Asus has been a major player in the pre-built gaming PC and gaming equipment industry for years. Their Republic of Gamers line of desktops is some of the most popular in this market. To be honest they introduced the concept of aggressive gaming design with their red-themed RGB lit rigs. Some people may find their bold design too off-putting, too vulgar for lack of a better word but the majority tend to love them specifically because of this aspect. Red has been the theme associated with Asus ROG desktop and devices. However, in a bid to attract a more diverse and bigger marketplace, Asus appears to have ventured away from their traditional ROG theme to make this ASUS ROG GD30CI GTX 1080 Ti desktop we review today.

However, not to get hung up on the aesthetics, the ASUS ROG GD30CI Gaming Desktop still remains a PC made for gamers-high end gamers. This bad boy is equipped with NVIDIA’s most powerful GPU yet, the GeForce GTX 1080Ti with 11GB. Also included is 16GB of RAM and an Intel Core i7-7700 processor. This make it capable of handling pretty much any modern game out there smoothly.

  • Powerful components
  • Ample and fast storage
  • Unique design
  • Detachable front panel
  • Detachable headphone hanger
  • Comes with a premium gaming keyboard and mouse

  • Inadequate cooling

This PC has a very bold design aesthetic. It, however, does pack a mean punch when it comes to gaming. The design on this PC is a strict marmite affair, we’ve actually come across prominent tech-heads somewhere on the internet who find it extremely unattractive. Our advice is to follow your heart; we love it so we got one as a Christmas gift for a very special person here at the office.

We get another opportunity to critique the design on the ASUS ROG GD30CI-DB71. The case features a bold sci-fi like design aesthetic that really makes the PC stand out no matter which angle you look at it. Some might find it a bit too ostentatious as we’ve mentioned before, but we love it. It’s the kind of PC you would find on a poster taped onto a teenager’s wall. The front panel is modular allowing you to detach individual components re-arrange them to create a total of six different styles. Oh, and it comes with a detachable headphone hanger! The hanger is quite special, you have to see it yourself to believe it, don’t take our word for it. It elongates from the top panel to allow us to hang our headphones when we are not using them.

Design aside, on the side we get a transparent panel that offers us a glimpse into the internals. As with most of Asus’s ROG desktops, this one does feature customizable Asus Aura RGB lighting making this beast glow quite nicely in the dark. Cable management and construction are tastefully executed; we have not complaints at all.

Once past the cover-a simple screw and pull exercise, we can see that the STRIX H270 chipset motherboard, has enough expansion slots to accommodate future upgrades making the ASUS ROG GD30CI-DB71 future-proof, at least for a few years. It has two PCIe x16 slots that we can use for an extra video card if we install more adequate cooling, twoM.2 connectors that we use to add an extra SSD, and four DDR4 expansion slots allowing us to add an extra 16 Gigs of RAM.The ASUS ROG GD30CI-DB71 comes with a pre-installed copy of Windows 10 Home which means we get DirectX 12, Xbox, and several other windows 10 software integration tweaks that make gaming super smooth.

Input Devices

Bundled with this unique gaming desktop are two very ordinary looking peripherals-the gaming keyboard and mouse. That said, don’t let the looks deceive you as these two are some of the best peripherals bundled with ROG gaming rigs. The keyboard looks expensive and feels expensive to the touch. It has very nice keys which require a slight actuation force and also have this really satisfying tactile bump. The gaming mouse has accurate tracking, great build quality, and good weighting.

We think the port selection on the ASUS ROG GD30CI-DB71 is great. Again we’ve come across a few that differ but the number of ports really comes down to personal preference. We get a Headphone jack, Microphone jack, two USB2.0 ports, two USB3.1 Gen 1 ports and a 6-in-1 Card Reader on the front panel. At the back we get 1 Rear Speaker Out 1 Mic-in, 1 Center / Sub-Woofer 1 Front Speaker Out (Line Out), 1 Side Speaker Out 1x Line-in, 1 RJ45 LAN, 1 USB2.0, 4USB3.1 Gen 1 and a modern USB3.1 Gen 2 (Type C) port. Of course, the Video card comes with the standard video output ports which include; one DVI port, three Display ports (Version 1.4) and one HDMI port.

Connectivity on the ASUS ROG GD30CI-DB71 is available through the motherboard’s gigabit Ethernet port. You can add an external or internal Wi-Fi card if you badly need wireless connectivity as well.

Ports aside, the ROG GD30CI is equipped with the bleeding edge tech in terms of gaming performance. At the heart of this is, of course, the Pascal-based NVIDIA GeForce GTX1080Ti 11GB graphics card. This is the most powerful NVIDIA GPU to date. Nothing really comes close to this card in terms of performance in conventional AAA gaming, VR and 4K processing. It’s also cheaper than most of its competitors when sold separately. A few Facts and figures about the NVIDIA GTX1080 Ti on this ASUS ROG desktop.

  • 3854 CUDA cores
  • 1.6GHz boost clock
  • Texture units-224
  • 11GB GDDR5 X memory at 11GHz
  • Ansel Technology
  • Very overclockable – (2GHz and beyond)

The NVIDIA GTX1080Ti is coupled with Intel’s Core i7-7700 3.6GHz processor. This has lately become a popular choice of CPU for this configuration and price-point so, no surprise here. It’s a capable, efficient and overclockable chip that gets the job done when it comes to serious gaming at 4k and 1080p resolution. Other essential performance components include; 16GB DDR4 2400MHz RAM, a really fast 256GB SATA SSD coupled 1TB HDD. This storage configuration is really above average as many gamers will agree. You need the fast SSD drive so games load faster, levels switch swiftly and the 1TB HDD provides the space you need to store hefty files like movies, offline games etc.

As expected, most games run really smooth on the ASUS ROG GD30CI-DB71. Demanding titles like Witcher 3 and Battlefield rarely fall below the average 60fps on very high settings at 4K resolution. Frame rates skyrocket above 90fps at 1080p resolution.
