Lenovo Ideacentre Y900 90DD0075US Gaming Desktop

The Lenovo Ideacentre Y900 90DD0075US Gaming Desktop is a spruced up desktop iteration of the previous Lenovo Ideacentre Y900 that featured last year for its Nvidia GeForce GTX 970 graphics card. Since the tech giant made these improvements, the Y900 changed its wishy-washy stance to become a VR ready demigod; a force to reckon with in gaming.

That’s ostensibly owing to the Nvidia GeForce 1080 graphics unit; perhaps the most brazen example of Lenovo’s underlying intentions to take lead of the PC industry. Check out the review for more details.

  • Impressive design
  • Nvidia GeForce 1080 graphics unit
  • VR ready and gaming icon PC

  • No future proof USB Type-C port
  • Expensive starting price

VERDICT

Lenovo makes an audacious statement with the Lenovo Ideacentre Y900 90DD0075US gaming Desktop Check at Amazon. Its design is among the most bodacious in our list of best gaming desktops 2017, and it features a list of high-end hardware that are the reason for its boundless success in the gaming arena. I’m talking about 4GHz Core i7-6700K processor, 16GB DDR4 RAM, 128GB SSD + 1TB HDD, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 DDR5 8GB DDR5 and a clean installation of Windows 10 OS. It receives our Editor’s approval for value for money gaming desktop.

DESIGN AND FEATURES

Desktop designs have a tendency of mimicking unsightly extraterrestrial themes and the Lenovo Ideacentre Y900 unapologetically assumed these themes. It’s has a show off design built to demand your attention. The front face is made of carbon fibre and its shiny bottom is complemented by Y-shaped LED lighting that dazzles in the dark. The right side panel has a Plexiglas that lets you have a peek through into the glowing graphics card and fans.

It’s a marvel to the eyes and should cause a stir among friends, especially if they’re seeing it for the first time. The panel is also home to the ventilation system vents which let in cold air into the case for thermal management.

Measuring 19.8 x 18.8 x 8.1-inches, the Y900 isn’t exactly as towering as we’ve seen in other reviewed desktops. Desktops in its category include the Alienware Aurora R5, Corsair one pro (14.96 by 6.9 by 7.87 inches (HWD)), Lenovo Ideacentre Y710 Cube (12.38 by 9.93 by 15.48 inches (HWD)) and the Acer Predator G1-710-70003 (16.46 by 4.33 by 13.70 inches (HWD)) among others. The Y900 shares a similar right side panel window design with the Alienware Aurora R5 and CYBERPOWERPC.

The design is pretty accommodative for technophobic gamers who always need to update their machines consistently. The side panel allows quick and easy access to the interior without necessarily having to use a tool-kit. It’s a joy removing the hard drive from its bay since all you need is a quick push, but you’ll need to have a screwdriver to exchange the graphics cards.

PORTS

Lenovo wasn’t slack in providing a great port system, and if not for the lack of at least a single future proof port, the system would have made an almost perfect connectivity system. Still, the ports available are plenty. The front Ports: 7-in-1 Card Reader (SD/SDHC/SDXC/MMC plus/MMC/MS/MS_Pro), 2 x USB 2.0, 2 x USB 3.0 (1st port supports always-on USB charging), 2 Audio/Microphone Jack

In addition, the rear has other ports: You should find four extra USB 3.0 ports, two more USB 2.0 ports, an Ethernet port and single PS/2 connector to cover older keyboards and mice. You should be able to find a suite of audio ports which take care of line in/out, subwoofer, center, microphone and S/PDIF. The motherboard itself brings to the table its own host of HDMI, DVI and VGA ports, while the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 graphics card offers three DisplayPorts, DVI and VGA connectors.

Optical Drive: DVD±RW

Other connectivity options include 802.11ac Wireless LAN, Bluetooth 4.0

PERFORMANCE

Aside from a high-profile design, the Y900 also features the industry leading 4.0 Intel Core i7-6700K Quad-Core Processor with 4.2GHz turbo frequency (2133MHz 8MB). If for whatever reason you decide to give gaming a rest, the Y900 is great at juggling a bunch of tasks as a result of the 16GB DDR4 RAM (2133 MHz). You can download a game while listening to your favorite music online and simultaneously run work on Photoshop without experiencing a slothful performance. As for storage, the Y900 made it attempt for the debut with 128GB flash storage and 1TB hard drive storage.

While the storage is plenty and resourceful, especially the HDD, it falls a little behind the pack. The vanquish 4 brings in a competitive 250GB SSD which is by all means more apt for booting and loading the Operating System and software. While still on the same topic, the Acer Predator G1-710-70003 desktop brings to the table more storage (2 TB HDD/ 512 SSD) while the Lenovo Ideacentre Y710 Cube offers the same storage space. Both the Corsair one and HP Omen X offer better options but they cost more.

On the gaming front, the Ideacentre Y900 handles games with the new 8GB DDR5 Nvidia GeForce 1080 Founders Edition. Before we get into how impressive it is in gaming, it manages connectivity using 3 DisplayPorts 1.4, a single HDMI 2.0b and DVI out connectors. With these you can play hard while connected to your HDTV or even three more other monitors.

The GTX 1080 graphics card performed brilliantly during our gaming tests. We cranked up the settings and threw a couple of gaming titles and well… it gobbled them up, after all it is the fastest single chip GPU. However, playing 4K while on the highest possible setting still didn’t prove stutter proof especially on demanding scenes. But we reckon you can still enjoy 4K resolution playing games like Tomb Raider and Crysis 2 on slightly lower settings and still end up with fine frame rates.

The results on 4K and maximum settings were: Need for Speed 2016 (47 fps), The Division (38 fps), Star Wars Battlefront (60 fps) and Battlefield 4 (57 fps). All other games played on the second highest setting (ultra 1920 x 1080 setting) managed more than 60 fps with some hitting the performance ceiling of more than 100 fps.

A strong desktop requires reliable power supply unit to handle all the power needs. The Y900 adds real boost to your machine with a strong 625W PSU that’s ideal for working through ultra high-powered tasks while keeping things cool. The PSU is located on the lower side of the PC and takes up a reasonable amount of the 34 Liter chassis. Speaking of which, we loved the clean interior design of the innards.

The wire management is well done and the black accentuates of the components & case brings the machine an organized appeal. There’s plenty of room too for expandability and the hardware is tool-free compatible which makes the former effortless to do.
