DESIGN AND FEATURES
The Asus FX73VE-WH71 is among the better-designed laptops in the 17-Inch high-performance space. A few things about it sell it out as a gaming laptop, but not so much to make it too obvious. It can this fit quite nicely in an office setting.
The top panel is made of aluminum with a brush metal finish that both looks and feels good to the touch, while the bottom is made of sturdy plastic. The top is a fingerprint magnet, which means that frequent cleaning is necessary.
We really loved its design, neither too gaudy nor too slack.
We loved chiclet keys with their red backlight and number pad. Key travel is quite good at 1.8mm giving the keys a very tactile feel. The red back has three levels of brightness and goes goes a long way to make the keys legible in the dark. However, we would prefer the option of selecting between red and white back light. That’s because the red light does not give the keys as much legibility as does white light… but that depends more on individual preference than on objective usability.
Generally speaking, the Asus FX73VE-WH71’s keyboard is as good as it gets. However, the Caps, Num and Scroll keys lack indicator lights to notify the user of their current status, dampening the otherwise perfect keyboard.
The keypad is slightly displaced to the left, which makes it easier to reach, especially for right-handed individuals. It is quite responsive and accurate, along with supporting multi-gesture finger movements and palm muting.
On weight matters, the ASUS FX73VE-WH71 weights 6.6lbs, nothing out of the ordinary for a 17-Inch laptop. However, that does not make it any easier to haul around. So if you are constantly hitting the road, perhaps the 15.6-Inch model may be a better match for you. However, if your movements are limited, perhaps between your car, house, and office, then its weight may not be a major concern.
Man-computer interactions are only possible thanks to the display component in a computer. That’s why the display matters so much in a computer. The Asus FX73VE-WH71 comes with a 17.3-Inch TN display that goes seldom acts like one. TN panels tend to be the weakest in terms of color accuracy and viewing angles, but they have slightly faster pixel response times than the other panel types. IPS panels, on the other hand, tend to have the best color accuracy and viewing angles, but dark areas tend to glow a bit, hurting their contrast. More on displays here.
While the Asus FX73VE-WH71 comes with a TN panel, it is not the run-of-the-mill kind. Manufacturers refer this kind of TN panel as IPS like TN panel. This, of course, is a TN panel on the higher end of the price scale, thus offering better quality. With this display, color reproduction is slightly better and viewing angles are as wide as in most IPS displays (178 degrees horizontal). The display is also very bright, which makes it great for outdoor uses, that in addition to the matte finish that reduces glare to a bare minimum.
The choice of ports in the Asus FX73VE-WH71 is more than sufficient for most user’s needs. It comes with three USB 3.0 ports, one USB3.1 Type C (Gen 1) port, one USB 2.0 port, one Microphone-in jack, one Headphone-out jack, on HDMI port, a mini DisplayPort and an RJ45 jack for LAN insert. It is not very common to find laptops with 5 USB ports, not to mention that the majority are USB 3.0 ports. Further, the HDMI and mini DisplayPort are an excellent choice for video and audio transmission and can do that simultaneously too. VGA and DVI are not welcome here.
Wireless connectivity is via Bluetooth 4.1 and the 802.11ac Wi-Fi.
In addition to the impressive looks and hardy exterior, the Asus FX73VE-WH71 features a powerful set of specs that guarantees far beyond mediocre performance. The heart and bone of this machine is the Intel Core i7-7700HQ processor which boasts a base clock speed of 2.8GHz and can go up to 3.8GHz on demand. This is a high-end processor designed for notebooks and desktop replacement computers and can churn up enough power to handle most modern games. And if it can handle today’s demanding games, you can be sure that less demanding tasks such as word processing, browsing, and light graphics work are but a walkover for it.
RAM and Graphics
In addition to the processor, the Asus FX73VE-WH71 also features 8 GB of RAM and a powerful Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 Ti graphics card with 4 GB of VRAM. The sweet spot for RAM with most application today is 8GB, so we are not at all apprehensive at the provided capacity. If your use ranges from light gaming to office work with some movie watching in between, you will be perfectly alright. But if your demands exceed what the 8GB can supply, you will be happy to know that there is an extra slot cater to your needs. The Asus FX73VE-WH71 comes with two RAM slots, each able to support up to 16GB of DDR4 2400MHz RAM. Find out more about why 8GB RAM is likely all you will need this year right here.
As you might already know, clock speed and VRAM volume are what really matters when we come to graphics cards. Compared to a laptop with integrated graphics, the Asus FX73VE-WH71 is a Goliath on steroids. Most games play comfortably at moderate graphical setting and 1080p resolution, with older titles playing at higher settings with the same resolution. Games such as Player Unknown’s Battleground, League of Legends, Fortnite and Stream play seamlessly at 1080p resolution and low graphical settings. For stronger delivery, we recommend going for a machine with a Nvidia GTX 1060 or 1070 card. It is not possible to upgrade the graphics card considering that it is soldered onto the motherboard.
Finally, the Asus FX73VE-WH71 comes with a 1 TB 7200rpm hard disk drive. Mechanical drives are an ideal choice for large volume storage work but are far slower than solid state drive. If speed is a major concern for you, you may consider the FX503VD-EH73 with a 128GB SSD or the ASUS FX503VD-WH51 with a 1TB Hybrid Drive. Alternatively, you can consider the upgrading the unit with an M.2 SSD to a maximum capacity of 512GB.
Audio and heat management
The Asus FX73VE-WH71 laptop comes with a set of standard dual speakers located on either side of the touchpad facing the user, and sound impressively good. Sound does not get distorted even at high volume levels. Well, audio is often not a big concern for most multi-media user and gamer alike. That’s because most of such users prefer using headphones or external speakers… and we feel the same too.
However, when gaming or when using the machine for very demanding tasks such as gaming, fan noise does pick up quite a bit. But to be fair, this is not out of the ordinary in a gaming laptop where the heat produced is enough to cause a complete meltdown of the system. This challenge can be handled simply by plugging in a headphone set or simply using external speakers.
Heat levels are well controlled even under heavy load.
The battery lasts an average of 3 hours 45 minutes hours on a single charge – which includes watching a movie on Netflix, web browsing, and working on an excel sheet. When it comes to gaming or video rendering, battery life drops down to 2 hours 15 minutes on League of Legends. This, however, may vary from game to game.
The Asus FX73VE-WH71 is, without doubt, an impressive machine owing to its powerful Core i7-7700HQ processor and GTX 1050 graphics card. It features a large 17.3-Inch TN display with IPS like viewing angles and very good color reproduction. In addition to that, the sound quality is excellent – which makes it a good choice for multi-media use. Port selection is more than decent and its keypad is excellent for productivity thanks to its 1.8mm travel, backlighting, number pad and good spacing of keys. However, its massive size and weight make it less friendly for outdoor use.
All the same, the Asus FX73VE-WH71 is an excellent choice for a machine that we feel is well worth its price. However, if cost is a concern for you yet you need performance, you might find the Eluktronics Pro-X a decent alternative.
