DESIGN AND FEATURES
The looks of the HP Pavilion 15.6 Flagship Laptop (HP Pavilion 15-ab292nr) are nothing above the ordinary. It comes with a silver exterior made of plastic, and with the Hp Log at the Center of the lid. Its corners are rounded common with the Pavilion theme. It’s interior has a black finish that breaks away from the satiny silver color. The body has a fairly sturdy feel to it. The display cover flexes negligibly when you apply pressure at its top. Its general build quality is high and feels nothing like cheap plastic.
The hinges are strong and thus no not allow for much screen play. They are nothing our of the ordinary that we’re used to seeing in the Pavilion line of machines.
The HP Pavilion 15.6 Flagship Laptop weight in at 2.38 kg (5.25lbs), and has a height of 2.5 cm(0.99 In) at it’s thickest point, which falls within the par of most desktop replacements.
The HP Pavilion 15.6 Flagship Laptop made a fair selection of ports. It comes with two USB 3.0 Ports, one USB 2.0, a HDMI port, a Multimedia card reader port, and a headphone/microphone combo port. The USB 2.0 can only have a transfer speed of 480Mbps while the USB 3.0 has a transfer speed of 5Gbps.
With two USB 3.0 ports, the port selection is quite decent. However, it would have been nice to have at least one USB 3.1 and at least one Thunderbolt 2/3 port. The Thunderbolt 2 port would offer speeds of up to 20Gbps and provide enough power for a 4k display screen. Such however isn’t that common currently apart from in top of the range Ultraportables which of course come with a heftier price tag. Some good examples would be the Dell XPS 13 9343, Hp Spectre x360, Hp Spectre 2016 and the Acer Swift 7.
The HDMI 1.4 (High Definition Multimedia Interface) port has its peaks. Other than serving it’s intended purpose, it also is Miracast enabled. This means that you can mirror your laptop’s screen to another display such as a TV over Wi-Fi. This, of course, is a great plus above and beyond what ordinary HDMI ports can do. It can work with any Miracast enabled display or if you connect to a Miracast dongle. You may, however, get full resolution (>1080p) if your Miracast Dongle does not support it. You may opt to just using a cable in such an event.
The Card reader adds to the versatility of the HP Pavilion 15.6 Flagship Laptop, in that one can easily transfer media from a camera and/or also us the port to increasestorage capacity of the machine.
The HP Pavilion 15.6 Flagship Laptop comes with an 802.11AC Wi-Fi connectivity, whose performance isn’t to the greater part satisfactory. It’s powerful to play Streamed games without as much as a stutter. However, in some instances, reception wades off… This, however, does not cut across the board.
Further, according to some users, it at times disconnects itself from the WiFi router when switched off. This also is not common across the board, and may only be a fault in only a few machines. It is, however, important to take that into consideration. In my opinion, this is not a deal breaker considering its pros.
The keyboard is quite comfortable to use as in common in the Pavilion line of computers. It has a comfortable vertical travel of 14 mm, making it quite enjoyable to work with. The chicklet keys are sufficiently damped and do not require much force to press in.
In addition to the QUARTY keypad, the HP Pavilion 15.6 Flagship Laptop comes has an additional numeric keypad. This makes it easier to type in numbers faster and is an added advantage especially to people whose work involves lots of numbers, such as in the case of auditing.
The downside is that it has no backlight. It would have been great to have such a feature, but I guess there are some tradeoffs that you have to accept as a compromise for the fair price.
If you are a lover of large trackpads, you most definitely will love the HP Pavilion Flagship Laptop’s trackpad. It features a 110 x 65 mm size trackpad, a majestic size by all standards. It is slightly displaced to the left, a slight detour from convention, but a move that’s slowly gaining prominence in laptop design. The trackpad is sensitive and works quite well. It supports multi-gesture finger movements, making its use an experience.
The HP Pavilion 15.6 Flagship Laptop features a 720P True Vision HD Webcam centrally placed at the upper bezel. Picture quality is quite fine with this camera and that along with good audio.
And yes, the HP Pavilion 15.6 Flagship Laptop does come with an Optical drive which can read and write DVDs and CDs.
