ASUS VivoBook Pro N552VW Review
We’ve seen a lot of laptops to come through our labs with Touch screens; tablets, PCs, Ultrabook, but for all of these systems touchscreen capability was the sole defining feature. This is the shiny bit of flash that’s the crowning jewel to draw a buyer’s attention. Well, the ASUS VivoBook Pro N552VW-DS79 laptop is a little bit differently with every specification checked but for its touchscreen.
- Great screen resolution (3480 x 2160 pixels)
- Ample screen estate (15 inch )
- Great gaming device
- Low battery life
- Lacks Touchscreen option
The ASUS VivoBook Pro N552VW-DS79 | Amazon stands shoulder to shoulder with the rest of industry players with 6th generation Intel Core i7-6700HQ processors. This gives it an edge over other laptops with lower processing powers and for that reason it is priced at slightly shy of 1000 bucks (as of writing this review).

DESIGN AND FEATURES
Asus has been famous for its broad designs using aluminum and we appreciate every single marvel from them. So as expected, the ASUS VivoBook Pro N552VW-DS79 isn’t far from that. Naturally, it is made of aluminum and a gorgeous set of concentric circles array its gorgeous lid.
At the centre of the lid is the gentle illuminated Asus logo, carefully centered right at the heart of the gazing light reflections from the circles. The chassis is all silver and it spans out through the entire lid, side and palm rest leaving the bezel with its black contrasting color.
Besides the elegance in design, the screen has ample viewing estate thanks to the 15.6 inch build. Additionally, the screen is a backlit IPS panel with advanced blissfull 4K/UHD display. That means a resolution of 3480 x 2160 pixels that give of the best in industry pictures, video and motion. Images are crystal, vivid and you definitely will enjoy the visuals. QHD offers double the amount of pixelation on the screen, be it horizontally or vertically.
As a result viewing angles are far much better; colors are richer, deeper and more vivid. In the end, it is more reason to trade in your FHD laptop for this Asus VivoBook Pro N552VW-DS79. Additional screen features include an ultra-wide color gamut of 72% NTSC, 100% sRGB and 74% Adobe RGB.
On size and weight matters the ASUS VivoBook Pro N552VW-DS79 measures 10.2 x 15.1 x 1.2 inches and weighs 5.6 pounds. Ideally this is not lightweight and I wouldn’t recommend travelling with it either. Don’t expected this powerhouse to fit into your laptop just as swift as a Acer Swift 7 does; chances are you will have to cram it hard to get it in there.

There is a good selection of ports on this Asus, but what stood out most for me was the Optical Drive DVD+R. This gives off a traditional feel to the ASUS VivoBook Pro N552VW-DS79 considering most laptop manufacturers dropped this option a while ago. Still, despite that it provides an option to backup data, add software and programs and play games.
- 1 x USB-C port
- 3 x USB 3.0 ports
- Single HDMI-out
- Mini-Display port
- A single RJ45
- One COMBO audio jack
- 2-in-1 card reader (SD+MMC)
It was good to see the USB Type –C port which is slowly catching on for Asus laptops. USB Type C is best for transfer of data and doubling up as a charger. The HDMI is also an asset here; reliable mostly for connecting an external 4K monitor. The three USB 3.0 would work perfectly should you need a wireless keyboard, mouse or just simply want to connect an external hard drive.
Wireless connectivity is enhanced through the 802.11ac Wireless LAN and the 10/100/1000 Gigabit Base T Ethernet.
To answer the question whether the ASUS VivoBook Pro N552VW-DS79 laptop is a gamer or not, we had to compare it to other gaming rigs under $1000. That would put it under the ranks of HP Pavilion 15, Asus ROG GL552, Dell Inspiron 15 7000, Acer Aspire v15 Nitro black Edition , Alienware 13 and the Lenovo Y700 14 inch just to name a few.
These notebooks attest to the fact that you don’t have to lose a leg or an arm or the soul of your firstborn to afford a gaming rig. They manage to what the fancy $3500 rigs do; running taxing graphic games like Witcher 3, Wild Hunt and Metro at solid frame rates.
What they have in common is that most have a Nvidia 960M GPU or lower (950M) graphics card to manage to game. Additionally, the cards straddle the fence between gaming and entertainment while doing it. The contest only comes when it comes to performance and battery life; that is where the chaff is split from the wheat.
So, let’s head back to the ASUS VivoBook Pro N552VW-DS79 laptop to figure out where it stands. The VivoBook has a sultry but sophisticated NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M GPU, which I hope you now understand where to place it.
We ran a few games on it and sure, it does allow a healthy range of modern games to play at decent frame rates. Photo, video and 3D processing can also be done on this system thanks to the GPU and Core i7 processor.
The ASUS VivoBook Pro N552VW-DS79 is outfitted with a 6th generation Intel Core i7-6700HQ processor. It has been paired with 8GB of RAM, to offer better overall performance than other comparable systems. Thanks to the faster processor, performance is also better for gaming and the like.
The CPU sports a record speed of 2.6GHz and boasts of 6 megabyte of cache storage. The 8GB DDR4-2133 SDRAM is also coupled with 1TB of HDD. The combination of HDD and SSD is very important for a better user experience. While SSD is expensive it supplements storage if you need things done fast and accurately: that equates to quick boot ups and app launches, the need to securely save your data when you shut it your laptop (without switching it off) to catch your next flight and more.
This is an advantage PC buyers didn’t know or have until recently and so a laptop configured with both HDD and SSD stands out. eMMC flash storage would be have been better or just simply 256GB. But it for this model, you will have to contend without either of those as it only comes with 1TB HDD.
The 1TB should be particularly handy to home office users and students all without the worry of losing the much esteemed performance along the way. Hopefully, the State of the art Windows 10 Home will do a better job soothing irked folks who were waiting on SSD.
The palm rest and general surface area of the laptop are silver colored and polished. And from distance you can witness the air of sophistication unfold. VivoBook Pro sports a sharp, all-aluminum body and has a backlit keyboard that is great for typing and gaming. It isn’t a colored backlit keyboard and not spill resistant either.

Things I loved
The Core i7 processor provides great performance for every day home and office work. The Nvidia GeForce GTX 960M GPU also allows for modern gaming and graphic intensive video and image processing.
Things I disliked
The large 15 inch screen coupled by the Nvidia GeForce GTX 960M GPU drains the battery. While it is great to have a large QHD screen, and gaming specs on this laptop, battery issues is a concept you will have to get very familiar with.
The Asus ROG GL552 was our Editor’s choice for under $1000 gaming laptop, followed by the Dell Inspiron 15 7000 series . Includes and 8 GB SSD and 1TB HDD as part of the package). They are both great gaming rigs with great performance if gaming is what you’re going for. Even so, the ASUS VivoBook Pro N552VW-DS79 doesn’t fail to impress as a desktop replacement or workstation. If you can ignore the few disadvantages, it can be a joy to work with.
