Lenovo has been making laptops for years now and we mostly know them to thrive for their business laptop category. Most of the ultrabooks from them have always had a certain lean towards business and travel especially because of their strong battery life. The Lenovo Thinkpad T440p 20AN0069US See at Amazon is just one of the few we know that crosses this path.

We recently talked about the Lenovo ThinkPad Yoga 260 and the Lenovo ThinkPad T460 which incorporated great keyboards and battery life. From all these laptops and over the years experience of Lenovo laptops, it’s rather obvious that Lenovo primarily focus on functionality over form.

Verdict

  • The Lenovo Thinkpad T440p 20AN0069US  See at Amazon is a very intelligently made laptop ideal for business and travel ventures. It features a simple design, decent clock speed, a few unique features that don’t necessarily cause it to stand out. Best of all it comes with great battery life that is majorly Lenovo’s selling point for this laptop. We recommend it for business minded individuals whose main needs include a long battery runtime capable of lasting through a long-haul flight. It appeals thanks to its sharp business look, touchscreen display and a slew of other features that keep it interesting for business persons.

DESIGN AND FEATURES

If you’ve seen a ThinkPad laptop before, you should be able to notice that Lenovo seldom change designs. The main changes often span between the configurations that come with the laptops. The design is more seldom than not made out of thick black plastic which doesn’t fall very far away from the original apple tree. While the case doesn’t come with anything fancy, the magnesium alloy and carbon fiber design is made to military grade standards (built to meet Mil-Spec testing requirements).

The body runs through a number of tests before being considered fit. It’s built to withstand the highs and lows of atmospheric pressure, temperature, humidity, high drop falls and a fair among of abuse in the shape of shock, dust, and vibrations among others. A few features remain the same on the top deck; the power button is still located on the top right, finger security scanner next to the right arrow button of the keyboard and the keypad slightly leans to the left.

The bottom is graced with four corner rubber stands to ensure the laptop doesn’t slide off the table. Should you need to replace the 2.5 hard drive with an upgrade unfortunately there isn’t a hatch to go through. You will have to go remove the whole bottom to access the components. On the bright side, you can also access other components while at it: cooling vents, heat pipe exchanger and fan. There is a 2.5 inch hard drive bay like mentioned to upgrade the memory and the BIOS battery is easily accessible through here.

Compared to its predecessor the Lenovo ThinkPad T430 premium laptop, the T440p is a significantly thinner and lighter device. This marks an improvement to the design which gives it a high quality appeal. Moving on, the T440p display is made of a TN HD panel with a decent resolution of 1366×768 pixels. Lenovo ThinkPad T440S comes with a better IPS panel with 1920 x 1080 resolution which is comparatively generous especially with viewing angles. We had no issue with its dimensions and weight. It’s not completely lightweight at 4.7 pounds but you can still get around with it.

Lenovo T440p i5 Performance

Lenovo introduced a new processor for this laptop to replace thick laptop devices that held the realm back in 2013. The Lenovo T440p features a 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5-4200M processor based on the Haswell architecture. It has two cores and can handle as much as 3.1 GHZ on Turbo Boost. This processor is quite an improvement from the predecessor ThinkPad T430 which was equipped with a high chip Intel Core i7-3520M (2.9 up to 3.6 GHz).

Lenovo located a 4 GB DDR3L SDRAM-1600 SODIMM memory on this laptop. It works hand in hand with 500 GB Serial ATA-600 storage which goes about its business pretty quietly for a conventional HDD. In today’s standard 500 GB might not even solve half of your storage needs but external storage could probably help. Thanks to the lower powered processor and 4GB memory, the Lenovo Thinkpad T440p remains at cool comfortable temperatures and mostly uncritical when straining through loads of work.

On the gaming scene, the Lenovo Thinkpad T440p features an Intel HD Graphics 4600 graphics card. We tested a handful of games like the Ghost Recon Wildlands 2017 which managed 11.3 fps on low 1280 x 720 settings and 6.8 fps on 1366×768. On the other hand Watch Dogs 2 2016 had an approximate value of 9.9 fps and Call of Duty Infinite Warfare 2016 managed 16.4 fps on 1280 x 720 settings. Dishonored 2 2016 and Mass Effect Andromeda 2017 were not playable and didn’t register any frames when tested.

In summary, this graphics card isn’t designed for graphic intensive gaming especially on recent titles. It works with older titles from 2013 and 2014. Far Cry 4 2014, Assassins Creed Unity 2014, Civilization: Beyond Earth 2014 and Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare 2014 are games (from 2014) worth trying as they have slightly better frames results. The GPU holds up well against most applications except video editing and gaming.

Battery life

Battery life has always been Lenovo’s turf and for a long time they have remained the all time champs in battery longevity. Lenovo offers a set of two battery configurations for this Lenovo Thinkpad T440p. The basic option is two batteries, one of which is integrated into the laptop system and not removable and the second a removable one. With both batteries, the Lenovo Thinkpad T440p manages 4 hours almost enough to take you through half a day’s work.

CONCLUSION

Compared to the ThinkPad T430, the Lenovo Thinkpad T440p 20AN0069US See at Amazon is improved and more honorable. It is equipped with a better processor which guarantees faster clock speeds but with a significantly reduced power consumption. In comparison with rivals in the industry now, the T440 still doesn’t make the cut as a high performer. Our Editor’s choice for business laptops still remains the Lenovo ThinkPad T460s but the ThinkPad T440 is a good workhorse for a lower market price.