The 15.6 inch Full HD IPS display is one of the great features that the HP Pavilion comes with. The 1080 x 1920 pixels provide for excellent display quality while the IPS display facilitates for wide viewing angles.
Not only is it great to view, but is also Touch sensitive. This means that better control and usability for you. In addition to that, it supports the use of a stylus pen. It further supports up to 10 multi-touch gestures.
The HP Pavilion 15.6 Flagship Laptop works out does not compromise on performance either. It comes with an 8 GB SDRAM DDR3, a 6th Generation Intel Core i7-6700HQ, a 1 TB Serial ATA HDD (Hard disk drive) and an Integrated Intel HD Graphics 530 chip.
With 8GB of RAM, an Intel Graphics 530 chip and Intel Core i7 processor, you can get a lot done. It not only can hand heavy applications effortlessly, but it can also handle games quite well. When it comes to games, however, it may not be the most ideal for heavy games but can handle most games at medium to low settings.
The 1 TB Hard Disk Drive is not at all a hindrance to the user experience. I initially thought that boot up would be agonizingly slow but I was surprised at how fast it actually starts up. The large storage is, of course, a plus to everyone, but even beyond that, there is provided a slot for additional Storage. You can also exchange the HDD drive with an SSD (Solid State Drive) if you need a faster boot up speeds and shorter fetch time. However, this is not necessary for most users – and is also quite costly.
The HP Pavilion 15.6 Flagship Laptop also offers the user an opportunity to upgrade the RAM up to 16 GB. Well, you better be good at the hardware to get this done on your own, however. You might need this done for you to avoid getting your warranty declared void.
It, however, is not DDR4 compatible. Despite the fact that Intel’s 6th gen Skylake processors can accept both DDR3L and DDR4 memory, it only takes whatever the motherboard is designed for, and in this case, this laptop’s motherboard uses a DDR3 pin connector.
The DDR4 is an advancement of the DDR3 but uses slightly different operational principle. The DDR4 provides operates at a lower voltage and thus lower power consumption. However, the difference is quite negligible in most quarters, with even DDR3 being nanoseconds faster than DDR4.
Sporting a 6th Generation Quad-core Intel Core i7-6700HQ, its processing power is quite good. Having four processors gives it better multitasking ability, but does not necessarily increase its speed, that is when compared to a dual-core processor.
Another highlight is that while it operates at a clock speed of 2.6 GHz, it can automatically turbo up to 3.50 GHz to meet demand, and throttle down once the need is met. With such a processor, you can open multiple tabs and yet run seamlessly… even to an excess of 15 Google tabs and with some other applications running in the background. All this without hanging or slowing down.
The downside is that it’s nonupgradeable. It makes use of BGA (Ball Grid Array) fittings which are more or less permanent, and every Intel 5th gen and 6th gen mobile processors are BGA now. Of course, there are tutorials online on how to remove them, but you probably are going to destroy your first one in the process anyhow. It’s just better making peace with yourself that you won’t be able to change it.
The HP Pavilion 15.6 Flagship Laptop comes with Bang & Olufsen speakers. Their sound is quite nice, with little distortion. They are sufficiently loud and for most peoples taste, do not disappoint.
The HP Pavilion 15.6 Flagship Laptop is powered by a 4-cell lithium-ion and is claimed to have a run time of up to 7.5 Hours by its manufacturer. However, in practical use, the battery tends to last for 4-5 hours, or lower depending on use.
On the bright side, it doesn’t come with bloatware. If you’ve ever bought a bloated laptop before, you know how hard it is to uninstall them. However, this might not be true if you make your purchase at a Windows store.
The HP Pavilion 15.6 Flagship Laptop is by all standards a good machine to consider. It combines a great set of specs at a good price. Bearing 8 GB of RAM, 1 TB of internal storage, a core i7 processor and Integrated Intel HD Graphics 530, performance is expected. However, its keys lack a backlight and it would do with a stronger battery. Notwithstanding, it stands to be counted in the upper half of the list of desktop replacement category, a worthy competitor among strong peers.
