Dell has changed the gears with the introduction of the XPS Tower Special Edition desktops. Our reviewed model is the new design, a tweaked version of the Dell XPS 8900 desktop. From a single look, you can figure out that nothing much has changed from the revered older model which had nothing about them that scream gaming. The Dell XPS 8910-10420BLK Desktop still is mundane in design, and its description still doesn’t give any reference to gaming or anything remotely related to it.

This is the second version that Dell has released with such, so I guess it’s a look here to stay. However, Dell says the system is equipped with feature-packed specs that can handle Oculus Rift and other 3D titles. Well, after reviewing other configurations I am a believer. But necessarily for this Dell XPS8910-10420BLK Desktop. Let’s break it down first.

Dell XPS 8910 Special Edition Review

  • Compact design
  • Thoughtful layout allow upgrades to be done easily
  • Runs quietly and stable
  • Sufficient selection of ports
  • Low starting price- affordable

  • Slow processor
  • Lower storage capacity than the competition
  • Lacks SSD storage

  • The Dell XPS8910-10420BLK Desktop Check at Amazon might not give you a rush from a single glance…from a second or third glance even, but it packs some great features (3.4 GHz Intel Core i7, 16 GB RAM, 2 TB HDD, and GTX 750Ti graphics), silent fan and performs without drama. The hoot design has a lot to be desired because it allows easy access for replacement/upgrades.

Dell is known widely to be an achiever and best maker of top selling laptops and desktops. It’s only rival is the desktop gaming scene being the Alienware brand, but you wouldn’t tell from looking at it. To be precise, our reviewed version, the Dell XPS8910-10420BLK Desktop doesn’t look like much of a champion for a distant look. It is housed in a simple enclosure; black and glossy and subtle in every design. Like its silver brother the Dell XPSE8910-7942SLV Desktop, it’s inconspicuous and easily invisible in an office with other desktops. Dell XPS 8910-10420BLK Desktop

As for size, you don’t have to worry. We were impressed with the Dell XPS8910-10420BLK small size. It measures 13.3 x 7 x 15.1 inches and weighs 27.9 lbs. Finding a place a fit the desktop shouldn’t a hassle, as it’s almost half the measure of other bigger beefier rivals in its field. If you know about the Acer’s Predator G-Series desktops, that would give you a great example to compare with. The Dell XPS x8900-3131BLK Tower is a desktop from the previous Dell XPS 8900 version. It is slightly larger than our new review version; it measures 7.3 x 17.49 x 16.01 inches which is a few inches larger than our version.

We loved the ingenious design of the case as it now allows easy access of the hood whenever you need to check or upgrade your components. I had no problem accessing the motherboard or power supply and removing the HD cages was a cinch thanks to the new case set up.

Just as other dell desktops, Dell offers a wireless keyboard and mouse with the desktop Tower; at no extra costs. I wouldn’t expect it any other way when you buy from such a big brand. So, how does the keyboard and mouse look? Well, if the desktop design didn’t give you a hint, then I’ll spell it out. It’s a simple as the desktop; dark in color and not much of a gamer-centric look to go by. The keyboard isn’t built for writers or long typing either, the keys don’t have much key travel to allow for that.

This new design of the Dell XPS 8910 Desktop features four new USB ports at the front, unlike the previous version that only housed two at the top of the desktop. In fact, the headphone/microphone combo and two USB ports that were previously located at the top are now proudly facing forward at the front.

To be precise, there are four USB ports at the front. This version has seen a new blend of ports added to the previous version; there are now a total of seven (7) USB 3.0 ports and eleven (11) USB 2.0 and 3.0 in total divided between the front and the back of the unit. This goes towards helping a healthy access to the system without struggle especially if you have multiple components to connect.

Other connectivity includes a built-in Wi-Fi so that it doesn’t have to be connected to the internet through a wired cord.

Our reviewed unit is powered by a core 6th Generation Intel Core i7-6700 Processor, a quad-core chip with to 4.0 GHz turbo when overclocked and 8M of Cache. The processor comes with a 1 DIMM 16GB, DDR4 memory with a speed of 2133MHz so that demanding programs can run without lag. (The memory is upgradeable to 64 GB). That also means it can deal with more data at a single instance and multitask and at the same time reduce power consumption.

On storage metrics, the Dell XPS8910-10420BLK Desktop features a 2TB 7200 rpm Hard Drive which we were very pleased with. You can be sure to enjoy plenty of room for storage of movies, games, and data. However, it would have been splendid to have an SSD like the competition, but since it does not, you can take it upon yourself to tweak it. This is perhaps the single biggest drawback for this desktop and the reason why it falls behind other compact gaming machines.

Combined, both these features work marvelously to bring forth an unstoppable machine. The can be a great work force for gaming new title thanks to the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 750Ti. Additionally, you’re your primary work is video and software, then you’re in luck. It performs mighty well with video and image editing software such as Lightroom, Pinnacle Ultimate 20 and Photoshop.

The fans here run both cool and quiet, a concept that many desktop in the industry struggle with. The vents have Optimal Airflow, from the sides of the chassis and the rear. The air control seems to work swiftly for Dell making the system run silently. As of now, the quietness of the desktop is a major selling point for the manufacturer.

The Dell XPS 8910 configuration we reviewed comes with a 2 TB Hard drive with no SSD to go with. Fortunately, there is a lower configuration of that comes with a 1 TB.

The Dell XPS 8910 Gaming Desktop has no fancy lighting and fancy looks just as we mentioned in our other Dell XPS 8910 reviews. That, therefore, means the RGB color lighting software is not available for this desktop.

In conclusion, let’s wind down by going through a few points. The Dell XPS 8910 Desktop has the best in features except for perhaps the GPU where it would have done better with a Nvidia GTX 1070 or 1080, but that’s no heart-stopper considering its price bracket. Also, it’s every avid gamer’s dream to own a machine with gamer centric looks, which it obviously defies. Can we do without it? Well yes again.

Aside from these two, the general performance is peak and blameless save for the lack of SSD which in a way slows everything down. This is the heart of my whole argument without which the desktop would have had a standing chance against its competition. If you can bare that, then this is an ideal laptop for you and we recommend it. It won’t make you fall in love but it’s small, powerful and reliable brushing shoulders with entry gaming companies like iBuyPower, Digital Storm and Origin. Check it out.
