The Asus VivoBook F510UA-AH51 without doubt makes an excellent budget selection for anyone in search of a thin, light yet powerful machine. DESIGN AND FEATURES

At first glance, you won’t help but notice just how sleek the Asus VivoBook F510UA-AH51 is. Its thin form factor exterior is far from the common bulky run-off-the-mill designs that we often see in the budget category. We cannot help but appreciate the deliberated attention that was applied here.

Without careful attention, it is almost certain that you will conclude that the Asus VivoBook F510UA-AH51’s exterior is metallic. But that’s as far from reality as it gets. That goes to tell you how sturdy the body feels, so much so that its hard to distinguish what material it is made of. Its shell is made of hard plastic, well crafted to reflect light in a metal-like manner.

When, you will notice what the the machine tapers from the hinges toward the palm rest. Thanks to the large display, there is sufficient room for a full size keyboard, a large centrally placed touch pad and lots of palm rest real estate. The keyboard is made up of black chiclet keys that have decent travel and are comfortable to type on. However, there is no backlighting for this unit. The touch is similarly responsive and reliable.

Most desktop replacement laptops are significantly thicker and heavier than our review model. Take for instance the Acer Aspire E 15 E5-575-33BM which weights 5.27lbs and is 1.19 in thick, similar to the Acer Aspire E 15 E5-576G-5762. Compare that to 3.68 lbs and 0.8lbs in the Asus VivoBook F510UA-AH51. Isn’t that something. The compromise however is the lack of a DVD drive. Considering that mobility was the aim here, and also depending on what you expect to be using your machine for, this might not be too heavy a price to pay. Besides, that’s where the future is heading anyway.

Display

Within the notable thin bezel lies the Asus VivoBook F510UA-AH51’s second most impressive feature yet. I say second because, to me the processor is what makes this unit a prize. It comes with a 15.6-inch IPS display wit a 1929 x 1080 pixel resolution. By default, good viewing angles and color reproduction are the result of an IPS display, at least better than you will find in a TN display. That is exactly the case in the Asus VivoBook F510UA-AH51.Colors appear real and inviting. In addition to that, the anti-glare coating takes care of unwanted glare this making it easy to work over long periods of time without eye fatigue.

Right above the display is a 720p webcam and microphone. Image quality is not as crisp as you would expect from a 1080p camera, but all the same acceptable considering the category this machine falls in.

CONNECTIVITY

For a laptop this thin, the port selection that it comes with completely sufficient. On its right side is a microphone combo jack, USB 3.1 port (Types C), a HDMI port and a power jack. On its left side is a USB 3.0 port, a USB 2.0 port and a card reader. For a budget laptop, this is as good as it gets – more so when it comes with a USB 3.1 port (Type C). Wireless connectivity on the other hand is via Wi-Fi 802.11 ac and Bluetooth  4.1.

SYSTEM PERFORMANCE

Well, what’s the point of having a drop dead gorgeous laptop that just doesn’t impress when it gets to the hard-core stuff. That would be a waste. The Asus VivoBook F510UA-AH51 not only has the looks but the brawn to go with it. It comes with a powerful Intel Core i5-8350U processor, 8 GB of RAM and 1 TB of internal storage.

Processor

The Intel Core i5-8350U processor is based on the 14nm Kaby Lake Refresh architecture. It offers 4 physical cores and 8 threads, with a base clock speed of 1.6 GHz. Among its prized features include Hyperthreading, Turbo Boost and Virtualization, which you can read more about here. Thanks to the Turbo Boost feature, the clock speed can go all the way up to 3.39GHz on demand.

Integrated into the processor is the Intel UHD Graphics 620, initially clocked at 300 MHz and and can Turbo up to 1.1GHz. It is a moderately powerful integration, although not cut our for hard core gaming and other graphics intensive application. The processor and graphics unit have a combined TDP of 25W.

RAM

The Asus VivoBook F510UA-AH51 further comes with 8 GB of RAM, which we think is sufficient for the needs of consumers across the board in  2018. Find out why we think so here. One other thing we loved about VivoBook F510UA-AH51 is that it is upgradable for both internal storage and RAM. It can support a RAM upgrade of up to 32 GB.

