HP 870-090 Omen Gaming Desktop Review

% Very Good

The HP 870-090 Omen Gaming desktop adds to the copious list of gaming desktops, but before you dismiss it as a run-off-the mill machine, have a closer look. So what exactly makes this unit special. Well, without mincing words or going round in circles, the graphics card is the main show here – as is always the case with gaming desktops. It comes with a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Graphics card with 8 GB of GDDR5X memory, guaranteed to handle up to 4K displays. And to add to that, it comes with a powerful Intel Core i7-6700K processor with a base clock speed of 4.0 GHz along with 4 cores and hyper-threading features.

It gets better knowing that you get a mouse and keyboard along with the package, all at a good bargain. All that at a very reasonable cost. We must say, we’re really impressed. Read the HP Omen 870 Review to find out more.

DESIGN AND FEATURES

The HP 870-090 Omen gaming desktop | Amazon build quality is nothing short of impeccable. The front face is polished silver metal with narrow strips of LED-lit lines striking through from the top to bottom. A section of this strip is home to the DVD drive which slides out vertically. Apart from the drive, there is nothing else including ports gracing the front section. It’s a rather new and stylish appeal. Its simplicity whispers eloquence and austerity.

2018 Update: HP just introduced the new 2018 HP Pavilion Power 580-130 with better band for buck.

The design features a top mounted output which personally I prefer to a front facing one. It helps reduce dangling cables and secondly hides outputs, yet keeps them convienent to use. Also, a big shout out to HP for adding a well crafted ridge at the top to serve as an area to place your external drives or phones. Great job!

The desktop is not very portable as one may assume. The whole rig weighs in at 23 pounds and measures 16.5 x 15.8 x 6.5 inches, somewhat similar to its sister the HP Omen 870-251 desktop. The CYBERPOWERPC Gamer Xtreme VR GXiVR8020A3 Desktop Gaming PC is heavier at 32 pounds and measuring 9.25 x 20.16 x 21.57 inches.

PORTS

The HP Omen 870-090 features a healthy set of ports to go around. On the bright side, this should not be such a glaring downside is you’re only planning to use this desktop for a few years. Also, the Nvidia 1080 graphics unit provides a few ports that are great for connections to external monitors and HDTV.

Moving on, just like the HP OMEN 870-251 Desktop | Amazon we reviewed, the front, or rather the top has two USB 2.0 ports, two USB 3.0 ports including one that supports super speed charging. A microphone/headphone jack combo and 7-in-1 media card reader are also located here. The formats supported are mentioned in the specs sheet above. https://mogz.tech/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/HP-Omen-Desktop-870-review-2.jpg

The rear houses two USB 3.0 ports, four USB 2.0 ports and an Ethernet connector jack. For external video connections, you get two HDMI ports and three Display ports. The presence of a display port avails to you as the user, which include: 4K @ 60 Hz, multiple Video streams and stereoscopic 3D among others. In general, the port selection is quite sufficient

That aside, the Omen also features other connectivity options such as Bluetooth 4.1, DTS Studio Sound drivers, and a DVD-Writer right at the front. It however does not come with internal speakers.

HP offers the desktop with a complimentary wired mouse and keyboard. They both are quite decent and should work just fine, not unless you’re into premium gaming keyboard and mouse. For now, the SteelSeries Apex 350 and SteelSeries Rival 300 mouse are a simple and reliable choice you can work with.

PERFORMANCE

First of all, this system is adorned with the all powerful Intel Core i7-6700K. It’s not entirely a beast in rendering but it comes second to the Intel Core i7-7700K, a spruced version of its own. Still, this little puppy brings in the muscle, agility and potent it takes to crunch through general tasks and gaming. With the glacial progress at Intel still going on hard as ever, I wouldn’t say there’s much performance difference between this processor and the Core i7-7700K. Of course the latter takes the cake and is always preferred, but our processor doesn’t fall back that far behind in similar tasks.

With the Core i7-7700K you get a base clock speed of 4.2 GHz going all the way to 4.5 GHz in turbo mode. The Core i7-6700K on the other hand offers a base frequency of 4.0 GHz and maxes out at 4.2GHz. The clock speed is the main difference between these two processors. Other than that, all other features remain the same. They both have 4 Cores, 8 Threads, 91 TDP, support 4K resolution @ 60 Hz, Support Intel Virtualization, have 8 GB of Cache memory, among others. Bottom line, the Core i7-6700K is a close second to the i7-7700K, and among the best processors you can get. To make things even better, the processor is liquid cooled, which means that you can overclock without having to worry about heating issues.

