Asus P-Series P2430UA-XH53 Review
The Asus P-Series P2430UA-XH53 is one of the best-selling productivity laptops on Amazon as of mid to late 2017. This is despite its being a bit dated as compared to newer laptops currently in this segment. The price and performance components installed make it a viable affordable choice. That’s most especially for users with moderate computing needs like students and professionals using productivity tools like Office 365. This laptop is powered by a 6th Gen Intel Core i5 Quad-core processor, has 8GB DRR4 RAM and a fast 256GB SSD. DESIGN AND FEATURES
This laptop does not really shine design-wise. It’s housed in a sturdy and very compact plastic chassis. Asus chose to adopt a functional and low profile design aesthetic for the Asus P-Series P2430UA-XH53 putting more emphasis on the overall build quality, portability, and performance.
We really like the rough matte finish on the surfaces on this laptop. It is quite averse to fingerprints. This eliminates the need to walk around with a micro-fiber cloth to wipe off any fingerprints and oil smudges on our laptop.
The plastic chassis suffers from a bit of flex especially the top panel as expected but nothing too alarming as to make the Asus P-Series P2430UA-XH53 feel cheap or fragile. The area below the keyboard is actually quite sturdy making the overall typing experience quite comfortable (more on this later in the Asus P-Series P2430UA-XH53 review)
Weighing just over 4 pounds and measuring 9.5×13.4×0.9 Pounds, the Asus P-Series P2430UA-XH53 is thin and light enough to comfortably lug around in any bag or sleeve (like the Rivand 13 13.3 inch) for day to day use.
Other notable features include the internal speakers that sound pretty decent and can get really loud without distorting the sound. The webcam is nicely positioned at the top meaning the top bezel gets thicker than we would prefer. We also like the positioning of the LED indicators on the left edge of the palm rest making it easy to see what’s going on like when CAPS lock is on or off.
We’ve never had complaints about ASUS keyboards and the one on the Asus P-Series P2430UA-XH53 does its job well too. As is characteristic of Asus keyboards, this laptop features a full-size chiclet style keyboard with well-spaced out individual keys. The key travel is decent and overall, this keyboard feels quite tactile allowing us to achieve typing speeds of over 80WPM. The trackpad performs well too as it feels quite snappy and accurate. It also features Asus smart gesture technology incorporating a number of useful gestures for us. The same can be said about the fingerprint scanner which you can use to log into windows instead of using passwords.
Productivity laptops like the Asus P-Series P2430UA-XH53 tend to come with a matte type HD display using a TN panel. This display type is an affordable choice for non-color intensive applications like productivity, web browsing and light gaming. Asus did not cheap out by using the 14-inch 1366×768 display on the Asus P-Series P2430UA-XH53. That’s because it’s made to be used for such instances.
Our experience using the display on this laptop was quite satisfactory. It does suffer from a bit of color shifting especially while viewing at obtuse angles. The main advantage of this display is the total elimination of glare in brightly lit environments making the Asus P-Series P2430UA-XH53 excellent to use in an open office environment and outdoors. Refresh rates are also great while enjoying a few light games like Minecraft on low settings.
Port selection on the Asus P-Series P2430UA-XH53 is quite impressive as it has 3 USB 3.0 ports,2 USB 2.0 ports, a HDMI port for externals displays, SD card slot, Headphone/Microphone Combo Jack and a gigabit Ethernet port
This laptop has both wired gigabit Ethernet connectivity and wireless 802.11ac.
The processor on this laptop is a Skylake based Intel Core i5 quad-core processor. This is an excellent choice of CPU for this laptop since most applications like office 365, web browsers like Chrome and Firefox require multiple cores to run smoothly side by side in a normal multi-tasking environment. The Asus P-Series P2430UA-XH53 also comes with 8GB of DDR4 physical memory that is upgradeable up to 12 GB. It’s also using an ultra-fast 256GB SSD that showed impressive read and write speeds on Crystal Disk tests.
Asus’s proprietary IceCool cooling technology takes care of thermals effectively on the Asus P-Series P2430UA-XH53 allowing the processor to run smoothly most of the time without throttling. The laptop doesn’t get too hot even when used for long periods to make it uncomfortable- an important factor you should consider when choosing a productivity device.
Our experience running various applications on the Asus P-Series P2430UA-XH53 was really smooth. We had several tabs open on chrome and other documents on office 365 that we installed after upgrading the OS to windows 10. Multi-tasking on this laptop is great thanks to the quad-core Intel processor and adequate physical memory. The SSD also makes file transfers and copying extremely snappy.
Battery life is one of the major selling points for the Asus P-Series P2430UA-XH53. ASUS claims over 18 hours of battery life but we managed to get over 10 hours on intensive usage and about 14 hours on normal usage. The battery is a Lithium-ion 56Whr brick.
The productivity segment in the laptop market place is very competitive. So, there are several devices competing with the Asus P-Series P2430UA-XH53. However, Asus does not disappoint when it comes to making stylish and lightweight laptops and this particular model is a winner. The Quad-core i5 processor, 256GB SSD are great choices for this type of device. And it perfectly addresses our day-to-day productivity requirements.
