DESIGN AND FEATURES

Affordable does not necessarily mean cheap. Such is true with the HP 15-ay191ms. It’s made of tough corrugated black plastic that feels nice to the touch while still remaining sturdy enough to resist flex. The bottom is made of the common textured plastic to assist in grip while carrying the laptop around.

It measures 14.4 x 17.42 x 1.73 inches and weighs 4.6 pounds – perfectly within the range expected for desktop replacement laptops. As a matter of fact, its lighter than most desktop replacement laptops of a similar calibre, with many such falling between 4.7 and 5.5 lbs. Interestingly, this is in spite of having a DVD reader/writer.

Display

On the other hand, a roomy 15.6-inch HD touchscreen provides a large canvas for work, play and entertainment with OK clarity. Well, a 1366 x 768 pixel resolution isn’t the best for a 15 incher, but to be plain honest – it quite sufficient to meet most users needs. However, users whose work requires excellent color accuracy and depth, then a Full HD display or higher may be a better choice.

Another feature that’s worth mentioning is the 10 point touch sensitive display. I guess we could say this is the great equalizer. Most budget laptops do not come with a touchscreen display, hell, even some premium ones lack it. This single feature gives the HP 15-ay191ms signature edition a clear edge over similarly priced machines, and we love it. Best of all, the touch screen works great  – supplementing the touchpad that at times feels inadequate.

Input devices

While not backlit, the full sized keyboard impressed with its soft ergonomic keys, comfortable key travel and the included numbers pad. The result is a responsive keyboard that’s  quite comfortable to work on. The touchpad on the other hand was a little dissapointing. It was not as responsive as we would have liked, thought it did work fairly well. Having had a taste of Macbooks and their perfect responsiveness, it’s little hard to be objective in this review. However, thanks to the touchscreen, and also that its possible to use an external mouse, this needs not be a deal breaker. See Best mice under $20

CONNECTIVITY

The HP 15-ay191ms signature edition doesn’t disappoint in port selecion. It comes with most of what one expects to see in a desktop replacement laptop. These include one USB 3.0 port, two USB 2.0 ports, a HDMI port, an SD card reader, an audio jack and an RJ-45 port. It would have been nice to have at least one USB 3.1 port for better transfer speeds… but it seems this was one of the trade-offs to keep prices low. Other connectivity options include a 802.11bgn Wi-Fi  and Bluetooth 4.0.

PERFORMANCE

The HP Flagship 15-ay191ms comes with a 7th Generation Intel Core i3- 7100U processor with a fixed clock speed of 2.4 GHz. It is a dual core processor and integrates hyperthreading to allow is to work with more that 4 threads at once. It inegrates the Intel HD Graphics 620 graphics, with 24 executable units and a combined TDP of 15 Watts. This coupled with 8GB of RAM make a powerful system sufficient for multitasking and general productivity tasks. It however is not suited for gaming, barely reaching the minimum requirements for games like Grand Theft Auto and FIFA 18. It further comes with a 5400 rpm Hard disk drive of 1TB capacity – excellent for storing mass media files.

Sound quality is good thanks to the bottom facing speakers tuned by DTS Studio Sound. They deliver considerably audible bass levels with clear peaks and crests sufficient to meet your media needs on the go. We’re not saying they are perfect, but decent. The battery did not impress us much, lasting 3 hrs 15 minutes an hour short of it predecessor.

CONCLUSION

Siting a 7th Generation Intel Core i3- 7100U processor, a 10 point multi-touch screen, sufficiently large memory and internal storage, the HP 15-ay191ms makes an excellent option for anyone looking for a med-performance laptop for a steal. But knowing in a bid to make your selection easier, consider the following options.

For around $150 less, one can get the the Acer Aspire E 15 E5-575-33B which comes with a 15.6″ Full HD display (non-touch), a similar processor, 4 GB of RAM (down from 8GB in our review machine), a backlit keyboard and weighs 5.27 lbs ( 0.6 lbs more than the HP 15-ay191ms). The Acer As[ore E 15 is an equally powerful machine that’s worth your consideration. So if you fancy better display resolution over touch sensitivity, and would prefer a backlit keyboard, then the Acer Aspire E 15 E5-575-33B might be your best match.

However, if you’re a power user in search of portability, then the Dell XPS9560-7001SLV-PUS | Amazon might just well interest you. Gamers will find it quite impressive, but nowhere close to the Eluktronics N850HK1 Pro Premium Gaming Laptop | Amazon – HP 15-ay191ms Review.
