DESIGN AND FEATURES
White is a color synonymous with serenity and peace. Perhaps that was what the makers of the Acer Chromebook 15 CB5-571-C4G4 wanted to bring out. Just as rare as true peace and serenity are, so is a 15.6 Inch display on a Chromebook. Thanks to its large display, the Acer CB5-571-C4G4 achieves a size footprint that’s hard to find in this category of laptops. It measures 9.65 x 15.08 x 0.97 inches and weights slightly less than 5 lbs, just within acceptable limits for notebooks of a similar size. Today, its impressive to note that there are gaming laptops that weigh less than 5 lbs yet can shove out massive amounts of compute power. A good example is the Eluktronics Pro-X P957HR that we recently reviewed.
The whole body of the Acer Chromebook 15 CB5-571-C4G4 is made of white plastic that feels both strong and durable. Nothing about its exterior feels cheep as would be expected at this price point. As a matter of fact, a Windows PC of the same price will likely feel cheaper and have far less to offer than would this Chromebook.
As you open the lid, you can’t help but notice how stout the hinges feel. The lid opens up to the degree of an ordinary clamshell laptop, so don’t expect any Yoga here. The bezel around the display is of ordinary dimension, neither too thick or thin, with the top bezel housing a 720p webcam and built in microphone. We found the picture quality to be good enough, sufficient for Skype and other chat services.
The speakers are located on either side of the keyboard, which means less space was available for a larger keypad as would be expected for a laptop this size. However, the compromise paid off richly in good quality sound as shall be discussed later. The keys are moreover well spaced and comfortable to type on. No keyboard back lighting is offered with this model. The centrally located touchpad is larger than is in the 13 Inch Chromebook version – which makes it far easier to use. It is equally responsive and reliable.
The Acer Chromebook 15 CB5-571-C4G4’s display is without doubt its main attraction. Up from the 1366 x 768p displays that are often the norm with Chromebooks, the 15.6 inch Full-HD display simply looks glorious in comparison. Viewing angles are wide thanks to the IPS panel the display comes in, which is a definite leap from the TN panels in other Chromebooks. Color reproduction is quite good also – appearing vibrant and real – which makes for an excellent viewing experience especially when watching videos. This along with the good speakers make the Acer CB5-571-C4G4 an excellent multimedia device. Further, the matte finish goes a long way to deter glare thus making it easier on the eyes over long reading escapades. Finally, the screen is bright enough for even outdoor use though not under direct sunlight.
For a computer this size, we expected a little more than what we found. The right side houses a security lock slot, a single USB 2.0 port, and an SD-card reader supporting cards up to 128 GB in size! Unfortunately, it only supports SD format. The left side hosts a full size HDMI port, a single USB 3.0 port and a headphone jack.
Despite the meager port selection, we have to face the fact that this is a Chromebooks. As such, price considerations play a major role in the choice of specs. Adding more ports would drive its price higher – which in our estimate would place it at a disadvantage competition-wise with other OEM manufacturers. All the same, it would have been nice to have a DisplayPort and at least one USB port (either a USB 3.0 or USB 3.1).
On wireless connectivity, the Acer Chromebook 15 CB5-571-C4G4 comes with the 802.11ac Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0. Wi-Fi connection is strong and does not drop off, and the range is quite good also.
The Acer Chromebook 15 CB5-571-C4G4 come with an Intel Celeron 3205U processor. It has two physical cores (2 threads) clocked at 1.50GHz but does not utilize Intel’s HyperThreading and Turbo Boost technologies that we find in more advanced processors today. Finally, it integrates the Intel HD Graphics and has combined TDP of 15W. Away with the technical stuff. Let’s see what it can do for you.
Chromebooks run web based application that do not require much processing power as compared to what is needed to running software on a Windows PC. Thanks to that, a modest processor like the Celeron 3205U is more than enough to handle your daily computing needs. It can manage an excess of 15 Chrome tabs while playing music on YouTube on two of the tabs without loosing responsiveness too considerably. In addition to that, the processor and integrated graphics can support up to three external displays, though we did not get to test this.
Believe it or not, Chrome tabs can be really heavy on RAM, especially when you have multiple videos playing simultaneously. The Acer Chromebook 15 CB5-571-C4G4 comes with 4 Gigs of DDR3L RAM, which is quite sufficient for a Chromebook when in the hands of a ordinary user. Supers users, better stick with gaming laptops – there’s nothing here for you, sorry.
For internal storage, our version came with a 16GB flash memory solid state drive. Considering that the Chromebooks are web based and that most files can be stored in cloud drives such as Google Drive, 16GB is more than sufficient. However, there is a 32 GB version available at Amazon for those who need to store lots of files off-line. Another available option is swapping the 16GB mSATA drive with a larger capacity drive, that’s of course if you mind the available space and know your way around with screw drivers. The good new is that the drive is easily accessible after you remove the back cover. Thanks to the flash drive, boot time is brought down to a mere 6 seconds while it only require 5 seconds to wake from sleep.
The Acer Chromebook 15 CB5-571-C4G4 comes with a integrated 4-cell 3270 mAh Li-ion battery. We were able to get right around 7 hours of battery life with moderately light web browsing, word processing and YouTube videos. Compared to the Dell Chromebook 11 (11 hours) and the Lenovo ThinkPad 13 (9 hours), we thought this to be quite impressive considering that has a 15.6 inch display. The integrated battery can be easily replaced by simply unscrewing the screws at the bottom of the machine.
Sound quality is quite decent thanks to the the upward firing dual speakers. Their positioning meant a compromise on the size of the keypad, which was maintained as is in the Chromebook 13. However, this compromise was richly repaid with clarity and generally good quality sound. Seldom will you find such sound in a Chromebook, you can count on that.
The Acer Chromebook 15 CB5-571-C4G4 is one Chromebook that you don’t see every day. Among the things we found impressive is its 15.6 inch IPS display. Viewing angles are very wide and images appear bright and in inviting compared to what you find in 720p TN displays as witnessed in most Chromebooks. In addition to that, we loved the sound quality along with its long battery life. However, its white exterior requires careful maintenance to keep dirt away, and its size may not exactly work for everyone. All in all, we loved the Acer CB5-571-C4G4 and would gladly recommend it to anyone whose looking for a large Chromebook that can serve as a daily driver.
