It compares relatively well to other high performance laptops with high social awareness, that you probably might have had of. Moreover, it sells for a price that won’t leave you feeling ripped off or even later complaining about glaring tradeoffs. Read the Lenovo Ideapad 310 (80ST001MUS) review to get more.

  • The Lenovo Ideapad 310 (80ST001MUS) | See at Amazon is a decent laptop with an amazing list of specs for its price, but it won’t wow you with its looks. Simply put it’s not the Bugatti Veryon of laptops, but for its class it pumps enough horsepower to cruise through tasks with flair. You get 8GB RAM for multitasking, 1TB 5400RPM HDD storage and 15.6 inches (1366×768 resolution) for pure screen goodness. Politely put, it is unassuming and will blend in among other laptops in the classroom, café or boardroom. As a result, it comes highly recommended as a budget home and entertainment laptop.

We would have loved to say great things about the Lenovo Ideapad 310 (80ST001MUS); that it’s a head-turning laptop that will drop your jaws on first sight. But unfortunately, it’s not. Well, let’s leave such comments for premium builds like the HP Spectre x360 13 and the Lenovo Yoga 910. Even so, it is impressively crafted nonetheless. The Lenovo Ideapad features an amazing chassis made of hard plastic that’s neither weak or have a cheap feel to it. The cover, bezel and top deck are all black, which blends well with everything (I love dark shades) and takes a leaf some of its competition; for instance the Acer Aspire E 15 E5-575-33BM with similar black accents.

That aside, the display is 15.6 inches with a 1366×768 resolution with promise of blissful clarity and sharp video. Well the competition kicks our unit right out of the water with better resolution, but it’s nothing too far to be really worried about. I’m talking about the Acer Aspire E 15 E5-575-33BM and HP Notebook 15-ay011nr 15.6-Inch Laptop’s 1920 x 1080 resolution displays. On the bright side though, they all flaunt IPS displays which is a promise for great viewing angles.

Moving on, in terms of size, the Lenovo Ideapad 310 (14.92 x 10.24 x 0.9 inches, 4.84lbs) is slightly smaller than its competition. Both the Acer Aspire E 15 E5-575-33BM (15.02 x 10.2 x 1.19 inches) and HP Notebook 15-ay011nr 15.6-Inch Laptop(15.12 x 10.02 x 0.95 inches, 4.65lbs) are slightly larger with the Acer Aspire E 15 E5-575-33BM (5.27lbs) leading the pack as the heaviest.

Every laptop requires a way to transfer files and data in and out from other devices. The Lenovo Ideapad 310 (80ST001MUS) is equipped with three USB ports (a single USB 3.0 and others), a HDMI and VGA port located on the side. Other connectivity options include the 802.11ac WiFi + Bluetooth wireless card. There is also an optical drive at your disposal for handling your games, movies and software. The optical drive can also be another option for saving your files for later use. Alternatively, there is a memory card reader should you require need to transfer your photo gallery from your digital camera.

The specifications and features of this laptop make it a laptop for everyone. Out of everything it presents, the 2.4 GHz Quad core AMD A10-9600P processor impressed us the most. The processor is an AMDs 7th APU generation is named Bristol Ridge created for efficiency and speed. The laptop offers good components including 8GB DDR4 memory (upgradeable to 12GB), 1TB of storage sufficient for storing your movies, music and important files. Compared to other models in the market, the Acer Aspire E 15 E5-575-33BM offers the best and closest specs to our unit. But for users looking to combine faster Solid State Drive SSD to the already existing hard drive space, the Acer Aspire E 15 E5-575G-57D4 makes a better alternative.

From experience, we know that many users start evaluating the performance of their laptop’s solid state hybrid drive or hard drive by checking the RPM. Well, we won’t deny you any facts here. Our unit sports 1TB storage with 5400RPM speeds. That’s plenty of room to store and work on and consequently transfer your data at a fast rate too.

Gaming performance on the Ideapad 310 is mediocre and you shouldn’t expect much for triple A titles. However, that was expected owing to the fact that it doesn’t come with a dedicated graphical processing unit. Due to the budget oriented design, the Ideapad isn’t a fast or competent gamer and it’s best to keep it within home entertainment tasks and light office work. Despite being a low-tiered laptop, the 8GB should still give an excellent multitasking experience; best for handling background apps while simultaneous editing photos and web browsing even on a couple of open tabs.

Besides from our reviewed unit, there are other configurations available with variations between processors and RAM vs. storage size. We made a list to break them down:

Battery life

As for battery life, Lenovo advertises 5 hours, but it should give you about 4 to 5 hours. The battery is not removable (integrated battery) which can also be a challenge if you need to replace it, but overall the laptop has moderate battery usage and you won’t need to upgrade any time soon.

Why you should Care

Despite its cheaper looks and subtle appearance, the Lenovo Ideapad 310 (80ST001MUS) is surprisingly sturdy. While most laptop screens will flex easily, the Ideapad 310 won’t unless under direct pressure when dropped or leaned on by heavy objects – which is a rarity. It offers great screen resolution (1366 x 768 pixels), plenty of screen estate (15.6 inches), fast AMD processor and plenty of storage (1TB with other variations available). You won’t be able play triple A games, but it will be a reliable office laptop and entertainment machine for you and your family. So does it make it to our Editor’s Choice list? Well, no but we don’t entirely cancel it out.

The Acer Aspire E 15 E5-575-33BM remains our Editor’s Choice for home and office laptops, but our reviewed unit makes a quick dash for the cash as well. The only glaring difference for these two laptops is that the Acer Aspire E 15 E5-575-33BM has better screen resolution (1920 x 1080 pixels) and costs $20 less. The Lenovo Ideapad 310 comes in close with similar specs, stronger 8GB memory but costs $20 more than the Acer Aspire E15.
