Lenovo Ideapad 500S (80Q30032US) Laptop Review
The Lenovo Ideapad 500S 80Q30032US is a new 14-inch laptop made to impress budget buyers with a taste for svelte, compact and lightweight systems. Its specs speak of a mid-tier budget laptop ideal for the home and office, also making a favorable impression among the student category of user. Find out more about it right here.
- Great 14-inch screen that’s significantly large for getting creative
- Has backlit keyboard for working through dark-lit rooms
- Screen is touchscreen
- Excellent graphics and processing power
- Decent battery life.
- Mediocre gaming performance
The 14 inch Lenovo Ideapad 500S 80Q30032US is a lightweight model laptop designed with portability in mind, and as a matter of fact is Lenovo’s selling point for this series. Besides weight and size, it brags of a fast 2.3GHz processor with Turbo Boost of 2.8GHz, 8GB RAM and 1TB HDD. It does have a few tradeoffs which while not entirely negligible are not a deal breaker considering it sells for a budget price.
DESIGN AND FEATURES
The design of the Lenovo is sleek and svelte. The chassis has a slice of sophistication to it with its polished black finish that spans throughout the entire chassis. The bezel is slightly wide just as a traditional laptop and holds the Lenovo logo at the bottom center of its frame. This design is fine and compact and for that reason, Lenovo seemed to desire to keep it that way. Its a predecessor to the Lenovo Ideapad 510s 80UVOO1AUS and the Lenovo Ideapad 510s – 80TK002GUS from the Lenovo Ideapad 510 version. (The successor maintained the design, changed the color to silver and boosted graphics to HD Graphics 620 and the processor to Core i5-7200U).
The Lenovo Ideapad 500S 80Q30032US build is respectable to say the least. It doesn’t brag of an exaggerated, design or finish, but it the calmness of simplicity, appeals to the senses profoundly. The 14-inch Full HD display has a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixel, thus offering sufficient levels of bright and images/video quality. Sadly, its display does not support touch-screen inputs.
Dimensions and hinges
It measures 13.4 x 0.8 x 9.4 inches and weighs 3.7 pounds which makes it great for carrying around to class if you’re a student. It’s one of the more light laptops in its category considering most weigh 5 pounds and above. So if you’re thinking to transition from a heavy laptop with fair price and performance, you have an ally here. It does fit a bag or carry on easy thanks to its dimensions but it’s not exactly ideal for travel or as a business laptop.
We recommend laptops with stronger battery life for that category or at least a laptop with interchangeable battery option. Such laptops allow battery to be changed but still remain on while changing which the battery which is the aspect in focus here.
Moving on, we loved the Lenovo Ideapad 500S 80Q30032US hinges too. The hinges are a little different from your ordinary laptop. It is a complete block that sprawls a few inches from the left edge, across the center all the way to the right leaving a few inches to spare on the right as well. While they are not 360 hinges that allow it to flip to tablet mode, like the Asus Chromebook Flip, Microsoft Surface Book or the Asus ZenBook Flip UX360, it actually allows 180 degree contortion. That makes the laptop easy to use on the bed when you’re lying down and need it flat on the surface.

The Ideapad has a total of 3 USB ports; two USB 3.0s and one USB 2.0.The rest of the ports which make it a standard port selection include HDMI port out, Card Reader and an Rj-45 LAN port.
Other connectivity options are the Bluetooth 4.0 and 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac wireless Card which allow fast internet connections to your laptop. Sometimes users might find it annoying trying to fix an external screen, charge the laptop and have USB connections all simultaneously. In such instances we recommend using Universal Port Replicator or docking stations to stem the problem. Additionally, right at the front edge is a 4-in-1 card reader (SD, SDHC, SDXC, MMC)) for extra storage, should you have a digital camera or simply need to transfer some photos or videos to your laptop.
For all webcam users, it sports a 720p webcam coupled with an Array Microphone. The webcam is pretty standard and images weren’t as sharp as we would want them to be. However, it does deliver when it comes to conference calls or Skype calls, and you’re sure to see the other party clearly.
Lenovo brags of an Intel Core i5-6200U processor code-named “Skylake” that’s great for multitasking. Skylake chips allow up to 2.5x the raw performance, 30x the graphic and 3x the battery life which is exactly what this laptop needs. Every laptop we’ve tested with this processor has performed outstandingly. We sampled the Lenovo MIIX 700, a convertible with modest Core M processors and the results were awesome as expected.
Lenovo Ideapad 500S 80Q30032US features an 8 GB DDR3L SDRAM which works perfectly for ordinary home and office work. Ordinarily, 8GB is sufficient and chances are you won’t need to upgrade it.
If the RAM allotted feels a little low, you can augment it for some extra RAM. Lenovo hasn’t specified how far the maximum amount supported is. But there is a RAM slot available to handle should you need to get more.
Additionally, the 1TB storage can be bumped up by replacing with a larger SSD. SSDs can cost quite a penny compared to HDD, but for if performance is your main goal, then consider SSD as it surely brings in the A-game here. Meaning, faster access times and boot times which definitely improve efficiency. Alternatively, if you don’t have cash to spare, the 1TB of HDD is perfect. But consider changing the 5400 rpm to 7200 rpm for better performance.
It comes with a pre-installed Windows 10 Home which is standard across the board for this series of laptops. However, if you wish to upgrade to the Windows 10 Pro, you don’t need to reinstall the OS like traditional laptops did in the past. For the upgrade, just enter the COA (product key) for Windows pro in the system and it should start installing on its own.
Lenovo Ideapad 500S Battery
The system uses a 4-Cell lithium (Ion) Polymer battery with a capacity of 2520 mAh. On our battery test which involves streaming YouTube videos on numerous tabs. The Lenovo Ideapad 500S battery lasted 5 hours 34 minutes to drain out flat. In comparison to other 15 inch laptops, that was less than decent.
Naturally, larger screen laptops with QHD drains more battery than usual. FHD drains but not as much in relation to QHD. For this case, since it is still 15 inch, you damn right should expect some drain. So, when this Lenovo hands out almost similar results to previous 15 inch laptops we’ve reviewed, it raises questions. Well, it’s not exactly catastrophic, but it would have been great to have a notebook you could make your rounds with without having its charger – it just makes life easier.

So, what’s our take on the Lenovo Ideapad 500S price?
My final thoughts on the Lenovo Ideapad 500S 80Q30032US is that this machine is everything you need in a new laptop. It proudly has decent graphics, speed, huge storage capacity, great screen estate and great polished build. Ideally, it has the versatility to be really useful for most day to day home and office work and the price is very affordable.
As for the negatives, it also has a few tradeoffs but fortunately they aren’t so many. To attain premium mid-ranged status, Lenovo should have at least included an SSD flash storage for faster boot times, touchscreen and keyboard backlighting. And for all the gamers out there, a graphics processing unit would have been ideal too; although I doubt if that would have kept the price within budget.
You can ignore some, if not all, of these drawbacks depending on how you plan to use it but in the end, with or without the drawbacks it still remains a worthy laptop to recommend.