Anyway, this desktop comes with a stock cooler to allow overclocking and keep the temperatures low and managable.

If you’re a photo or video editor or work with programs that require heavy number crunching, this machine will definitely meet your needs. That we give credit to the multiple cores (4) as well as hyper-threading (8) features that the processor comes with. Not so many games benefit from the multiple cores or hyper-threading, so do some research on what games you want to play and whether they are optimized to work with multiple cores and threads. One thing I have to mention also is that the processor comes with 8 GB of L3 Cache memory, which is as good as you can get, and you definitely want this.

The HP Omen 870-090 shares similar processor with some of the leading gaming desktops in the field. For instance, Lenovo IdeaCentre Y710 Cube | Amazon.https://mogz.tech/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/HP-Omen-Desktop-870-review.jpg

The HP Omen 870-090’s key attraction without doubt is the dedicated NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 graphics card. It comes with 8GB of GDDR5X memory, which is perfect for handling up to 4K resolution display. This chip selling individually would go for around $549, which is close to half the cost of the HP Omen 870-090 minus the display. I personally think this is where the deal lies. The Hp Omen 870-090 comfortably handles any game at 1090p resolution and can handles other games at lower settings quite decently. Games such as BF4, Arma 3 and world of Warships play between 60 – 80 fps at max settings and 1080p resolution. The HP Omen 870-090 is also VR ready. IT can handle both HTC Vive and Occulus Rift

Thanks to this graphics card, photo and video editors along with gamers will find the HP Omen 870-090 a perfect match. Even intensive video editing software such as Camtasia, Power Point, Adobe elements 15 and Adobe Premier Pro will run comfortably on this machine. However for better results, peaking the RAM to 32 GB will achieve better results with Adobe Premier Pro.

Additionally, the 2048GB SATA (7200 RPM) hard disk drive (it’s a Seagate HDD) and 256 GB Solid state drive ensures that the HP Omen 870 has sufficient space for virtually anything you may want to throw in there. The SSD offers sufficient space to load all your games for snappy game play as well as faster boot time (4 seconds). The HP Omen 870-130 Desktop PC also provides similar storage space among other features; Core i7-6700, 8GB RAM, 1TB HHD and 256GB SSD.

NB: You can load up your Windows Operating System on the SSD for fast boot time speeds.

Update: For purposes of clarification of this review, we decided to add details of the motherboard that we had previuosly not included in the review. This HP Omen desktop sports a micro ATX (uATX) 24.0×24.0 cm (9.4×9.4 in) by Thimpu. The motherboard works alongside a Z170 Chipset and a LGA1151 processor socket. Additionally, the motherboard supports a few expansion slots:

  • 1 PCI Express x16 (Gen3.0)
  • 1 PCI Express x1 (Gen3.0)
  • One M.2 socket 1, key A
  • One M.2 socket 3, key M

There are four DIMM slots on the motherboard should you need to get more memory.

CONFIGURATIONS

There HP Omen comes in plenty of configurations. These include:

HP OMEN Desktop 870-130 DesktopAMD Radeon RX 480 4GB GDDR5
HP 870-080 OMEN Gaming DesktopNVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 8GB GDDR5
HP Omen 870-251 Gaming DesktopCore i5-7400, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD + 1TB HDD
HP OMEN 870-141 Gaming DesktopCore (TM) i7-6700, 8GB RAM, 1TB HDD 256GB SSD
HP OMEN 870-110 DesktopCore i3-6100, 8GB RAM, 1TB HDD
HP OMEN 870-120 DesktopCore i5-6400, 8GB RAM, 1TB HDD

If you’re like me, you’re probably wondering what the difference is between the HP 870-080 with NVIDIA 1070 graphics card and the HP 870-090 which we’re currently reviewing with a NVIDIA 1080. The two run on the same GPU architecture, the Pascal GP 104 but the 1080 offers faster Memory speeds – 10 Gbps compared to 8 Gbps with the 1070. The 1080 has an actual boost clock of 1733 MHz while the 1070 follows closely behind at 1683 MHz. In short, the HP 870-090 with a NVIDIA 1080 card will offer slightly faster frame rates, although the quality will be more or less the same between the two. So if you can afford it, go with the HP 870-090.

CONCLUSION
