DESIGN AND FEATURES

We recently reviewed the 17.3-Inch Asus FX73VE-WH71 which had identical features as our review unit except for a larger screen and a having a mechanical hard drive. As would be expected, the two have an identical chassis, only differing in size and weight. The Asus FX503VD-WH51 weighs only 4.89 lbs, which is super light for a 15.6 Inch gaming laptops with a dedicated graphics card, and only 1-Inch thin. Compared to the MSI GL62M 7REX-1896US at 5.29lbs and the Acer predator Helios 300 at 5.95 lbs, the Asus FX503VD-WH51 is but a featherweight.

15.6-Inch Full HD Matte display on the Asus FX503VD-WH51

Most Asus laptops enjoy a good quality build, more so as you climb the price scale. Similar to the WH71, the WH51 comes with an aluminum top panel with the rest of the machine being plastic. It enjoys a rather simple look, far from pageantry that comes with gaming rigs, which helps blend it in in any environment without having everyone note that it is a gaming laptop.

The Asus FX503VD-WH51 hallmarks a chiclet keyboard that includes a number pad. Once darkness strikes, one has the liberty of turning on the red backlight as well as adjust between the three brightness settings.

Display

Among its best features is a 15.6-Inch Full-HD display with 1920 x 1080 pixels. As would be expected in a gaming laptop, it comes with a TN panel rather than an IPS panel. TN panels are the better choice when it comes to gaming since they offer faster response time, although they suffer from poorer color reproduction and viewing angles compared to IPS displays. However, the Asus FX503VD-WH51 comes with a top of the range TN panel that mimics an IPS panel’s large viewing angle. TN panels typically have a 160-degree horizontal viewing angle, which is far significantly lower than what the Asus FX503VD-WH51 achieves (178 degrees horizontal).

Color reproduction is similarly good at 45% NTSC color gamut, ideal for watching movies and for productivity. On matters productivity, the matte finish goes a long way to make it easier on your eyes when working or playing long in front of the screen. But while color reproduction great, it may not be the ideal choice if your work requires color accuracy. For that, a laptop with an IPS display will be a better option, or perhaps even an external monitor.

CONNECTIVITY

The Asus FX503VD-WH51 comes with a decent port selection. Rather than going with more USB 3.0 ports or even USB 2.0 ports, they went with the superior option, USB 3.1 ports. It has two USB 3.1 ports (Type A), a single USB 2.0 port, an HDMI 1.4 port, a Mini DisplayPort, an RJ45 LAN port, a card reader and headphone/mic combo jack. Wireless connectivity is via Bluetooth 4.1 and the 802.11ac dual-band Wi-Fi protocol.

SYSTEM PERFORMANCE

It is not worth much to have a pretty machine that just can’t deliver, is it? Fortunately, the Asus FX503VD-WH51 definitely does. It features an Intel i5-7300HQ processor, a dedicated Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 graphics card, 8 GB of RAM and a 1TB Hybrid drive.

The Intel Core i5-7300HQ processor offers 4 Physical Cores (4 Logical), initially clocked at 2.5GHz, which may go up to 3.5GHz on TurboBoost. It submits sufficient power for nearly all the tasks you can throw at it. That includes web browsing, light video editing and rendering, video streaming and general media consumption, and some moderate gaming.

Add to that the 2GB Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 graphics card, the Asus FX503VD-WH51 becomes an excellent mid-tier gaming laptop. 4GB VRAM is the sweet spot for 1080p resolution gaming, and as such, most modern games will play best at slightly lower quality and resolution levels. Games such as Call of Duty WWII, Need for Speed 2017 and Fortnite play at 160, 88 and 188 frames per second at a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels (low settings). Higher settings achieve low but playable frame rates.

Plenty of Storage

You might be wondering, what the heck is this FireCuda SSHD? But since you’re smart and know how to use Google, I bet you’ve already figured out that its a hybrid drive that combines the traits of a hard disk drive(HDD) and solid-state drive(SSD) so as to reap the best of both worlds. Good work. Hard disk drives are slower but often have larger capacities while solid-state drives are many times faster but carry more cost per GB.

A hybrid drive combines a small volume of solid-state storage (8GB) with a large capacity hard disk drive (1 TB) to get a drive that’s five times faster than a typical hard disk drive. Files that are needed urgently and quickly are stored in the SSD while those that are less frequently used are stored in the HDD. The result? Faster boot time (boot time is reduced to seconds) and load speeds for games and other applications.

The Asus FX503VD-WH51 handles heat issues quite well thanks to the dual-fan system connected to a pair of heat pipes. Its fan is almost always on but runs silently in the background when you’re not running anything demanding. However, it can ramp up its purr quite a bit when gaming or when running demanding applications such as 3D Video editing on Corel VideoStudio – and get loud enough to be distractive. However, that will less likely be an issue if you have a set of headphones or have an external speaker set.

Battery and Audio

Its battery, on the other hand, is neither too massive nor small (64Whr). For a gaming laptop, this is quite fine considering that a larger battery would mean a heavier machine, and add to that a dedicated graphics card – you would end up with a machine that’s too heavy to consider as mobile. Under day-to-day use such as browsing, watching a movie, working on Excel documents, etc, it will get you by 4 to 5 hours. When gaming, battery life drops down to 2 hours or less depending on your graphical and display brightness settings, as well as how demanding the game you are playing is.

Sound quality is pretty good on this machine, though a little more base would have done it more justice. At 100% volume, no reverberations are noticeable, and its loud enough to fill a small well enough.

CONCLUSION

Not too often do you find a laptop with a hybrid drive. That has often denied many folks who can’t bear the cost that comes with an SSD a chance to have really fast machines. So finding a machine that caters for this category of users is a real plus. And despite the cost advantage that the Asus FX503VD-WH51 offers, it does not compromise on performance.

Bottom line, the Asus FX503VD-WH51 is a great general use and entry-level gaming laptop for buyers on a budget, and we definitely love it. What about you?
