The beauty with technology is that it gets better and better with each passing day. Laptops have become sophisticated and their old desktop counterparts have also adopted burgeoning technology whole cloth. At some point one might have thought desktops would become extinct with the rise of specialized laptops, each for a specific user audience – but no, that didn’t happen. Desktops live on, and they too have adopted the hight specialization that laptops have. Its no longer a case of one size fits all.

The Lenovo Ideacentre Y720 Cube 90H2003NUS Desktop is one such example – built specifically for gamers. Suffice it to say, its minimalistic design makes it suitable for a host of environments, be it work or home office. It mirrors the Lenovo Ideacentre 710 Cube that we reviewed, sharing the same chassis and looks but differing slightly in the internals. Find out why we love it – Lenovo Ideacentre Y720 Cube 90H2003NUS.

The Lenovo Ideacentre Y720 is a small-sized desktop, nothing as small as the Alienware Alpha R2 or the Intel NUC Kit NUC6i7KYK, but small enough to be portable. It measures 15.5 x 12.4 x 9.9 inches and has a handsome gladiator themed enclosure that’s perhaps its biggest selling point. It’s quite easy to open it since all you have to do is remove the panels and you’re in.

Repair and upgrade might be a slightly problematic considering the hood is packed to the brim and there isn’t a sliding or articulating arm like the Dell XPS Tower Edition; hence limited access and expandability options. The cable management was a great job though and we had no qualms with it. Check out the Lenovo Ideacentre Y710 Cube review where we gave a thorough description of the design.

We’ve not had a problem with Lenovo products in terms of ports and this desktop has a decent set. The port system is however a little slack because there are hardly any futuristic ports. Perhaps the Thunderbolt 3 and USB-C ports would have covered this desktop for at least three years.

The rear is fitted with an array of ports; four USB 3.0 ports, four USB 2.0 ports, five 3.5 mm audio jacks, Gigabyte Ethernet (802.11 ac Wi-Fi included too) and optical S/PDIF. If you own older model machines there is a PS/2 mouse and keyboard port to cover that.

The Lenovo Ideacentre Y720 Cube is a lower tier of the Y710-15ISH desktop, but in spite of its subdued specifications, it packs a lethal assembly of features capable of handling a load of tasks and gaming. It is fitted with an absurdly high-tech 3.9 GHz Intel Core i3 processor, 8 GB DDR4 memory and 1TB Mechanical Hard Drive storage.

The high-end version, Lenovo Ideacentre Y710 Cube 15ISH has a core i7-6700 processor, 16 GB memory, 128 GB solid state drive, 1TB HDD and the VR ready Nvidia GeForce 1080 with 8GB DDR5. On paper alone, the Y710 outdoes our reviewed unit and has a stronger processing unit which translates to better clock speeds. The Y720 features the recently released (January 2017)Nvidia GeForce 1050Ti graphics unit which is pretty swift as well.

The Y720 compares closely with the CYBERPOWERPC Gamer Xtreme VR GXiVR8020A2 Desktop Gaming PC and CYBERPOWERPC Gamer Ultra GUA4500A desktop. The former features a 4GB AMD RX 480, similar 8GB DDR4 RAM and 1TB 7200rpm hard drive among others.

That aside, the Nvidia GeForce 1050Ti is one mainstream GPU with enough oomph to create ripples on the gaming scene. Even though the Lenovo Y710 offers a faster and more potent GTX 1080, the GTX 1050Ti on our reviewed unit made quite an impression on our gaming tests and is not that far behind in performance. With 768 shaders units and 4GB GDDR5-VRAM, this Pascal architecture was able to handle some of the most graphic intensive titles with flair. It handled most games from 2016 in high settings and hardly minding the Full HD resolution we set.

  • Prey (2017) – 67.2 fps on ultra high 1920 x 1080 settings
  • For Honor 2017 47.9 fps on ultra high 1920 x 1080 settings
  • Dishonored 2 (2016) – 41 fps on ultra high 1920 x 1080 settings
  • Call of Duty Infinite Warfare (2016) 59 fps on ultra high 1920 x 1080 settings
  • Titanfall 2 (2016) – 60 fps on ultra high 1920 x 1080 settings

All the 2016 titles managed to play above 60 fps on medium 1366 x 768 settings with some even hitting above 80 fps.

There is plenty to love about the Lenovo Legion Y720 Tower. There are a variety of features to go around; a fast performance processing core i3, 8 GB memory, 1TB HDD and a state of the art Nvidia GTX 1050Ti graphics unit. All this allow for sharp graphics, lag and stutter free gaming, and reliably fast controls while handling gaming.

What we loved most is that it plays recent titles with rates up to 4K HD and packs enough memory for multitasking. You also won’t get disappointed comes with the auspicious design, ventilation system and small footprint perfect for portability. Bottom line, it’s a great desktop for gaming and easily recommendable.
