Audio And Video
We loved the iBuyPower i7-8700K Gaming Desktop right off the bat. First, for its headline-grabbing specs, then for its ultra-sleek form factor. Just like other OEMs with budget setups, like CyberPowePC and SkyTech, the iBuyPower is a household name. As much as readers are interested in reading and getting up to speed with premium PCs, ultimately the frequently purchase affordable budget alternatives like iBuyPower. As a result, these said companies become famous. In essence, it these consumer purchase trends that have made the iBuyPower brand an instant legend. So, until they habits change in 2018, iBuyPower will continue being a likable favorite. But I digress.
The build quality of the iBuyPower i7-8700K Gaming Desktop is exceptional. Built on an iBuyPower Slate 2X Slide tempered glass Gaming LED Gaming Case, the iBuyPower i7-8700K is a finely tuned rig. The front face features a black aluminum chassis with a red strip cutting diagonally through it and iBuyPower logo at the bottom.
This Mid-Tower case measures 25 x 12.5 x 21.38 inches which spacious enough to support various types of motherboards including ATX, Micro-ATX, and Mini-ITX. That means should you need to upgrade, the case has extra clearance space to cover you. At these dimensions, the iBuyPower i7-8700K compares closely to its twin favorite iBuyPower 9200 Gaming Desktop. However, in a waistline competition, it loses big time to the HP Pavilion Power 580-023w (19.29 x 9.23 x 16.3 inches).
Moving on, the right side panel offers competitive flashy value with its see-through tempered glass panel. Additionally, the panel doubles up as a doorway to the interior section. From outside, the glowing colors of the 16 Color sRGB-lit interior sparkle and the well-done cabling reveals a neatly built rig. According to iBuyPower, the LED lighting can be controlled remotely using a remote, to make them change color or pulsate while gaming.
The smoothly finished front face also reveals a lack of Optical drive. You will have to download software online or games through websites like Steam and Origin. That shouldn’t present a problem if you know your way around the internet.
If you’re spending extra on your gaming PC, you deserve to get a few extras on your PC in return. The port system is where iBuyPower dropped the ball. While the port system is excellent, they failed for not including a USB Type-C port. For a state-of-the-art gaming like the iBuyPower i7-8700K Gaming Desktop, a USB Type-C should have been a no-brainer. Let’s hope they’ll correct this in future iterations.
Nonetheless, there are four USB 3.0 ports, two USB 2.0 ports, a single RJ-45 port and a 7.1 audio channel. Moreover, the graphics card brings a few extras:
- DVI port
- Single HDMI port
Other additional extras include 802.11a/c Wi-Fi Adapter.
From a specification standpoint, the iBuyPower i7-8700K Gaming Desktop has all the bells and whistles to be labeled a gaming demi-god. But do all these components convert to produce all the incredible computing power they seem to suggest? Well, going by the specs list alone, it would be safe to assume so. To this point, I would correctly say the iBuyPower i7-8700K will definitely push frame rates above 60 fps on 1080p highest settings with smooth motion and cinematic experience. And that applies to most AAA gaming titles. We attribute this to great components:
Fast Intel Hexa-Core Processor
As configured, our reviewed unit came with the six-core Intel Core i7-8700K processor. The Core-7-8700K processor is a leading processor among the new generation of Coffee Lake-S desktop processors. If you’re looking for speed, the Core i7-8700K is everything you’ve been looking for. At the base level, it offers 3.7 GHz which is pretty sweet and gnarly. And that’s not the silver-lining yet. On Turbo, it hits 4.7GHz; an overclocking champ in the making.
All these contribute to make this 12 threaded processor a stellar gaming companion and perfect for hyperthreading performance. Compared to the competition, it outpaces AMD’s Ryzen 7 processor so much so that it leaves a good margin between them. To get a good feel for its performance, we put it through some tests to pace it. On the Average CPU Mark, it managed to score the highest Average CPU Mark 16,029 yet. A former predecessor, the Core i7-4790K manages only 11,187 on the same test.
