We reviewed the ASUS ROG GT51CH-DB71 gaming desktop recently and we loved it. At that configuration, the ASUS ROG GT51CH-DB71 already packs enough power to handle pretty much any modern AAA gaming title at 1080p resolution. The Asus ROG GT51CA-XB71K gaming desktop takes high-res gaming right to the stratosphere with two NVIDIA GTX 1080 graphics cards in SLI. Now, there are two main reasons why anyone would want to install two GTX 1080s in SLI on their gaming rig. The first reason is resolution, two of NVIDIA’s powerful GPU’s installed on a single motherboard can push some gaming titles that support multi-GPUs like Ashes of singularity at above 60fps with the highest settings and at 4K resolution. Of course not all games support SLI or can scale to those levels but the few that do will have dramatic performance increases from 20% to above 90% increase.
The other less technical reason for running the world’s most powerful graphics cards in SLI is purely for glory (for lack of a better word). Users who want the fastest, beefiest gaming rigs will love this Asus ROG GT51CA-XB71K gaming desktop. Not many desktops come close to this beast in terms of performance. Just to paint the picture, for the non-technical reader-if the Asus ROG GT51CA-XB71K gaming desktop was a car it could be under the Hyper-car category (think Bugatti or Pagani). The Asus ROG GT51CA-XB71K gaming desktop also comes with 64GB of RAM, two 512GB SSDs and a 1TB HDD. It is one of the most powerful pre-built gaming rigs from Asus. DESIGN AND FEATURES
The Asus ROG GT51CA-XB71K shares most if not all the design characteristics of its brother, the ASUS ROG GT51CH-DB71 we reviewed recently. Both these gaming towers easily tick all the essential boxes when it comes to gaming design.
They are housed in a case that features a unique and truly aggressive, aerospace inspired design. It has sharp, chiseled edges and smooth surfaces complete with bright red LED lighting and a turbine-like air intake on the front of the chassis. This is not a desktop that you would be comfortable keeping elsewhere apart from the top of your desk setup in full view. The eye catching looks are clearly part of the package. A uniquely shaped glass window on the side panel allows us to get a glimpse of the brightly lit interior of the Asus ROG GT51CA-XB71K. We can tell that cable management is professionally done so is the construction and build quality.
Armed with a single screw driver, we gain access to the interior of the Asus ROG GT51CA-XB71K. Inside we get a plethora of expansion slots including, three M.2 slots, three PCIe express 16 Slots (for the GPUs) and two PCIe express 1 slots The upgrade options available on this Asus motherboard are quite endless.
The Asus ROG GT51CA-XB71K comes with a pre-installed copy of 64 bit Windows 10 Home. It also has a DL DVD±RW/CD-RW drive.
Bundled with the ROG GT51CA-XB71K gaming desktop is the ROG performance Mechanical Keyboard and gaming mouse. This is the same mechanical keyboard we reviewed with the ASUS ROG GT51CH-DB71. It’s is really nice to game on. A lot of hardcore pc gamers prefer the mechanical feedback you get from a traditional keyboard like this one. It really feels premium and adds that little spice to the gaming experience. The gaming mouse is also quite snappy as expected. This is an Asus gladius. It has several buttons that you can configure to control various aspects of your favorite games.
This gaming pc comes with so many ports, more than you could ever need actually. At the front we get a Headphone jack, a Mic jack, one modern USB 3.1 Type-C (Gen 2) port, one USB 3.1 Type-A (Gen 2) and two USB 3.1(Gen 1) ports. At the rear we get six USB 3.1 (Gen 1) ports, two USB 2.0, an S/PDIF-Out port and an RJ45 gigabit LAN port. Lastly we get 2 DVI ports, six Display ports (Version 1.4) and two HDMI ports from the video cards installed in SLI.
We get both Gigabit Ethernet connectivity as well as wireless 802.11ac Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.1 on the ROG GT51CA-XB71K gaming desktop.
So what kind performance do you get from this $3000 monster running TWO powerful video cards in SLI? Read on our Asus ROG GT51CA-XB71K gaming desktop review as we get to the meat of this experience.
The processor on this one is a liquid cooled 6th Gen Intel Core i7-6700K Processor. It has a 4.2 GHz base clock and a 4.6 GHz stability limit for overclocks. Physical memory is 64GB 2800 MHz DDR4 and internal memory is a 1TB and two (Yes two SSDs!) 512GB NVMe SSDs.
First a few facts about the GeForce GTX1080.
Built using the ultra-fast FinFET and high bandwidth GDDR5X video memory technologies, the NVIDA GeForce GTX 1080 is power efficient and packs enough graphics processing power to handle most modern games smoothly. It also supports Direct X 12 meaning most modern games will take advantage of this card.
Now the ROG GT51CA-XB71K comes with not one, but two GTX 1080 GPUs in SLI so our performance benchmarks are purely based on this setup’s SLI performance in terms of scaling as compared to a single GTX 1080.We tested four games both modern and older AAA titles at native 4K resolution on ultra-settings and straight away the SLI setup registered significant scaling as compared to the single card. Below are some of our results.
|Game tested||Single GTX 1080 fps||SLI 1080 fps||Scaling|
|Crysis 3||38 fps||Over 70fps||Over 45%|
|Witcher 3||40 fps||Over 68fps||Over 40%|
|Rise of the tomb raider||45 fps||Over 80fps||Over 50%|
|FarCry 4||60 fps||Over 100fps||Over 50%|
From the figures above, you can easily tell that the SLI setup really bumps up the frame rates for 4K gameplay for the most demanding games currently in the market.1080p gaming registers even higher scaling over 90%.
The ROG GT51CA-XB71K therefore is a pre-built gaming pc for the hardcore gamers out there. It really blows a lot of games out of the water if coupled with a capable high refresh rate G-Sync monitor. This desktop is also a Godsend for creative professionals and power users working with heavy software like Blender, Premiere and Maya as renders will take significantly less time to complete. It will also generally give you a smoother, more productive work environment as it can handle practically any workload you throw at it.
There’s no denying the ROG GT51CA-XB71K is definitely not cheap. This configuration might be a bit overkill for some gamers but there are some who want to jump into smooth 4K gaming anyway. SLI systems have their own niche and most of the users looking for this kind of this system have probably been running other SLI systems in the past or have the money to get this beast. Of course you can always go for the cheaper ASUS ROG GT51CH-DB71 we reviewed recently rocking a single GTX1080Ti which also gives you great performance. Your pick…
