  • Great design
  • Small footprint which is great if you’re short on space

The Dell Inspiron i3650-1551SLV isn’t the flashiest desktop and neither does it brag of a hulky processor as most other desktops we’ve reviewed. But it comes with enough oomph to power your home and office needs. And that’s not mentioning plenty of memory (8GB) and storage (1TB) to store your family’s music, movies and videos. It does all that while all the while saving you space so you have all your files and essentials together.

The Dell Inspiron i3650-1551SLV is ranked averagely, a portable middle child, on our home computers list. Besides a rich and satisfactory set of hardware its outside design is equally impressive. The chassis is made of a sturdy metal case that does a superb job of covering the innards and it also leaves a room for ventilation at the rear.

The case is adorned with a dull black shade but the highlight of this shell is the front side, which fronts a black plastic cover polished to perfection. The smoothly curved out corners and exemplary finish make the Dell Inspiron stand tall among other home desktops in our list. Dell has always managed to shake the industry with groundbreaking products with a clever balance of elegance and subtlety; case and point the Dell XPS Tower Edition.

Other extra features worth mentioning are the in-let ventilation system at the bottom front of the desktop and the right panel outlets for thermal control. The front vents have a mesh-like-inlet to filter out the dirt and the give the desktop an overall sleek and modern feel.

You won’t have to grind to lift the Inspiron either; a positive and legitimately welcomed thought in our books. It weighs 16.7 pounds and measures 11.1 x 6.1 x 13.8 inches. The Lenovo Ideacentre 300 Desktop 90DA00LPUS is taller in comparison measuring 16.14 x 6.3 x 13.98 inches while the Acer Aspire TC-780-AMZi5 (17.43 x 6.89 x 15.67 inches) is taller.

Dell Inspiron 3650 i3 review: PORTS

The port system sits at the heart of connectivity for every desktop providing new ways to link up to other devices. The Inspiron has a rich variety of ports for that purpose; nothing dramatic better yet futuristic like the Thunderbolt or USB Type-C. But we loved the low-key characteristic as it complement s the low price. We haven’t found a budget home desktop with futuristic ports at this budget price but I promise to update if and when it crosses our path. For now, we have a decent list which we can be proud of.

The port system sports a single HDMI input which is very handy when it comes to connecting to your monitor. The front section has two USB 3.0 ports, an audio port, SD card reader and power button. The USB 3.0 ports are color coded in blue.

Meanwhile, at the rear there is the set of audio jacks, a VGA port, the HDMI (originally mentioned), four USB 2.0 ports and an Ethernet connector port. The VGA and HDMI ports allow you and your family a stable connection to a monitor, TV or any other high-end monitor, while the Ethernet allows connection to the internet.

Like everything else on this desktop, the processor is also middling. The 3.7 GHz Core i3-6100 dual-core processor won’t put a smile across performance enthusiasts’ face but it sure will work just fine for casual home and office users. The daunting task to perform rests on the processor’s shoulders but it works hand in hand with the memory and storage which for this case is 8GB and 1TB mechanical hard drive storage.

The 8GB of memory is plenty for handling the tall multitasking order in everyday tasks. The hard drive storage is also vast enough to cover your music, movies and image gallery files without any hiccups.

Ultimately, the three couple up well to give a reliable clockspeed and plenty of muscle to manage stable performance and handle light office work for instance video streaming, MS Office, watching movies.. The Inspiron would have managed a lot more, but Dell did not include a discrete card to handle intensive graphic based programs and software. As a result it can’t even handle low setting image editing and 3D modeling, they’re all impeded. Still, it still remains a forgivable tradeoff for the price it sells for and target audience it markets to.
