Looking for a desktop? Are your computing needs as modest as your bottom line? If so, you shouldn’t have trouble finding a decent budget desktop that fits your budget and doesn’t break your bank. The Lenovo S510 10KY002BUS SFF Desktop is one such PC that earned its stripes as the ‘mid-range desktop’ title. It’s capable of web browsing, video streaming, and home & office related tasks. It has nothing much to brag about along design or hardware, but don’t be fooled, it has enough muscle to wade its way through everyday productivity. Read the review below.
- Small form factor design
- Lightweight and portable frame
- Intel Core i5-6400 processor
- integrated Intel HD 530 graphics
- Lacks SSD storage
- Lacks HDMI and DVI connectors
The Lenovo S510 10KY002BUS SFF Desktop makes it into the category of compact small factor desktops built for portability while handling routine office and home tasks simultaneously. It doesn’t have an enamoring design but the hardware compensates on that with power enough to handle routine home and office related tasks. However, we recommend the Acer Aspire ATC-780-AMZi5 desktop as the Editor’s choice for best budget desktop.

DESIGN AND FEATURES
The Lenovo S510 design is a basic no frills one; nothing to big nor too small to warrant complaining about. It sports an all black chassis made of carbon just as the Lenovo ThinkPad laptop iteration we’ve reviewed in the past. The design is sleek but generally small factored and it should appeal mostly to business people and home office users. Lenovo included an optional Lenovo Dust Shield which you can order and reusable filters to particularly prevent dust. The filter is great as it is easy to remove and wash after dust accumulates.
There are a good number of ports to help with connectivity. At the front side there are two USB 3.0 ports, DVD/CD-RW and a microphone and headphone jack. The rear side holds two USB 3.0 ports, two USB 2.0 port, a myriad of audio ports, VGA, DisplayPort and Ethernet connectors.
To power this mid-range workhorse, Lenovo assembled it using a Quad-core 2.7 GHz Intel Core i5-6400 processor coupled with 500GB mechanical hard drive storage. The processor is not famous for speed but it packs enough power to run general office tasks like running MS Office (not installed), web browsing, emailing and some common applications. The 500GB storage will do plenty of data, video and image storage.
The Lenovo 10KY002BUS S510 SFF desktop comes with a 4GB SDRAM memory which makes it a quick performer for daily home and office tasks like video conferencing and web browsing. The Lenovo Ideacentre 300 desktop offers a better equipped 8GB RAM though, meaning it would be easier to multitask. Other desktops with better memory options include the Lenovo ThinkCentre S510 SFF and the Acer Aspire TC-780-AMZKi5 desktop.
Still, your fate isn’t sealed because you can upgrade up to as far as 32 GB (which would be overkill). There are two low profile PCI Express x16 slots to get you there; one slot already accommodating the 4GB. Memory aside, the Lenovo S510 is powered by a 180-watts power supply unit (PSU).This is okay enough for this unit’s low powered office and home use but a little low compared to what the competition offers. For instance, the Lenovo Ideacentre 300 desktop offers 300-watts while the Acer Aspire TC-780-AMZKi5. But it goes head-to-head with the Lenovo Thinkcentre E73 10AU00EUUS Desktop we reviewed recently.
The power supply unit might be enough to run the current graphics card but it limits any intentions to upgrade to a stronger GPU. This graphics card on the other hand houses a VGA and DisplayPort to cover connections to external monitors. For most people, connections to their HDTV or other types of monitors requires a HDMI. It’s therefore prudent to get a DisplayPort to DVI or Displayport to HDMI adapter/cable to sort that connection problem. The maximum resolution on the DisplayPort is 4096×2304 @60Hz on and 1920×1200 @60Hz on the VGA connector.

The Lenovo S510 10KY002BUS SFF Desktop is an impressive desktop with no much frills and a clean Windows 10 Pro installation. The quad-core Core i5-6400 processor isn’t the best around but it affords you enough oomph to handle routine home and office work. 4GB isn’t plenty of memory but is sufficient for constantly used office apps, software and tasks. The advantage is that it can be easily upgraded up to a max of 16 GB and 32GB, but in my opinion both would be overkill. As far as storage goes, 500GB is also pretty ample for saving data, pictures, video or movies.
Bottom line, the Lenovo S510 10KY002BUS SFF Desktop is an all-rounder business desktop. It makes all the right ticks and makes a bodacious statement among competition in its wake save for the Acer Aspire TC-780-AMZi5 desktop, our Editor’s choice for budget desktops. The Aspire TC-780 has plenty of storage (2TB HDD), double the RAM size (8GB SDRAM) and a more potent Core i5-processor. You would have to pay a little extra but it would totally be worth it. Even so, that doesn’t discredit our reviewed unit completely because it has a smaller foot print and weighs much less. It makes a great office workhorse companion worth recommending.
