Asus has curved up a spot for themselves in the gaming, laptop and desktop scene, and they don’t seem to be leaving anytime soon. Asus is well known for their ROG lineup and other rather modest products. Today we’re kicking off our coverage of entry level gaming monitors with the review of the ASUS VG248QE 24-inch 144Hz Gaming Monitor | Amazon. The Asus VG248QE is one such modest but appealing monitors; a budget option for users looking to buy a monitor with more than 60Hz.
It is a solidly built machine, running on 144Hz and comes with a slightly convenient option of ports than the monitors we’ve reviewed in recent past. As far as ergonomic adjustments go, Asus did a great job making sure the stand can be adjusted in every direction (discussed later). This among others is a great reason for considering this monitor.
Asus VG248QE review 2017
- 144Hz refresh rate
- Good screen color reproduction
- Tilt and rotation is possible
- Wall mounting VESA compatible
- Lacks USB ports
- Off angle viewing leaves a lot to be desired.
- Lacks adaptive refresh technology such as AMD’s FreeSync or Nvidia’s G-Sync
Any gamer can attest to the fact that what pleases them in a monitor, above everything else, is faster frame rates. Nine out of 10 times, gamers who’ve spent a good dime on their desktop desire a monitor that can keep up with the play. A monitor that can handle triple-A titles or at least offer smoother game play without lag and choppy motion. The Asus VG248QE | Amazon offers a good return for investment thanks to the 1-millisecond (gray-to-gray) pixel response and 144Hz refresh rate. Additionally, it is 3D capable and has a couple of ports to cover connectivity which while it does leaves a lot to be desired. All in all, we recommend the Asus VG248QE as an entry level gaming monitor and not further because it lacks some vital gamer centric appeal and features.

DESIGN AND FEATURES
The ASUS VG248QE 24-inch 144Hz Monitor is a decent entry level gaming monitor built to fit cover the 144Hz monitor space. It features a black chassis and sturdy well rounded base for support. The stand provides great lumbar support making sure the monitor has good ground clearance should you prefer it a few inches from the ground. The eSports-ready ergonomic stand allows for full tilt, swivel, pivot and height adjustment. The mounting arm in particular allows for height adjustment through a simple telescoping mechanism that allows vertical movements by sliding out one tube off another.
The monitor isn’t the thinnest screen and measures 569.4 mm x 340.4 mm x 57.3 mm (WxHxD) without the stand. One closer look it might not look as much but upon closer inspection you’ll find it holds a little more than an ordinary monitor. The stand is wall mounting VESA compatible which means it’s not just a neat looker. You can hang with it on any wall should it please you. It also has a cable management aid where all the wiring system is meant to pass through.
The ASUS VG248QE uses a 24 inch TN panel with a display with maximum resolution of 1920 by 1080 and matte anti glare coating. It has a striking resemblance to its larger brother the 27 inch Asus VG278HE | Amazon in design and features. The screen is has a 72% (NTSC) color saturation and 350 cd/m brightness which in rather fine considering you wouldn’t have to use the monitor under the sun. Worst case scenario, you would to bare a brightly lit room in which case 350 is plenty to cover you.
The buttons on this monitor are located beneath the lower bezel on the right side. Several of these buttons act as hot keys for picture presets and GamePlus adjustments. With the Aimpoint function, gamers can choose from four different aimpoint types which suit you best when and helps zero in your target in First Person Shooting (FPR) games. The gaming timer on the other hand helps the gamer keep track of the elapsed time in Real-time Strategy (RTS).
There are three inputs (HDMI, DisplayPort, dual-link DVI), all of which are located at the right rear facing downward. The DVI port is dual link DVI-D which points to the fact that it supports the 144Hz refresh rate (full Nvidia 3D Vision support). Right next to these are the audio port and headphone jack which come in very handy. The port system marks the downside of this monitor owing to the fact that it lacks USB ports and webcam. There are two small speakers catering for sound but they aren’t as loud as one would prefer thanks to their 2-watts power consumption
Thanks to the 1ms Trace Free II Technology, the Asus VG248QE has smooth motion playback for movies and games. The 144Hz also ensures no noticeable lag or artifacts. Video is smooth and we didn’t experience any problems viewing fast moving action especially while gaming. We tried a couple of games to test the Asus VG248QE limits and some games clearly manifested trailing color from a moving object. However, for PC games we didn’t experience any judder or ghosting.
The Asus VG248QE | Amazon isn’t the most technically proficient screen we’ve had in our labs but it does have a couple of commendable characteristics. It is a respectable 24-inch gaming monitor that uses 144Hz refresh technology and a fast 1-ms pixel response to achieve smooth game play. Asus dropped the ball on the viewing angle performance and by lacking to install some important USB ports. Even so, with the few features it comes with are make it a great option for entry level gaming even while not being our Editor’s choice for mid-sized gaming monitors. Best of all is that it is available for a relatively low price which is very crucial for lovers of video and gaming.
