The silver exterior of the HP Envy 15-as020nr glitters a dull silver, with the hp insignia at the middle of the lid as the center of attraction. Its corners are smoothly rounded at the front, sharp edged at the back end toward the hinge. Turning the machine around reveals a shinny silver strip attached to the lid, with the word ENVY registered at the left end of the strip.HP Envy 15-as020nr Review - MOGZTech If you’ve been up to date with HP releases in the recent past, you’ll remember the HP Spectre 13 with piston hinges… a wonderful spectacle to behold. This slight change of design shows that HP does not fear trying new things out. On opening up the lid, the angled silver strip props up the keyboard and chassis at an angle, making it easier and more comfortable to type. Thus it serves both for comfort purposes as well as aesthetics. But don’t expect yoga with the hinges… its a plain simple clamshell laptop. Generally, if its a question of design, it looks good. However, it can’t compete with most 13 inchers like the Spectre x360, Acer Swift 7 or the Spectre 13 to which more of the design attention has been directed.

Around the 13.3 inch display is a black bezel outlining its boarder. At the top bezel is a HD Camera with dual array digital microphone. The lid and chassis are both made of aluminum giving the HP Envy 15-as020nr a premium feel. Interestingly, despite having a metallic finish, it weighs only 4.3 lbs (1.93 kgs) while the standard weight of 15 inch display machines is around 5 lbs, give or take. Okay, its not crazy light, but at least it won’t break you back when you take it for a short ride outside.

The HP Envy 15-as020nr’s silver chiclet keys are well spaced, more square shaped than rounded, and have are backlit. The backlight shines a bright white, complementing the color of the keys. Being a 15 inch display, there’s enough real estate for a full-sized keyboard with a numeric keypad. And to add to that, a large palm rest and an equally large trackpad. And to crown it all, key travel is quite decent thus making the whole typing experience quite pleasant.

The trackpad for that matter is quite responsive both online and offline. It supports multi-gestures finger movements and for the most part, won’t disappoint.

The HP Envy 15-as020nr’s 15.6 Inch display is not a spectacle, but beats ordinary at least. With a 1080p resolution, and a wide area to distribute the pixel, its no wonder why a 13 inch display will look glorious in comparison. However, since its an IPS panel rather than a TN panel color reproduction is still impressive at angles below 80 degrees from the center of the screen any direction.

The display is touch sensitive: it’s smooth and responsive whether you use your fingers or get yourself a stylus pen for drawing.

Color saturation is at 57% of the sRGB scale, which is good, but not so great. In comparison to laptops like the ASUS ZenBook UX330UA-AH54 that bears a QHD display with 100% sRGB color gamut, the HP Envy 15-as020nr will definitely pale in comparison. However, while not exactly glorious, display quality is indeed sound and impressive. Further considering the other high end specs that it comes with, like a Core i7-6500U processor that you’d likely find in machines bordering $1000, one can’t help but appreciate the deal.HP 15-as020nr Review - MOGZTech The glossy display has a 281 cd/m brigtness, sufficient for indoor use and outdoor use but not well very usable under direct sunlight.

Another concern to consider is backlight bleeding. It occurred around the top left corner, but may be else where in other cases. However, this is only notable when the screen background is dark, such as when watching a movie with a black boarder. For most common uses, it will not be a very significant problem… though that depends with the user.

A 15 inch machine simply isn’t cut for much travel, a 13 Inch machine would be a better choice if that’s what you need. You may find the ASUS ZenBook 3 UX390UA, or the Dell XPS 13-1950 a good excellent choices to cater for that.

Comes with all the necessary ports such as 3 USB 3.0 ports, 1 USB 3.0 Type C port, HDMI port and microphone/headphone jack. Missing from the list is a thernet port… which means that the use of a USB ethernet adapter is unavoidable if you need this feature.HP Envy 15-as020nr

Among the the best features of the Intel Core i7-6500U Processor is it efficiency. It’s based on the Skylake MicroArchitecture and has base clock speed of 2.5 GHz and can turbo up to 3.1 GHz. It’s among the high end processors available, and can handle most tasks well without bottlenecking. Thus word processing, or browsing, or streaming videos from YouTube or Netflix isn’t going to be an issue.

Integrated with the processor is the Intel HD Graphics 520 which while offering good quality graphics, is not best suited for gaming or heavy graphical use. However, Photoshop , AutoCAD and other graphical softwares run well, though slowing down in certain operations. Games like alien Isolation, Minecrafts and League of legend play comfortably at moderate graphical settings at an average of 30 fps. Fan noise gets a little loud when under heavy load, definitely noticeable and mildly annoying. If you’re seriously into gaming, then this is not the machine for you. A better choice would be the ASUS ROG GL552VW-DH71 which falls below $1000.HP Envy 15-as020nr 15 notebook Review - MOGZTech See aslo: Best gaming laptops 2017

Along with the processor is 12 GB of RAM and 256 GB Solid State M.2 memory. With such a combination, speed goes without saying. Boot time from sleep to work ready is a mere 10 seconds, and everything else is a just as fast.

Battery and audio

As mentioned earlier, more consideration in most thin and light is battery life over raw power, and so it is with the HP 15-as020nr. According to the manufacturer, it aught to last 10 hours 45 minute. This is more ‘optimistic’ than it is real, with real life battery time being between 8 and 9 hours with moderate use, and 3 to 4 hours with heavy use.

Without going into much detail, audio quality is excellent leaving little room for constructive criticism.

HP Envy 15-as020nr Review

While HP Envy 15-as020nr looks don’t spark that super star feeling you get with a super thin and elegant machine, it does indeed make an amiable impression. Performance wise, it ranks high, well in the range of the XPS 13-9360 and other thin and light laptops, but is of course not fully optimized for super performance. Thus the HP Envy 15-as020nr makes and excellent choice anyone who prefers a laptop in place of a desktop machine, and who isn’t in search for over the roof performance.
