DESIGN AND FEATURES
Chromebooks are known and liked for the lightweight and barebones designs that favor portability. The Acer Chromebook CB3-131-C3SZ features a uniquely designed body made of plastic that is sure to attract attention. Our review model came in a beautiful white color that really stood out especially when placed on dark surfaces.
This Chromebook is also insanely thin as it’s fitted into a slim 11.6-inch frame. We found it weird carrying it around in a backpack as you can actually almost always forget that you are carrying a laptop. A small sleeve like the Amazon basics 11.6 laptop sleeve we got on Amazon for our laptop is a great way to lug this laptop around in.
The surfaces on the Acer Chromebook CB3-131-C3SZ are finished in a rough and surprisingly grippy design that Acer refers to as “Acer Nano-imprint patterning technology”. This not only makes the Chromebook nice to touch and hold but also significantly improves its visual appeal. This is one sexy looking bad boy from Acer.
The keyboard carries on the sleek design and features with smooth black keys with white typography that really contrast well with the rest of the white surfaces on the Acer Chromebook CB3-131-C3SZ.
The two hinges on this Chromebook are also beautifully individualized with a shiny silver finish that gives the Acer Chromebook CB3-131-C3SZ a premium look.
The down firing internals speakers also sound really nice especially when the Acer Chromebook CB3-131-C3SZ is placed on a nice flat surface.
One of the most appealing features on the Acer Chromebook CB3-131-C3SZ is the display. This Chromebook comes with a beautiful 11.6 HD IPS LED-backlit display. Color reproduction on this panel is incredible. Images and HD movies look super-sharp and vivid as well as bright and rich in color. Viewing angles are also excellent as this is a high end IPS panel so is contrast and overall brightness.
We really enjoyed watching movies and streaming HD content on YouTube and Netflix on the Acer Chromebook CB3-131-C3SZ thanks to the high end display. Browsing websites and playing web based games like Angry birds on this HD display is a rewarding and entertaining experience.
The color accuracy also means we can comfortably edit images using online tools like Adobe CC on the Acer Chromebook CB3-131-C3SZ.
The keyboard on this Chromebook is beautifully designed as mentioned earlier but besides that, it’s also comfortable to type on as the keys have a decent travel and require the soft touch that we’ve become accustomed to in modern laptops. However, this is not a full sized keyboard so it takes some getting used to if you have never used these small laptops before. Netbooks were terrible and most people hated them because of their tiny and crowded keyboards but modern Chromebook like the Acer Chromebook CB3-131-C3SZ eliminated that shortcoming by having adequately spaced out keys and ergonomically designed keyboards.
The trackpad on this Chromebook is also quite impressive. We did not experience any noticeable lags and miss-clicks while using. It and it does support a number of chrome and browsers specific gestures like three finger scrolling too.
We did not really expect port selection on this Chromebook to be impressive as most of our data is meant to cloud based and internal memory is quite meagre. That said, the Acer Chromebook CB3-131-C3SZ has 1 USB 3.0 port,1 USB 2.0 port and a HDMI out port enabling us to connect an external display.
As you’ve probably guessed by now, the Acer Chromebook CB3-131-C3SZ handles connectivity though Wi-Fi. This laptop has an internal 802.11ac Wi-Fi card that also supports the new MIMO technology for better and more stable wireless connectivity. MIMO is a new wireless technology that allows modern routers to handle multiple devices on a wireless network more efficiently leading to stable and reliable connectivity across all devices.
The processor on this chromebook is an Intel Celeron N2840.This CPU is a popular choice for lightweight laptops like the Acer Chromebook CB3-131-C3SZ due to its low power and thermal performance. RAM on our review model is only 2GB DDR3L and internal storage is a meagre 16 GB solid state drive. We however like the fact that this laptop is using a solid state drive as most laptops in this segment tend to come with slow Emmc drives.
Performance on this Chromebook is quite impressive most of the time as most chrome apps are optimized for this type of device. We were able to comfortably run various web apps like ZOHo docs, Google docs and Adobe cc and many others without a hitch. We however noticed a bit of lagging and throttling when having several tabs open on chrome and streaming HD content on YouTube so keep that in mind and avoid having hundreds of tabs open at the same time.
Most Chromebook tend to shine when it comes to battery life as most of the components like the CPU require low power and there are no power hogging fans.
The Acer Chromebook CB3-131-C3SZ delivers over 7 hours of battery life on normal usage and charges quickly too.
Acer Chromebook CB3-131-C3SZ Review
The Acer Chromebook CB3-131-C3SZ is a great budget laptop that not only looks sleek and stylish but also has the performance to match. It’s great for cloud based work, entertainment and school work.
If you are not a fan of the chrome OS, you can also check out similarly priced laptops like the Aspire 1 – A114-31-C4HH that is running windows 10 as well as the Samsung Chromebook 3. We however prefer the Acer Chromebook CB3-131-C3SZ since it has better looks as compared to the other two.
