DESIGN AND FEATURES
The Asus VivoBook S15 S510UA-DS51 is among the more stylish designed budget laptops in the market today. It’s features a pale gold finish that coats the brushed aluminum lid, the keyboard deck, sides, and bottom. At the top of the lid is a fair looking chrome Asus logo that forms the center of attraction in a sea of gold.
Its body is not as sturdy as other heavier models in the same category, such as the Acer Aspire E15, but not flimsy either. Flex is notable on the lid and on the keyboard deck when you apply some intentional force to it. It is as strong as it needs to be to handle the strains that come with travel.
On matters mass and breadth, the Asus VivoBook S15 S510UA-DS51 weighs only 3.7 pounds and is only 0.7-Inches thin. Compared to the Asus FX503VD-WH51 at 4.9 pounds and 1-Inch thick, or the Acer Aspire E15 at 5.3 pounds and 1.2-Inches thickness, the Asus VivoBook S15 is a winner.
If power and performance on a budget are really what you need, then the Asus VivoBook S410UN-NS74 may be worth your time. It comes with a dedicated graphics card, weighs 3.2 pounds and is also 0.7-Inches thick, but costs $100 more than our review unit. However, the two are worlds apart when it comes to cost.
In full measure, the Asus VivoBook S15 S510UA-DS51 comes in at 14.2 x 9.6 x 0.7 Inches, noticeably trimmer than most 15.6-Inch laptops, for instance, the Acer Aspire E15 that measures 15 x 10.2 x 1.2 Inches.
Among its more notable features include a 15.6-Inch Full HD display (1920 x 1080p). The 7.8mm thin bezel is what Asus refers to as a NanoEdge display. If this were a Dell laptop, they would refer to this feature as InfinityEdge. Such a thin bezel makes it possible to squeeze a 15.6-Inch screen into almost a 14-Inch form factor.
Endowed with an IPS panel with wide viewing angles(178 degrees) and a glare-free finish, the Asus VivoBook S15 S510UA-DS51 offers an excellent viewing experience. Characteristic of IPS panel displays, color is bright and inviting, brightness levels sufficient for working in the open sun. Contrast levels are equally appealing. In addition to that, the Splendid Technology lets you play around with visuals until you get that perfect setting for whatever content you are watching. It comes with four modes: Normal mode is ideal for daily tasks, Vivid mode optimizes contrast to deliver stunning photos and video, Eye Care mode reduces blue light levels to ease eye strain while Manual mode allows for personalized color adjustments.
Perhaps we can attribute the shallow key travel to the overall thin profile of the machine. Deep key travel gives the keys a more robust tactile feel, and thus enhances typing speed. In the case of the Asus VivoBook S15 S510UA-DS51, flat-topped chiclet keys present a plastic feedback as the keys bottoms out – definitely not our favorite keyboard. However, we don’t want to make it sound too bad. With a little time on the deck, one gets used to the feel and is soon right at home.
The glass-like touchpad is smooth and precise. At its top right is a fingerprint sensor that supports Windows Hallo which lets you log in without having to input a password.
Given a choice, we would forgo the USB 2.0 ports for some more USB 3.0 ports. However, considering that it is a budget laptop, we take it as one of the trade-offs that to made it possible. USB 2.0 ports are ideal for low-speed data transfer, which is why they are ideal for peripherals such as a mouse and keyboard. The Asus S510UA-DS51 comes with two of these on the left side plus a card reader. The right edge hosts the power port, a single USB 3.0 port, an HDMI port and a USB 3.1(Type C) port.
The Asus VivoBook S15 S510UA-DS51 comes with a powerful Intel i5-8250U processor, which is a quad-core processor with a base clock speed of 1.6GHz (3.4GHz on TurboBoost) and integrated Intel UHD graphics. Among its activated features include HyperThreading, Turbo Boost, and Virtualization. Teamed with 8GB of DDR4 RAM and a 256GB M.2 solid state drive, it gives the Vivobook a swift startup, rapid application launch, and effortless multi-tasking ability.
Watching 1080 p videos, photo editing and office work proved but a walk-over for this small unit. With the additional slot for RAM upgrade, one can easily move from 8Gb to 16Gb, although we feel this is really unnecessary. Most application and games run comfortably on 8GB of RAM thus scarcely raising the need for an upgrade. Also considering that this is not a gaming laptop, it is very unlikely that you will need all that extra RAM. See why here.
Gaming performance is still subpar compared to laptops with dedicated graphics cards. Most modern games play comfortably at low settings and resolution but struggle to play over 60 FPS on medium 768p settings.
Audio and camera
The Asus VivoBook S15 S510UA-DS51 bottom-mounted 2 Watt speakers are better than we expected with such a thin profile. Impressively, at max volume, they offer loud and distortion free sound sufficient to fill a small room. While low notes are not as well represented (characteristic of thin laptops), they are still better articulated than in most laptops. The palm rests reverberated quite noticeably, however, since the speakers are located directly underneath the front corners. Unfortunately, the speakers quality present a wide disparity in the quality from the inbuilt webcam. Images were far from clear whether shot in a bright room or in the dark (even worse) – appearing pixelated and smudgy.
Heat management and battery life
The Asus VivoBook S15 S510UA-DS51 comes with an efficient cooling system. Unlike other notebooks that come with two fans, this unit comes with a single fan and heat pipe. The fan stays on at all times but fortunately runs very silent even when under loads such as browsing or video streaming.
Its 3-Cell 42Whr battery lasts for 4hours 32 minutes when browsing the web on WiFi. Cranking down every power setting and running on energy saving mode yields a little over 10 hours of battery runtime, enough for a whole day of use. Charging from a nearly flat battery level to full capacity takes an hour and 45 minutes, which is a short time compared to other 15-Inch laptops with larger battery packs.
Despite the few draw-backs it suffers, the Asus VivoBook S15 S510UA-DS51 is one among the better alternatives when it comes to budget laptops. It may not outperform all its competitors, but sure stands its ground as a lightweight, the stylish and inexpensive laptop that offers great value for money.
