Lenovo IdeaPad Miix 510-12ISK 80U1006DUS | See at Amazon is laptop/tablet from the Ideapad Series. It follows closely to the footsteps laid by Microsoft Surface Pro 4. Lenovo shows a lot of promise thanks to better connectivity options, advanced SSD but fails to seal the deal when it comes to the display and camera.
From a performance perspective, it is a supercharged version of the Lenovo ideapad miix 700 80QL0020US 2-in-1 Laptop/Tablet | Amazon which also closely followed in the footsteps of the MS Surface Pro 4 2-in-1 PC. The one surge of brilliance the Mix 700 has over other Miix 510 is quiet system thanks to the low-performance m-core processors. Today we take a look at what makes the Lenovo IdeaPad Miix 510-12ISK 80U1006DUS so special.
- Great design and lightweight
- Fast processor – 2.5GHz
- Full HD 12 inch Display
- Backlit Keyboard cover
- Connectivity options- both USB 3.0 and USB-C ports available
- Occasional fan noise
- Active Pen is not included-got to pay extra
- Short battery life
- The Lenovo IdeaPad Miix 510-12ISK 80U1006DUS | Amazon is a great Windows tablet that thrives in the field of laptop replacements. Just like the recently reviewed Microsoft Surface Pro 4 and the Lenovo ideapad miix 700 80QL0020US 2-in-1 Laptop/Tablet, the Miix 510 provides both productivity and portability. We loved the Lenovo Miix 510 because it built a strong framework from its predecessors unlike the Lenovo Ideapad Miix 700 which always plays second fiddle to the Surface Pro 4. Chief among its vital improvements is the added memory, more SSD storage options and future proof connectivity (USB 3.0 Type –A and USB C). It blends well as our Editor’s pick for mid-range tablets.
DESIGN AND FEATURES
Lenovo used an aluminum chassis to create the chassis – a welcome idea in our books, as it increases the sturdiness we’ve all come to love. Of course this would make the overall weight of the device heavier than expected but that is a small price to pay if durability is anything to go by. Just like the Microsoft Surface Pro 4 design, Lenovo spared no effort in making it as neat and as firm as possible. The unit hardly wobbles and the edges resist normal bending attempts even when we tried with both hands.
Just like the Lenovo ideapad miix 700 80QL0020US, our reviewed unit enjoys an engineering fete hinge. The wrist watch design hinge that was fitted is nothing short of glorious and is superior to the kickstand found in major industry brands such as the Microsoft Surface Pro 4, HP Elite x2 1012 tab and Acer Aspire Switch Alpha 12. The kickstand system basically is a rigid part of the back frame that can be propped out to support the tab as it rests on a work surface.
The kickstand swings visibly to through a 170 degrees arc to suit whichever angle you use while working; whether you’re lying down or standing. You can use it comfortably on your lap too, which often is most people’s option.
The display looks nice and holds up well even under dim-lit rooms (comes with 300 nits. Surface Pro 4 has 382 nits and Switch Alpha 12 offers 432 nits). The screen measures 12.2 inches and works with an LED-lit panel that is IPS enabled for better viewing experience and wider angle views (up to 45 degrees on either side). Thanks to the Full HD (1920 X 1200) images are clear and vivid so you can have a blissful time streaming online. Comparatively, that’s a lower resolution than the Miix 700’s (2,160 by 1,440) and the Surface Pro 4 highest resolution (2736 x 1824 pixels).
The touchscreen was also excellently responsive and it supported multi-touch gestures like a charm. Using the Lenovo IdeaPad Miix 510-12ISK 80U1006DUS in the office was easy especially taking short notes and scribbling (you’ll need to buy the Active Pen for that). I was glad to note how impressively it responded to sensitive touch, rather accurately even with the Active Pen. It has the hallmark of a modern tablet and gives the Surface Pro 4 a run for its money.
