We are huge advocates of choice – even if it means picking a less popular brand – as long as they have great hardware and can deliver remarkably. Enter the CYBERPOWERPC Gamer Xtreme VR GXiVR8020A2, a sleek desktop optimized for gaming and is VR ready yet managing to stay affordable for most.

  • Readily upgradable
  • AMD Radeon RX 480 graphics
  • VR ready
  • Fast Kaby lake processor
  • Decent price for a gaming machine
  • Decent HDD storage amount
  • No Bloatware

  • Not so great keyboard and mouse
  • Lacks SSD storage
  • No extra PCIe x16 slots for expansion
  • Lacks Bluetooth
  • Not exactly fit for hardcore gaming

The CYBERPOWERPC Gamer Xtreme VR GXiVR8020A2 | Amazon offers a stunning design and eye candy LED lighting that sets just the right ambiance for gaming. It also offers impressive specs for entry-level gaming and a great price to go with, but its got one caveat; a poor quality keyboard and mouse which one will have to upgrade. The graphics card has a decent amount of RAM size but our worry is that the RX 480 GPU might struggle with frame rates in future AAA games especially on ultra settings. Otherwise, for now it is a lethal entry-level gaming desktop we recommend.

The CYBERPOWERPC Gamer Xtreme VR GXiVR8020A2 | Amazon design isn’t exactly the industry-leading but it will catch your eye as soon as the red LED lights are lit. The stylish case is decent with its right-angled corners, but the CYBERPOWERPC receives most of its praise thanks to the see-through Plexiglas case door that adorns its right side panel. Even without an out-of-the-world designed chassis, the general look and feel of this desktop is a testament of raw power.

It’s easy to access the inside through the side panel, which exposes the well laid out cable, spacious and expandable interior, cooling system (not liquid cooled) and motherboard (Intel B150). There’s plenty of space inside the case which makes adding extra components a walk in the park.Moving on to size, the CYBERPOWERPC Gamer Xtreme VR desktop measures 20.2 x 9.2 x 21.6 inches which isn’t exactly cramped. It should not take up much room on your desk or under it. It generally is a midsized desktop with almost similar measurements as traditionally designed desktop towers like the Dell XPS Tower Edition, but the CYBERPOWERPC has a more gaming flair. If I were to be a little skeptical, I loved the handle on the Lenovo Ideacentre Y710 Cube because it made it very portable, and that’s a design feature that would be great with gaming desktops. But of course, our unit doesn’t have that…it’s a souped-up metal case with see-through screens on its side panels.

And you have to carry it with both hands –not so great for occasional LAN party frequenters! Anyway, if that gets to your nerves too, a portable desktop or an all-in-one (AIO) desktop should do the job for you. Both will save you some space but on the downside, you will have to give up expandability.

The CYBERPOWERPC Gamer Ultra GUA4500A desktop, the better-looking brother of our reviewed unit, has a bold look and some pretty wild hardware. If aesthetics are your thing, it might be a great desktop to have on your corner, for about 150 more bucks (for which you get a better performance processor, 6GB Nvidia GTX 1060 and your OS is installed on the 120 GB SSD…really worth a look!).

The I/O selection was also decent. The front panel doesn’t have any ports, you’ll find them all at the rear and top deck next to the power button. There are 6 x USB 3.0 ports, 2 x USB 2.0 ports, a HDMI port, Display port for external monitor connections and finally an RJ-45 Network Ethernet 10/100/1000 to connect any modem/router. If you use a wired internet and hardly move your desktop from room to room, the rear port should work fine for you.

CYBERPOWERPC offers an exclusive Keyboard and Mouse as part of the package. The two have great aesthetics and the red and black color scheme give the combo a gaming demeanor. However, they don’t perform as efficient as real gaming keyboard and mouse set. If you have some money, it would be nice to invest in a better version for precision gaming.

Something else, CYBERPOWER generously included 24X DVD+RW Optical Drive to cater for all your software installation and movies or music you might want to watch/listen to the old school way.

Wireless connectivity is via an 802.11AC Wi-Fi adapter. Unfortunately, Bluetooth connectivity is not available. One may have to buy a Bluetooth dongle to gloss over this shortfall. Check out a few suggestions here.

The CYBERPOWERPC Gamer Xtreme VR desktop’s design is great but performance is its main raison d’etre. As a result, it comes with a 3.00 GHz Intel Core i5-7400 processor, 8 GB DDR4 RAM that’s great for multitasking and 1TB (7200 rpm) of the mechanical hard drive. In comparison, the CYBERPOWERPC Gamer Ultra GUA4500A desktop, a better-looking CYBERPOWERPC option, offers more storage in terms or Solid state drive (120GB). Moving on, our unit also features an AMD Radeon RX 480 graphics unit with 4GB RAM but this GPU isn’t quite as powerful as other leading graphics units; I’m talking about Nvidia 1070 and 1080. Fortunately, you can exchange the GPU for a Nvidia equivalent should you need to upgrade.

Graphics and Gaming

It’s worth mentioning that the AMD Radeon RX 480 (GDDR5 memory) is the cheapest graphics card to reach the recommended specifications for Oculus Rift and HTC Vive VR sets. Also, although this GPU is mid-ranged and not exactly as groundbreaking as others high-end Intel units, it allows gamers to play at Full HD and 1440p. Additionally, the system has enough power (600W) to run this budget desktop and many others in its league.

On our gaming rundown test, the CYBERPOWERPC managed decent frame rates, especially for medium settings. It played most games on 1080p or 1440p without breaking a sweat and maintained playable frame rates at both these resolutions. Hitman played at 68.7fps at Full HD and 54.3fps at 1440p while the Rise of the Tomb Raider played at 62.5 fps at Full HD and 43.2 fps at 140p.

Gaming is the highlight of this GPU but it was great to know that AMD Radeon RX 480 graphics unit also supports DirectX- 12 meaning the system can run for a few years without requiring major updates. It also has video outputs which are crucial for running VR sets. You can opt to use the DisplayPort to connect your external monitor and simultaneously connect to your VR set through the HDMI port. Graphics aside, the system comes with a clean installation of the Windows 10 operating system and surprisingly without any Bloatware which has always been a welcomed aspect in our books.

The two caveat of this system is that there is no Bluetooth which limits data transfer between devices. Secondly, the system lacks a PCIe x 16 slot which majorly frustrates future efforts to expand. Speaking of connectivity, this desktop would work perfectly with the ASUS VG248QE 24-inch Full HD (1080P) panel monitor we reviewed recently. The monitor has a 144Hz gaming screen with a 1ms response which all comes together resulting in great visuals especially while gaming.

The CYBERPOWERPC Gamer Xtreme VR GXiVR8020A2 is a remarkable desktop with simple boxed design, lighting and noise levels. It comes with some high-quality hardware convert to the ever-elusive decent gaming and VR performance. I’m talking about hardware such as 3.00 GHz Intel Core i5-7400 processor, AMD RX 480 (with 4GB RAM) graphics unit, a big boxy elegant design and lots of space for adding components which should all appeal to budget conscious gamers.

It’s a great desktop, but it doesn’t promise rich gaming experience so avid gamers should look elsewhere. For that reason, we recommend the CYBERPOWERPC Gamer Ultra GUA4500A desktop which costs slightly more (about $150 more) but offers better hardware, performance and design ideal for all extreme gamers.

Consider also the CyberpowerPC Gamer Ultra GUA3400A Gaming Desktop, a fairly affordable desktop with plenty of user reviews at Amazon and top-notch hardware that warrants the love. It offers better has specs than our review machine but with a heftier price tag.
