Manufacturers tend to cheap out when it comes to build quality and choice of materials especially with these compact desktop replacement laptops… but Asus chose to house this one in a solid icicle gold metallic frame. The Asus F556UA-AS54 feels luxurious and expensive despite the fact that it’s actually an inexpensive mid-tier device meant to be used as a daily driver. The metallic chassis makes it a bit bulky for our taste but it really elevates the Asus F556UA-AS54 Laptop a class higher than close rivals like the Hp 15 series of laptops. The gold finish is sure to attract a lot of attention as well since not many laptops in this price range look this epic. As usual Asus observed a strict symmetrical pattern in the way various components are arranged on the exterior therefore giving the Asus F556UA-AS54 a premium and aesthetic look.Measuring just 15 x 1 x 10.1 inches, the Asus F556UA-AS54 Laptop is slim and compact therefore easy to slide into any average sized Laptop sleeve or backpack. As mentioned before, the weight is a bit of an issue (for me) but this is an easy compromise considering the fact that it’s brought about by the metallic chassis.

The Asus F556UA-AS54 Laptop has a 15.6-Inch Full-HD matte display that is great for productivity as it’s easy on the eyes. The color reproduction, brightness and contrast is great though the colors may not be as bright and vivid as those you find in high end IPS panels. However, Asus does include its proprietary Asus splendid technology to improve color accuracy but we did still notice some color inaccuracies especially the blues which looked a bit too saturated. As expected from A TN panel viewing angles aren’t that great as tilting the screen above 45 degrees results in color shifting and stuff looking a bit washed out. That said, this display is great for productivity and gaming as it has great refresh rates. It’s also great for outdoor usage as it does not suffer from glare like IPS based panels.

Input devices

The keyboard on the Asus f556ua-as54 is not bad, it feels quite tactile and easy to type on. Keys are well labelled and nicely spaced but unfortunately, it lacks backlighting… This was kind of a bummer for us but it’s expected for a laptop at this price point as even close competitors like the HP 15-ay011nr notebook | Amazon we recently reviewed here also lacks key backlighting. The touchpad is quite snappy and supports a number of multi-touch gestures which is great. You may not get the kind of experience you get from Apple touchpads but this one is real close. Apple touchpads have always been ahead of windows based ones, especially windows touchpads using synaptic drivers. This one works great with the pre-installed Windows 10, we did not experience any lagging or mis-clicks at all.

As mentioned in the beginning, the Asus F556UA-AS54 comes with a nice selection of ports. We particularly like the fact that this laptop does include a modern type C port whose applications are endless. This also future proofs the Asus F556UA-AS54 as modern devices can interface with it without the need for dongles. There is one USB 2.0 port, one USB 3.0 port and one USB C port as well as an audio/mic combo jack and SD card slot. For display output (in case you want to hook up an external monitor to the Asus F556UA-AS54) you have a choice of either using the HDMI port or VGA port both which are also present on the Asus F556UA-AS54.

For network and Internet connectivity, the Asus F556UA-AS54 has inbuilt 802.11ac Wi-Fi connectivity and Bluetooth 4.1.

Performance on the Asus F556UA-AS54 is very snappy and smooth thanks to the 6th Gen Intel i5-6200U processor with a 2.3 GHz base clock speed and a Turbo clock of 2.8 GHz. It also has 8GB of physical memory (RAM) and an ultra-fast 256 GB SSD.

Applications like office 365 and Chrome with several tabs open run smoothly without hanging at all times as thermal management is also well taken care of in the Asus F556UA-AS54. Asus uses a proprietary cooling design codenamed ASUS IceCool Technology that effectively manages temperatures keeping CPU thermal throttling on the minimum.Though this laptop is not meant for serious gaming, it’s also worth mentioning that it does have an Intel HD Graphics 520 Integrated card that can allow decent gaming for light titles like Minecraft, League of Legends and older titles like Age of empires and GTA vice city. These light games can actually be played at very high frame rates thanks and no noticeable lag.

Battery life

Battery life on the Asus F556UA-AS54 is decent as we were able to squeeze up to 6 hours of average usage. Frugal users with modest performance and brightness requirements can actually get up to 8 hours of use. The 38 Whr polymer battery is however not readily user removable. You’ll have to pop some screw at the bottom to get to the battery, which shouldn’t be too hard if have a little experience with screwdrivers.

ASUS F556UA-AS54 Review

The Asus F556UA-AS54 is a beautifully designed mid-tier laptop that packs enough power to get you through your day to day computing tasks. Its icicle gold metallic finish puts it above its close competitors especially the Hp 15 series like the HP 15-ay011nr | Amazon we reviewed recently. The pricing on Amazon is also quite competitive, making it a pocket friendly purchase for users with moderate computing needs.
