essence, it uses a Qualcomm Atheros AR8171-8175 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet and Intel Dual Band Wireless AC 3168 which supports the standards 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac and Bluetooth 4.0.

Additionally, you get DisplayPort 1.4, DVI-D and HDMI 2.0b connectors made available by the Nvidia GTX 1050 graphics card. Thanks to these, you can connect additional external monitors for gaming and work.

N/B The top center of the bezel is fitted with a 720p webcam proper for video conferencing and Skype calls.

We love the fact that MSI gives its laptops a fighting chance against other brands by carefully balancing its specification list. At the start, we promised to demystify why our unit slugs it out with heavy hitters in its space. So let’s dive deep into the MSI GL62M 7RDX-1408 review performance section to answer this.

Sports a strong Processor

When it comes to gaming, you need a strong processor to handle the bulk of load your processor will be put under while playing, especially the more recent titles. In that regard, you have three processor options amde for that kind of abuse; the popular Core i7-7700HQ, midrange Core i5-7300HQ or the high end and less popular Core i7-7820HK. Most gaming laptops are powered by the Core i7-7700HQ so up to this point it’s safe to say MSI put gamers in safe hands.

While the Core i7-7820 has slightly better technical specifications on paper, the Core i7-7700HQ (Kaby Lake H architecture -7th generation Core) doesn’t fall too far behind. In fact, in our opinion, the Core i7-7700HQ has enough juice to not bottleneck while playing recent titles. Simply put, the Core i7-7820K is overkill for gaming and the Core i7-7700HQ fits the bill correctly, more so for an entry level gaming notebook. On the benchmark tests, it recorded 4819 on PCMark 8, and 142 points on CineBench R15.

Aside from gaming, the processor is remarkable for multitasking tasks and enables this laptop trump over more than just gaming needs. Thanks to the Hyper-threading technology and an 8GB DDR4 RAM the MSI GL62 7RDX-1408 powers through multimedia jobs with flair. You can simultaneously work and listen to music all the while browsing the web with a dozen tabs open, without it breaking a sweat. Users with more than ordinary workloads can opt for the larger configurations or simply upgrade the memory to 16GB or 32GB maximum. I’m talking about intensive work on Photoshop, CAD or other intensely graphic loading and rendering software.

MSI did a solid by hooking this machine with plenty of storage. You get 1TB hard drive (5400RPM) and 128 GB Solid State Drive (SSD). On this front, it beats the Acer Predator Helios 300 gaming laptop (256GB SSD and the Eluktronics N857HK1 Pro-X Special Edition Gaming Laptop (128GB SSD)/ Amazon at this price range. The Dell Inspiron 15 7000 (7567) has a similar hard drive (1TB HDD) but lacks SSD, so yet again, our MSI unit thrives here.

Graphics and gaming

The best part and probably the most defining feature of this laptop is its graphics card. MSI installed the Nvidia GTX 1050 graphics card which is notably among the most favorite budget gaming GPUs around. The GPU has low power consumption and can play AAA games at Medium settings. Additionally, it is 30% better than the previous generation Nvidia GTX 960M which by many standards is good news. Working with the processor and memory, the GTX 1050 GPU delivers great frame rates while gaming. It won’t deliver almost perfect frames rates as the glorified Asus ROG Zephyrus GX501, but sure makes an impressive run for the money. Here are a few results which all point to great performance on medium 1920 x 1080 settings:

Prey 201782 fps
Mass Effect Andromeda 201743 fps
Dirt 4 201783 fps
F1 201765 fps
Battlefield 1 201690 fps

FYI – Nvidia GTX 1050 belongs to the Pascal architecture and supports DirectX 12. The GPU comes with 2GB DDR5 VRAM which makes it great for eSport performance. Also, it’s worth noting that the Acer Predator Helios 300 gaming laptop offers a stronger Nvidia 1060 GPU for slightly more dollars, but should be worth the sacrifice.

The msi gl62m 7rdx battery life goes nothing short of 3 hours 40 minutes on our tests. Yes, that sounds a little low but on a gaming laptop is very normal. You should be able to squeeze out some more juice out of it if by reducing the brightness, activating battery saver mode and perhaps doing lighter tasks on it. Gaming will most certainly drain the battery faster.

The configuration isn’t as rich as we’ve seen on other brands but there are at least four options you can go with.

MSI GL62M 7RD-1407i5-7300HQ|1050 2G|8GB|256GB
MSI GL62M 7REX-1896USi7-7700HQ | GTX 1050Ti | 8GB | 128GB SSD+1TB

Aside from great specification, premium hardware, and aesthetics, the next best thing about a gaming laptop is its capacity to handle the heat. Power consumption and cooling system have risen to become among the most sort out features in gaming laptops. And they should be because these are critical parts of the design process which without handling carefully gravely affect performance and shorten the working life for gaming rigs. If you know about cooling, then you know a good rig should be well stocked with heat pipes to dissipate the heat. Extreme performance gaming laptops have up to 15 heatpipes. Conversely, our unit comes with Cooler Boost 4 (2 Fans, 6-7 Heatpipes) meaning it’s pretty average. It has a decent grasp on temperature and so you shouldn’t have trouble with high temperature.

MSI did a good job with the Steel Series Keyboard. It comes with Red Backlighting giving it a sophisticated gamer feel. Ideally, this keyboard lights up with a red lighting but that’s not exactly RGB backlighting like the more advanced series. That means that you have a single color to choose from. I know that could be disappointing but fortunately not exactly a deal breaker. Backlighting aside, the keys come with 1.9 mm key travel for better responsive and tactile feedback.

The great thing about MSI laptops across the board is that you don’t have to worry about paying for the warranty. MSI offers free accidental-damage protection for all its laptops but here’s the catch; you have to register within 30 days. On the flipside, you pay your own shipping when sending it over for repair, but of course, the free damage protection cover trumps over shipping charges in the long run. The caveat is you have to buy the extended warranty from an authorized dealer. If you can’t find one in your locality, you always have the option of calling up MSI customer service directly.

I must say MSI did a remarkable job bringing together a state of the art laptop. This model brags of top-end quad core Intel Core i7-7700HQ processor, 8GB DDR4 memory, 2GB Nvidia GTX 1050 graphics card, 1TB of HDD and 128GB of SSD. All these are spot on features that make the MSI GL62M 7RDX-1408 gaming laptop a force to reckon with. It stands out and trumps over competition because of its abundant amount of storage. Notably, at its sub $1000 price point, it’s storage is better than the Acer Predator Helios 300, Eluktronics N857HK1 Pro-X Special Edition 15.6-Inch Gaming Laptop and the Dell Inspiron 15 7000 (7567) Gaming desktop.

As a result, it makes a great companion for users looking for a gaming laptop with plenty of storage, gaming capacity, and great price point. Even so, it doesn’t make the cut as our Editor’s Choice for entry level gaming. The Acer Predator Helios 300 Gaming laptop remains our Editor’s choice for offering more versatility and an all round performance (features Nvidia 1060 GPU). So, MSI GL62M 7RDX-1408 Gaming laptop is great but it you have a few extra bucks, the Predator Helios would make a better ally here.
