DESIGN AND FEATURES

Do looks matter? Well, of course they do… at least when it comes to desktop PCs. It is not difficult to categorize where the Acer Aspire GX-785-UR18 falls by a simple glance. The red V right below the DVD tray and the red vents on the side make it clear that its got some gaming blood flowing through its veins – or rather, wires. However, the rest of its exterior is rather plain and basic, resonant with the office setting. Thanks to this crossbreed look, the Acer Aspire GX-785-UR18 can fit anywhere, whether in the office setting or at home on your living room or work desk without standing out too prominently.

It has a plastic front, while the rest of its body is made of metal. The 18lb tower is 18 inches high, thus requiring some good space on your work desk especially when considering that you need a monitor too. If size is a major consideration for you, then you might find the Lenovo Ideacenter Y710 cube a decent alternative. It has similar features and costs almost the same as our review machine.

In the package is also a mouse and keyboard. Well, there’s nothing much to write about these considering that they are stock units. While they are not exactly the most premium peripherals,  they are sufficient for all your basic needs, though an upgrade will be a good idea in the future.

The Acer Aspire GX-785-UR18 shares exactly the same exterior and specifications with the Acer Aspire GX-785-UR19. The only difference is that the latter comes with a 256GB PCle solid state drive in addition to the 1 TB hard disk drive.

CONNECTIVITY

The Acer GX-785-UR18 comes with a decent port selection, though suffering a minor but notable setback. Desktop PCs in this category often come with at least three visual output ports –  DVI, HDMI and DisplayPort. This particular unit comes with a HDMI port and a DisplayPort only. That posses a challenge for multiple head setups where one has to purchase a DisplayPort hub to accommodate any extra display.

Other than that, the Acer Aspire GX-785-UR18 has a sufficient supply of ports that will meet all your needs. These include two USB 2.0 ports for low speed peripheral connections, along with six USB 3.0 port for fast data transfer. No USB 3.1 ports are included.

Also included is a SD-card reader which supports six formats, plus an LAN port (RJ-45).

SYSTEM PERFORMANCE

The Acer Aspire GX-785-UR19 and Acer Aspire GX-785-UR18 alike run on an Intel Core i7-7700 Quad core processor. This is a very high end processor with 8MB of L3 Cache, and is based on Intel’s 14nm Kaby Lake microarchitecture. It has a base clock speed of 3.6GHz and can turbo up to 4.2 GHz on demand through the Turbo Boost feature. Among its notable feature include Virtualization, Hyper Threading and Turbo Boost 2.0. Overclocking is not possible with this processor since its multiplier in not unlocked.

Coupled to this powerful processor is the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 Graphics card with 3GB of GDDR5 video memory. You might be wondering why this card has 3 Gigs of VRam while there is a version with 6 Gig. Well, the 6GB version is the founders version that saw the entry of the Pascal architecture chips. NVidia claims that the reduction in VRam will account for a deficit of only 5% from the founders version. The bottom line is that the 3GB NVIDIA GeForece GTX 1060 has enough of everything to handle 1080p gameplay. The only catch is that you stay away from Multisample anti-aliasing (MSAA), extreme resolution texture options as well as high quality high definition texture packs (HQ/HD).

Below are some benchmarks with a 1080p and 1440p display.

Benchmarks

 1920×1080 (1080p)  2560×1440 (1440p)
Assassin’s Creed Unity, Ultra High, FXAA 55.2 32.4
Ashes of the Singularity, Extreme, 0x MSAA, DX12 46.8 41.3
Crysis 3, Very High, SMAA T2x 74.8 45.6
The Division, Ultra, SMAA 54.3 57
Far Cry Primal, Ultra, SMAA 63.1 42.7
The Witcher 3, Ultra, Post AA, No HairWorks 64.7 45.4

The Acer GX-785-UR18 comes with 16 GB of RAM, which for more than enough for both general use and gaming. With this amount of RAM, you can open and excess of 170 Google Chrome tabs as well as run significantly heavy software without breaking a sweat. Resolution can go as high as a crisp 4k and programs running through your browser will have no issues running. Audio quality is also clean with no odd reverberations. If you plan to use the Acer Aspire GX-785-UR18 as a work station, depending on your use, you might need to upgrade your RAM to accommodate the software you run. The good thing is that you have the option of upgrading RAM to a maximum of 64GB when need arises. Find how much RAM you need in 2018 right here.

When it comes to internal storage, the Acer Aspire GX-785-UR18 makes an good argument in its own defense. It comes with a 1TB (7200RPM) hard disk drive but lacks a solid state drive. It’s sibling, the Acer Aspire GX-785-UR19 on the other hand comes with both a 1TB HDD plus a 256 GB PCle solid state drive for around $140 extra. Thanks to the SSD, boot time takes less time and while programs load super fast. That is the edge the latter has over our review machine. However, the availability of a PCI Express X16 slot on the motherboard makes it possible to add an extra SSD in the future.

The system is very silent even when performing demanding tasks such as gaming with ultra settings, with only the constant fan hum in the background.

CONCLUSION

When we weigh the pros against the cons when considering the Acer Aspire GX-785-UR18, we are must conclude that it is quite a decent machine to say the least. Its powerful processor, graphics and sufficient RAM place it among the top picks for anyone who is in search of a productivity machine / gaming rig. On the contrary, its shortfall on matters port selection makes it necessary for a user to purchase a hub, which means s/he may have to spend more depending on his/her needs. All-in-all, we find the Acer Aspire GX-785-UR18 an excellent choice of a machine. High five from our side.

Alternatives to this PC include the CyberPowerPC Gamer Xtreme GXIVR8020A4 which is a cheaper option to the Acer Aspire GX-785-UR18 as long as one is willing to surrender the SSD and 8 Gigs of RAM. Another excellent choice is the Acer Aspire TC-780-UR12, especially if you do not need dedicated graphics but still require a powerful machine out of the box.