On other matters, the Miix 510 measures a sane amount of inches measuring 11.8 x 8.1 x 0.4 without the keyboard and 11.8 x 8.1 x 0.6 with the keyboard inclusive. In a belt test, it starts from 1.98 lbs (900 g) (tablet only) and 2.65 lbs (1.25 kg) with the keyboard inclusive. Well, that’s not anywhere close to a brick but that’s a bit larger and heavier than the Miix 700, but comparable to the Acer Switch Alpha 12.
If you’re already used to a laptop, the port selection on the Miix 510 is more dynamic compared to the Lenovo ideapad miix 700 80QL0020US. You’ll find two USB ports, one USB 3.0 port and one USB 3.0 Type-C which the Surface Pro lacks. With these you’re set to handle any memory stick; flash drives, printers… If you however which to upgrade your connectivity situation, we recommend the USB-C docking station. The left side houses the jack for the AC adapter.
Wireless connectivity is via the 802.11ac WiFi network card and Bluetooth 4.0.
Lenovo Miix 510 i5 Performance
The 2.3-GHz Core i5-6200U processor on the Miix 510 makes it one of the few Windows tablet to have fast clock speeds and great productivity while at it. The other plethora of devices that have his Skylake processor are the Surface Pro 4 and Switch Alpha 12. The processor is coupled with an 8GB RAM and 256 SSD for storage.
As a result the tablet is able to cruise seamlessly through multitasking tasks without breaking a sweat. On high gear it can overclock as far as 2.8GHz before it reaches thermal limits at which point it would start to overheat.
The keyboard is inclusive when you buy this tablet. It uses the common magnetic latch to hold on to the tablet’s under side from which point it also transmits signals through. The fact that the Miix 510 keyboard is not sold separately gives it an edge over the Surface Pro 4. The Huawei MateBook tablet uses a similar keyboard but works with Bluetooth which compared to magnetic hatch is not secure (in terms of hacking if not properly encrypted).
Lenovo reports 1.5 mm travel on keys and 55-gram actuation force. The keyboard is also backlit keyboard and works hand in hand with a precision touchpad. The touchpad measures 3.3 x 1.8-inches and offers great response for every touch. Gestures like two finger scrolling worked without issue.
Lenovo IdeaPad Miix 510 Battery life
Moving on to battery life, the Lenovo IdeaPad Miix 510-12ISK 80U1006DUS comes with a 2-cell Lithium Ion (Li-Ion) battery which of all features is its biggest downside. The Miix 510 fails to stand out among its rivals because of low battery life – 5 hours 23 minutes. The Surface Pro 4 and HP Spectre x2 both registered above 6 hours of life.
The rear Camera/Webcam is 5 Megapixel (2560 x 1440) which is quite sufficient for vacation snapshots. But if you’ve owned a Smartphone before, you can definitely work better with it for fast snap action. In fact, some Smartphone cameras out-do this webcam by a mile. Meanwhile, the front facing webcam has (1600 x 900) which by many standards is also low resolution. Unfortunately, many other webcams fall in this bracket too.
While some may consider some software Bloatware, Lenovo considers the software as added value which in our opinion is right. There are some interesting software which might come in handy when using the tab. Here’s a list:
- Lenovo™ ID- offers access to exclusive Lenovo offers
- Lenovo™ Always Online
- Lenovo™ App Explorer for FPC
- Lenovo™ CCSDK
- Lenovo™ WRITEit
- Lenovo™ PC Manager
- Lenovo™ Cloud Disk

In the un-ending race to mimic and out-do the Microsoft Surface Pro 4, the Lenovo IdeaPad Miix 510-12ISK 80U1006DUS | Amazon presents the best case to win the cup. It presents an improved version of features that clearly reveals Lenovo miix 700’s late arrival for the on-ramp. I’m talking about an impressive blend of performance, features and bang for buck. It also has double memory and storage allocation that appeals to the masses.
The Lenovo ideapad miix 700 80QL0020US 2-in-1 | Amazon brags of low-wattage processor and fanless system, but the Miix 510 counters that with a faster Core i5 processor. The Miix 510 is by all means a worthy opponent and for the price we recommend it to anyone looking for a Surface Pro 4 alternative.
