HP OMEN 870-251 Review

The HP OMEN 870-251 Desktop is a decent gaming PC for users with a thirst for gaming, yet constrained within a narrow budget. It comes with an assortment of features that are bound to catch the eye of any gamer. Read the HP OMEN 870-251 Review below.

  • Great artistic design
  • Excellent performance
  • Premium specs
  • Healthy port system

  • Lacks USB 3.1 Type-C port

  • HP Omen 870-251 | See at Amazon is a high achiever among its desktop counterparts. It brags of great aesthetics and performance – a lethal combination bound to peak the interests of every avid gamer. From a distance, the front panel will give you a rush with its bright and illuminating RGB display of colors. Equally impressive are the features under the hood – a 7th generation Intel Core i5-7400 processor, 8GB DDR RAM, 1TB HDD storage and AMD Radeon RX 480 graphics card (with 4GB GDDR5). So is it worth buying? Well, it’s not our Editor’s Choice but makes a solid statement nonetheless, hence receiving our recommended. However, if you’re open to suggestions, we have a couple of other options which you might need to know before checking out. Read on – HP OMEN 870-251 Review.

With simplicity and a slight touch of sophistry, the HP Omen 870-251| Amazon is certainly eye-catching. This PC is just about the size of a regular desktop, but its striking RGB-lit front facing dash makes it hard to miss. It’s a simple yet clever engineering fete; adding a pinch of gamer-centric appeal at the front face and finishing it off with RGB controlled lights. For lighting fans, it should be a bright fun affair at your gaming cave. We loved the fact that HP decided not to include any ports at the front as that would have ruined the boxed and polished look.

However, we’ve seen a few other desktops manage to pull that off and still manage to maintain the glamour (I’m looking at you MSI VR Ready Aegis-050US Powerhouse Gaming Desktop | See at Amazon). So, what we’re really advocating for is for the status quo to remain the same especially when changes are made.

The HP Omen pulls a bold look with ts dark grey chassis

As for size, the HP Omen 870-251 measures 10.9 x 19.3 x 20.6 inches and weighs 23.6 pounds. From that alone, you can tell it’s not a lightweight carry-around desktop like the mini-desktops we’ve reviewed in the past. In comparison, the CYBERPOWERPC Gamer Xtreme VR GXiVR8020A3 Desktop Gaming PC measures 9.25 x 20.16 x 21.57 inches (32 lbs) making it inched smaller than HP Omen, while the CYBERPOWERPC Gamer Ultra GUA4500A measures 7.3 x 20.5 x 17.5 inches.

Speaking of ports, the HP Omen 870 has a healthy port system as per market standards. The front, or rather the top has two USB 2.0 ports, two USB 3.0 ports including one that supports super speed charging. Right next to those is the microphone/headphone jack combo and finally a 7-in-1 media card reader. The rear is home to two USB 3.0 ports, four USB 2.0 ports, and an Ethernet connector jack. However, the one downside that we noted is that it lacks a USB 3.1 Type-C port which is a future-proof port.

I guess you’ll have to do without that for this desktop. You get 3 DisplayPorts and a single HDMI connector for your monitor connections. That aside, the Omen also features Bluetooth 4.2, DTS Studio Sound, and a DVD-Writer right at the front.

HP offers the desktop with a wired mouse and keyboard. They are pretty standard and should work just fine not unless you need a dedicated gaming mouse and keyboard. For now, the SteelSeries Apex 350 keyboard and SteelSeries Rival 300 mouse make a great gaming combo.

The Power you need for Daily Tasks and Gaming.

A 7th Gen 3.0 Intel Core i5-7400 quad-core processor drives the HP Omen. It comes with 6M Cache, 3.5 GHz Turbo speed and 7443 Average CPU Mark. That’s pretty much the same processor with the CYBERPOWERPC Gamer Xtreme VR GXiVR8020A3 Desktop Gaming PC we reviewed recently. Both of these desktops have the chops to handle gaming thanks to strong processors.

Additionally, the hood contains 8GB RAM which is the standard for multitasking in a small office and home use. You could tweak that to 16GB for reliable gaming so that the rig can handle some AAA titles with flair. The CYBERPOWERPC Gamer Xtreme VR GXiVR8020A3 Desktop Gaming PC also comes with only 8GB memory capacity while the CYBERPOWERPC Gamer Ultra GUA4500A stays ahead with 16GB capacity making it a prime choice for multitasking and gaming. As for storage, there’s the understated 1TB hard drive to cover your space issues; meaning all your movies, image gallery, data, and software will have plenty of space. The last two mentioned desktops are in the same table with similar storage capacity.

If you’re into gaming, particularly VR, the AMD Radeon RX 480 graphics card represents a huge shift in the gaming world. This GPU is among the cheapest graphics units to ever reach recommended specifications for Oculus Rift and HTC Vive. The much anticipated Polaris architecture AMD Radeon 480 brings to the table impressive Full HD and 1440p performance especially when gaming. It comes with 4GB DDR5 memory which handles just fine, but I would have preferred if HP included an 8GB configuration to the list of options.https://mogz.tech/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/HP-Omen-870-251-desktop-review.jpg

Speaking of gaming, the HP Omen showed its strength mainly while playing games. It handles 1080p titles like a charm and that’s bound to please gamers across the board. On our gaming tests, it gobbled up almost everything we threw at it; from 2K to 1080p, but some demanding games resulted into some slight lag and as a result dipping below 60 fps. Here’s a list of other desktops with the same processor: StormForce Tornado Gaming Desktop PC, HP Omen 870-240na Desktop and the StormForce Infinity Gaming Desktop PC.

All these features sit on a MicroATX motherboard and configured to work with Windows 10 Home Operating system. If you’re looking for larger storage space or faster solid state space, HP Omen 870-130 Desktop PC is a better configuration offering Core i7-6700, 8GB RAM, 1TB HHD, and 256GB SSD. To handle more multitasking jobs with ease, the HP 870-080 OMEN Gaming Desktop is the choice offering 16GB of memory (also features a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 8GB GDDR5) at an almost similar price tag.

While writing this review, we came across a bunch of other HP Omen 870 desktops that we thought worth mentioning. Here’s a list of some that you should consider buying:

  • Processor Intel Core i5-7400 3.00 GHz, 6MB cache, quad-core
  • Storage 256GB SSD + 1TB 7200 RPM HDD
  • Graphics card AMD Radeon RX 480 graphics card with 4GB GDDR5
  • Model number Z5M28AA#ABA
  • Operating System Windows 10
  • Weight 23.6 pounds
  • Dimensions 20.6 x 19.3 x 10.9 inches
  • Processor Brand Intel

Aside from a remarkable blend of performance and gamer aesthetics, the HP Omen 870-251 desktop See at Amazon makes a broad statement as an entry level gaming level pacemaker. It’s a great looking desktop with an attractive case embedded with RGB strips; that’s hard to stare away from. It shares the stage with some other brands like the CYBERPOWERPC Gamer Xtreme VR GXiVR8020A3 Desktop Gaming PC and the CYBERPOWERPC Gamer Ultra GUA4500A but falls a little short of the latter because the CYBERPOWERPC features double (16GB) memory.

Bottom line, the HP Omen 870-251 Desktop makes a good case for itself and while we think the HP 870-080 OMEN Gaming Desktop (NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 8GB GDDR5) is a more appealing option, for the price it is a great steal. On the other hand, the CYBERPOWERPC Gamer Ultra GUA4500A offers 16GB of RAM which has double our unit’s memory hence better value for money. But that’s only for those who don’t mind smaller brand names – HP OMEN 870-251 Review.
