The HP Envy Phoenix 860-140 Desktop| Amazon is a stellar gaming machine with elegant design and performance. And that is as a result of high-end features such as the 4 GHz Intel Core i7 6700k processor, 16 GB SDRAM memory, 2TB hard drive & 128 GB solid state drive storage and Nvidia GeForce GTX 980 with the 12GB GDDR5 graphics card. All these specs make a lethal desktop gaming rig capable of handling most modern games, graphic intensives tasks, and multitasking. Apart from gaming, we recommend this rig for photo and video editing. It makes a bold performance statement and as a result, joins the ranks of our Editor’s Choice for gaming desktops.
The high achiever HP Envy Phoenix 860-140 Desktop | Amazon comes in a sturdy built chassis. The design is nothing different from its brother the HP Omen 870-251 desktop we reviewed recently. The case is big and boxy with plenty of promise for expansion for users on the look-out for space. It has an eye-catching RGB front facing dash with no ports to ruin its aesthetics; nothing but a carefully camouflaged DVD Writer. The customizable RGB strip at the front brings in the flair to the slightly dull brushed gunmetal silver chassis.
It’s a beautiful contrast and the polished silver HP logo at the bottom right of the panel compliments it all. The left side panel is where the vents to the system reside. Also, they double up as doorways to get to the hood of the tower.
Measuring 16.5 x 6.5 x 15.8 inches and 23.2 pounds in weight, the HP Envy 860 Desktop looks every bit as a humble giant. While it’s not the lightest desktop in its category, like the Lenovo IdeaCentre Y710 Cube desktop, the weight is within comfortable limits. Its still is easy to carry it from one room to another cutting the load you would have to bear moving it from your home office to under the living room table, perhaps even right beside your monitor. In comparison, the CYBERPOWERPC Gamer Xtreme VR GXiVR8020A3 Desktop Gaming PC | Amazon measures 20.16 x9.25 x 21.57 inches (32 lbs) while the CYBERPOWERPC Gamer Ultra GUA4500A | Amazon measures 7.3 x 20.5 x 17.5 inches.
Turning the HP Envy Phoenix 860-140 Desktop around reveals a number of peripherals. The front or rather the top has two USB 2.0 ports and two USB 3.0 ports including one that supports super speed charging. Right next to these ports is the microphone/headphone combo and a 7-in-1 card reader to finish the list. The rear is home to a healthy number of ports including two USB 3.0 ports, four USB 2.0 ports, and an Ethernet connector port.
It would have been splendid if HP included a USB Type-C port for future proofing and that would have given this desktop an edge over many others rigs in the coming years. Even so, it comes with the next best thing; 3 DisplayPorts and a single HDMI connector for external monitor connections.
Other connectivity options for this desktop include Wireless connection: Integrated Bluetooth 4.0 and Wireless LAN 802.11a/b/g/n/ac featuring Dual-band (2.4GHz and 5GHz) 1×1 technology. The front side also hides a sleekly built DVD-Writer that slides smoothly back into the frame.
Moving on, like customary in most desktop manufacturers, once you buy a desktop, you get a keyboard and mouse as complimentary.
Performance Powerhouse for your gaming and other tasks
Powering the heart and soul of this baby is the 4.0 GHz Intel Core i7 6700k Quad-core processor; second in place after Intel’s Core i7 7700K. The Core i7 6700K is pretty much the same processor used in most gaming and high-end performance business desktops because it comes with the chops to handle workloads such as video & photo editing and multitasking jobs.
On the CPU benchmark tests, it recorded an Average CPU Mark of 11,105; not any less impressive as the leading Core i7 7700K’s 12,159 CPU Mark. The Core i7 6700K processor handles Turbo speeds at 4.2 GHz and has 8M Cache. While it doesn’t completely take desktop number crunching to a whole new level, it certainly makes a good sprint at it.
To cater to multitasking needs, the HP Envy Phoenix 860-140 sports a 16GB DDR4 (2x8GB) memory that’s adequate, but expandable to 64GB (unbuffered with 16GB DIMMs) should your needs intensify or workload increase. Also, there’s plenty of storage to go around for media and data hogs on this Windows 10 desktop. You get 2TB of hard drive and 128 GB of a solid-state drive to power booting and multitasking. The 2TB HDD is plenty of storage for all your music, data, movie files and it should come in handy both at home and at the office.
This unit handles gaming thanks to nifty Video graphics card; the Nvidia GeForce GTX 980. The Geforce GTX 980 supports a list of features such as CUDA, 3D Vision, PhysX, GeForce Experience, GameStream and Virtual Reality improvements. On top of that, it handles itself well against some recent gaming titles in the market. We played a few games to put the graphics card through its paces and got some impressive results.

We were frankly taken aback by the HP Envy Phoenix 860-140 desktop, not just on paper, but also in performance. It neatly establishes a bond between great aesthetics, gaming performance, and affordable price. The specification list depicts a high-end gaming desktop owing to top-notch features such as an Intel Core i7-6700K 4.00 GHz Processor, 16GB DDR4 (2144) SDRAM, 2TB HDD/ 128 GB SSD and Nvidia GeForce GTX 980 graphics card. It’s not revolutionary but it’s got an appealing set of features, fast speed, great performance, easily accessible and upgradeable body all at a budget price thus making it easily recommendable.
