We’ve have had a good number of laptops and desktops grace our tables/ lab and the sight of the MSI GL62 7QF 1660 Laptop on my desk was a vague reminiscent of the 15-inch GE62. The GE62 is a close cousin of the MSI GL62 7QF 1660 which falls in the new line-up of GL62 line of MSI laptops. The design of the GL62 is subtle and has nothing much about it that shouts gaming; which probably the reason why people love it.
- Fast processor – 2.8GHz Core i7-7700HQ Quad-Core
- Plenty of storage – 1TB 7200 rpm HDD
- Ample screen estate – 15.6 inch
- Nvidia GeForce GTX 960M (2GB GDDR5)
- Not easy to upgrade without voiding the warranty.
- Lacks backlit keyboard.
- The MSI GL62 7QF 1660 Laptop See at Amazon is a powerhouse thanks to the GTX960 graphics card that’s onboard and the fast quad-core Kaby Lake (7th gen Core) Intel Core i7-7700HQ released earlier this year at the CES 2017. It brags of other specs like the 15.6 inch 1080p screen and 8 GB DDR4 RAM that makes it a force to reckon with. While it doesn’t come close to the ASUS ROG GL552VW-DH71 Sea at Amazon our Editor’s choice for entry level gaming, it shares some similarities with the Dell Inspiron i7559-763BLK Gaming Laptop See at Amazon. We recommend it for entry level gaming as it fits the bill just right, and is simple, reliable and basic.
DESIGN AND FEATURES
MSI decided to go take the GL62 design down a notch by making it using a modest black plastic cover unlike its cousin the MSI GE62 Apache pro-239. Still, the MSI GL62 7QF 1660 is not just about beauty and glamour and where its looks might not flirt with you, the feature packed specs will. The case leaves a decent impression and the build quality certainly meets the price. Sure it isn’t filled with red accents as is norm for some of MSI’s gaming laptops (grills, rears edges and fans); it bares its own sense of appeal.
The display comes with Full HD 15.6 inches 1920 x 1080 resolution and that has nothing less than promising picture quality. Images on the large screen estate are clear and vivid and we had a blast watching 1080p videos on YouTube. It comes with anti-glare to cut down reflections to a bare minimum as it’s supposed to be, which helps in working outdoors if you please. Thanks to the 94% NTSC Panel and 178 IPS screen, viewing angles are great; full of color and clear from both sides of the screen.
Though the display and design are not perfect or portable than most systems, it has a sturdy 15.1 x 10.2 x 1.1 inch body and weighs 5.3 pounds. It comes close to the Dell Inspiron i7559-763BLK See at Amazon built at 0.98 by 15 by 10.4 inches (HWD) and 5.88 pounds.
Routine maintenance on the MSI GL62 7QF 1660 poses a slight challenge in that there is no maintenance hatch. Apparently, one has to go through the seal to access all the screws which presents a slight problem, which however can be easily overcome with the right tool. Once the back cover is removed, the battery, the two RAM slots and the cooling system among other internals are easily accessible.
Here, MSI made sure there was a decent amount of I/O ports and we hardly had any criticism. The left section features (From left to right) a Kensington Lock, RJ45-LAN, USB 3.0, HDMI, DisplayPort, USB 3.0, USB 3.0 Type-C, microphone, headphones.
The right features the Optical drive, USB 2.0, card reader and power entry jack. While the connectivity was satisfactory, we had some little concern with the card reader because of its slower than average transfer speeds. If you’ve used a faster Card reader, you might notice the difference. Otherwise you should be fine still.
Other connectivity options that come with the MSI GL62 7QF 1660 are the WLAN 802.11 a/b/g/n for Wi-Fi with a range of up to 10 meters distance from the router.
The GL62 doesn’t mince words when it comes to the processor, it features a fast quad-core Kaby Lake (7th gen Core) Intel Core i7-7700HQ processor that was released early this year at the CES 2017. The processor core runs ideally at 2.8 GHz but has turbo boost of 3.8 GHz and cache size of L1 256 KB, L2 1024 KB and L3 cache of 6144 KB. The processor manages a CPU mark point of 8921 which is pretty decent on most scales. That means it can do pretty much anything and stay cool even after intensive hours of gaming.
Processor aside, the MSI sports an 8GB DDR4 RAM and 1TB hard drive with no SSD. For storage, that is great but honestly wanting when compared to the competition, for instance the Dell Inspiron i7559-763BLK Gaming Laptop See at Amazon. It’s a shame that you would have to contend with relatively slower boot-up time, slower sleep mode come outs and application load times.
On the gaming scene, the MSI GL62 7QF 1660 doesn’t disappoint either and is sure to achieve some solid frame rates on medium quality (1366 x 768 resolution). The Alienware 15 See at Amazon still stands as the one entry level system capable of handling most modern titles smoothly at ultra high settings (1080p). For the MSI, the 2GB GeForce GTX 960M Maxwell-graphics-unit allows it to work best at medium settings. (it offers 640 shaders units clocked at 1097 – 1202 MHz (Boost) which is similar to the GTX 950M).
We tried a few games to pace it out and Resident Evil 7 (2017) played on medium settings yielding 59.3 fps and 18.8 fps on ultra high settings respectively. Watch Dogs 2 (2016) yielded better results on medium settings (53.2 fps) as compared to ultra high settings (14.8 fps). The fixation on medium settings is partly attributed to the fact that the MSI comes with 2GB GTX 960M instead of 4GB GDDR5-VRAM. This brings us to the conclusion that this device will mostly benefit users with no much interest of playing on high settings; mostly entry level gamers.
On our battery run down tests, we got around 3 hours 46 minutes from the 6-cell battery. Low, well yes. But laptops with dedicated GPUs never offer much in the way of battery life. We ran MSI GL62 battery test while playing back a YouTube video at 720p while brightness was at 130cd/m2.
The keyboard on the MSI GL62 was also quit impressive. It offers a SteelSeries branded keyboard which is slightly different from the normal chiclet keyboard. The keys have a mechanical look and feel, have a slight click to them when typing, but the layout is conventional and gets the job done. The keyboard is not backlit and you would have to pay extra to upgrade from that.

The MSI GL62 7QF 1660 See at Amazon is a decent laptop with a satisfactory combination of specs. We appreciated MSI’s efforts to have some of the best features found in the premium laptops; Intel Core i7-7700HQ and 15.6 inch screen alongside a bright 94% NTSC Panel. The Next-generation GeForce GTX 960M was also impressive and brings smooth, high definition functionality to the notebook.
Bottom line, the MSI GL62 has a couple of neat tricks up its sleeve and reports reliable clock speeds for gaming and other graphic intensive jobs. It is a wise choice for entry level gaming as it can handle some pretty recent titles on the gaming front without getting bogged down. Besides gaming, it can run some programmes such as AutoCAD and Photoshop well which makes it comparable best to the Alienware line of gaming rigs.
While we would have loved to recommend it for hardcore gamers and performance snobs, it sad just doesn’t make the cut. But it is great for all other tasks and entry level gaming.