The scores mean you can play through intense AAA titles and the processor will handle it comfortably. For instance, Civilization VI, which normally gobbles down as much CPU power as you can feed it played smoothly with this processor. Additionally, the processor is great general productivity processor. It should offer better performance for media creation, video editing and encoding and photo editing when you’re not gaming. You should be able to multitask while handling these tasks too.
Plenty of Storage
Moving on, the iBuyPower i7-8700K processor works together with a 16GB DDR4 memory, 1TB mechanical hard drive, and 240GB solid-state drive. Well, considering the memory numbers, the 16GB might not be enough to make you weak at the knees. But it has the potential to offer better frame rates while gaming and multitasking.
For storage, for most people, and data hogs, the 1TB hard drive space is enough especially for saving movies, photo galleries and video games. If not, there’s the 240GB SSD that trounces over most gaming PCs with mechanical drives. The SSD helps boot the system from off to running in less than 20 seconds which is a boon to speed geeks. If these don’t make you want to rip your intestines out in joy, there’s still some extra bays for upgrades!
Strong Gaming Performance
With a high-powered Nvidia GTX 1070 Ti (8GB DDR5 VRAM) card, the iBuyPower i7-8700K Gaming Desktop brings out the beast on 3D and AAA games. The card gets remarkable frame rates with debatable tight-rope performance with the reigning champ Nvidia GTX 1080 card.
The Nvidia GTX 1070 Yi is the latest GPU from the green team’s Pascal line-based graphics cards. It brings to be table a single 8-pin power connector, 3 DisplayPorts, a single HDMI port and one DVI port. All these offer great connectivity should you need to connect to an external monitor.
On gaming action, the Nvidia GTX 1070 Ti performs better than the previous Nvidia GTX 1070. Right out of the box, its performance sits between its well-established sibling 1070 and 1080 cards. To be a bit more precise, on the Nvidia hierarchy, it seems like a modest improvement on the Nvidia 1070 or toned down version of the Nvidia GTX 1080.
The card (Nvidia GTX 1070 Ti) handles games quite remarkably thanks to its overclocking chops. 1080p and 1440p games play impressively well on the card with a more superior quality emphasized on the 1080p. On our Doom gaming run, it held down frame rates as high as 100 fps on 1080p and 90 fps on 1440p. Upping the game to 4K (3160 x 2160), the performance tanked just a bit, but overwhelmingly maintained a smoothness gameplay at highs of 60fps. Most noticeable was that there wasn’t much distortion between scenes of quiet and scenes of shootouts on the game.
Other Gaming Benchmarks
|Middle Earth: Shadow of War||75 fps||50 fps||40 fps|
|Total War: Hammer II||60 fps||45 fps||20-25 fps|
|Wolfstein II: The New Colossus||110 fps||75-80 fps||45 fps|
|Rise of the Tomb Raider||60 fps||60 fps||40 fps|
Keyboard and Mouse
As debatable as it is, your keyboard and mouse are the most important weapons when it comes to PC gaming. Your keyboard doubles up as your weapon and controller. So, if you’re planning on fragging your enemies in combat, it’s one factor you cannot take lightly. The iBuyPower i7-8700K Gaming Desktop keyboard is attractive with its red and black color scheme. It’s great for gaming but a bit stiff for intense gaming. We recommend switching it for a more tricked out gaming keyboard. Gaming keyboards and offer more including backlighting, exceptionally well made individual keys with macro keys with programmable keys. You want that in your corner for gaming.
On the other hand, the mouse is also great but not decked out for ideal intense gaming. You could also replace them further down for a more contoured mouse with better ergonomics. design and precision.
Clear Leader in PC Gaming
Sure, the iBuyPower costs a fair amount but if buyer purchasing habits are anything to go by, then the iBuyPower i7-8700K Gaming Desktop falls under a welcome budget bracket. It offers plenty of high-end components bound to bring home a rich gaming experience. Also, you get a likable design to go with it. Of course, if the iBuyPower i7-8700K doesn’t make your tongue wet, or you just have some extra dime to spend (about $400), you can opt for the CyberPowerPC Gamer Xtreme GXiVR8080A2 which spots a Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 Ti GPU, Core i7-8700K processor and host of other components for robust gaming power.