Internal storage

If we would have wound up there and not talked about internal storage, this would have been the most perfect budget laptop you could find in the market today, period. However, we have to take note of the mechanical hard drive that just pours cold water on the otherwise untainted record. A mechanical hard drive is not all that bad, just until you compare it with a machine that runs on a solid state drive. The two are worlds apart in speed. However, the need for speed is relative, depending on the user’s personality as well as what one plans to use the machine for. If you are a low demand user, probably uses your machine for media consumption and some little productivity work, then a HDD is not that bad. However, if you plan to do some gaming and heavy productivity work you will really enjoy a better experience when you install a solid state drive.

Fortunately the Asus VivoBook F510UA-AH51 comes with an extra slot for an M.2 SATA SSD (not PCLe or NVMe), with the additional option of replacing the HDD with a 7mm SATA SSD. That does not mean you go opening up your computer if you don’t know how to. This unit is more of a challenge to find your way around its inside thanks to the the compact design that it comes in. So if you’re not seasoned in such, you will be on the safe side getting an expert to help you out.

Just to demonstrate how much of an advantage it is to have the Intel Core i5-8350 processor is at this price point, lets have a look at a few examples of laptops with near similar specs. The Dell VM2J4 Latitude 5590, Lenovo ThinkPad T580, Lenovo 20LB000YUS have a 500 GB HDD, a Core i5-8350U processor and 8 GB of RAM.  However, like most other laptops, they cost almost twice the price of out review laptop.

With the above specs, the Asus VivoBook F510UA-AH51 is well equipped to be a daily driver, since it can handle most everything you throw at it. Word processing, media, streaming of videos from online sources, programming, video editing among other tasks run flawlessly on it. When it comes to gaming, the Asus VivoBook F510UA-AH51 is well capable of handling most games in medium setting. Games like Grand theft Auto Vi, Far Cry 5, Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 can run very well on it at playable frame rates. However, if you are a heavy gamer, you may likely find a better fit for you in this article:  Best gaming laptops for 2018.

Sound and heat management

The Asus VivoBook F510UA-AH51 comes with as set of stereo speakers positioned on right above the keypad. Far from what we expected, the sound quality is quite nice, by far better than what you find in most laptops. Sound delivery is controlled by the ASUS SonicMaster software. Impressively, sound does not get distorted even at high volume levels.

Heat management is rather on the poor side. While running none demanding tasks heat is not at all a problem. However, once you decide to open multiple browser tabs with video content, or run a demanding software, you will notice the fan ramping up its speed and the machine gets quite steamy. This may be a challenge especially if you’re using it on your lap. Fan noise can get quite loud in such instances. However, this is a problem that can be managed with a cooling pad such as the HAVIT HV-F2056. Well, heating problems are not out of the norm with a thin and light design. An exception to that is the Eluktronics Pro-X P957HR that’s only 0.73 inch thick yet can handle the most demanding of games.

Battery life

The Asus VivoBook F510UA-AH51 comes with a 4 Cells Li-Ion that charges over a 42 W AC Adapter. This battery will take you comfortable through 4 hours of moderate use (browsing, word precessing, music) and 5 hours of light use. We also love how small the power brick is, which makes it convenient for light travel.

CONCLUSION

For a budget laptop, the Asus VivoBook F510UA-AH51 has a lot to offer. Taking to account its powerful Intel Core i5-8350U processor, sufficient 8GB of RAM, handy upgradablilty, slim and lightweight design, excellent display and impressive sound quality, it is safe to conclude that you get value for what you pay. On the the other hand, its important to take note of its heat management challenges, as well as consider the option of adding a solid state drive to it so as to harness its full potential.

If size and weight are not a major concern for you, you will find the Acer Aspire E 15 E5-576G-5762 a better option to our review unit, although costing arond $60 more. On the cheaper side, the Acer Aspire E 15 E5-576-392H | Amazon is also a good choice, although having a slightly less elite processor compated to our review unit.

Our take on the Asus VivoBook F510UA-AH51 is that it is an excellent budget laptop that will give you good value for the money you spend.
