DESIGN AND FEATURES
Asus endowed the Acer Aspire E 15 E5-574G-54Y2 with a slightly new twist; the design features a polished metal body on the rear. It’s not your ordinary lid design though, it’s made of a cross-hatched pattern, a little rough to aid with grip but generally decent. The palm rest is smooth and polished like many of the Acer Aspire E15 models. We also know of other models within the E15 that share a similar look to the Acer Aspire E 15 E5-574G-54Y2 but have the internals slightly decorated. A good example would be the sister Acer Aspire E 15 E5-574G-52QU which enjoys a white polished interior with a black lid, and the Acer Aspire E15 E5-574G-77RN with maroon(or brown) interior
We love the display as it is a wide 15.6 inches which is good screen estate for movies and working with. The screen is also LED backlit and enjoys LCD Display Technology. The screen has a 16:9 aspect ratio for its 1920 x 1080 resolution display, which means watching 1080p video and streaming YouTube will always be a delight. As for brightness, Asus didn’t really do much for me here; the laptop only has 220 nits of brightness which is really low and makes working under the sun or brightly lit rooms slightly harder thanks to the reflections.
Moving on to measurements, Acer Aspire E 15 E5-574G-54Y2 is 1.15 x 15.02 x 10.08 inches, 5.29 lbs which is similar to the Acer Aspire E5-575G-53VG Laptop measuring 10.2 x 15.02 x 1.19 inches, 5.27 lbs, the Acer Aspire E5-573G-52G3 measuring 10.08 x 15.02 x 1.15 inches, 5.29 lbs and the New Acer Laptop Aspire E 15 E5-575G-52RJ measuring 10.08 x 15.02 x 1.15 inches, 5.29 lbs.
The port selection of the Acer is ideal and respectable which makes this notebook pretty complete in this department. We’ve got a standard Bluetooth 4.0, 3 USB ports (2 USB 3.0), an Ethernet port, 802.11ac WiFi, an HDMI port for connection to external monitors, SD card reader and finally audio ports.
On performance spheres the Acer Aspire E 15 E5-574G-54Y2 doesn’t fall back either. It has a myriad of features that boost its performance considerably making it a worthwhile laptop to look at. First, it has a processor with ordinary clock speeds of 2.30 GHz but with a maximum Turbo Speed of 2.80 GHz. Furthermore, the processor is Dual-core (2 Core) with L3 Cache size of 3 MB to handle repetitive work. The Operating System is Windows 10 Home and the system allows up to 64-bit Processing.
Acer Aspire E 15 E5-574G-54Y2 comes with 8 GB DDR3 SDRAM which is enough for home, office and generally light use. But can be upgraded to 16GB for extra performance if you’re a techie and need better clock speeds. We ran a couple of tabs open streaming YouTube videos to test the RAM capacity and it ran smoothly only folding at the 9th tab. So, 8GB is quite okay for moderate laptop users.
Plenty of HDD but lacks SSD
On storage grounds, we a had a ball downloading every funny clip on YouTube and still couldn’t exhaust the 1 TB space. If everything else fails, this should be a sole reason to buy this laptop. And we certainly believe this is one of Acer’s selling point for this notebook. If you’re big on speed, this won’t exactly make you happy; perhaps SSD storage would do well for you. The Acer Aspire E5-575G-53VG beats it here as it comes with 256 SSD storage, which means better boot time and faster clock speed.
Graphics and gaming
We know every gamer out there desires a laptop they can rely on for gaming; one that they especially had no part in assembling. So this laptop must be up to par with the expectation. The Acer Aspire E5-574G-54Y2 comes with a GeForce 940M Graphics card with a memory capacity of up to 2 GB Graphics Memory. It based on Nvidia’s Maxwell architecture which helps beyond gaming; it also allows accelerate photo and video-editing application.
As for gaming, it allows many games of 2014/2015 to play fluently in WXGA resolution (1366 x 768) and medium detail settings. We managed to play Storm, Icewind Dale (Enhanced Edition) and Marvel Heroes at reasonable frame rates, at least above 30 fps; which is a similar result with the Acer Aspire E 15 E5-575G-52RJ laptop we reviewed recently. Grand Theft Auto registered 56 fps.
As far as battery is concerned, Acer promises that the 4 cell battery delivers 6 hours of life, but we had to check it out ourselves on our battery test. (The battery test involves web surfing on Wi-Fi). And the results; a mere 4 hours 47 minutes which is on the fair side considering this is a 15-inch laptop that has full HD.
The keyboard on the Acer Aspire E 15 E5-574G-54Y2 is pretty respectable; it is a standard chiclet keyboard that’s average in look and feel. It is sturdy but the design seems a little cheap at times, which is expected because after all, it is a mid-ranged laptop keyboard; nowhere close to an Apple MacBook Air. And you wouldn’t expect much from a laptop priced as it is… you get what you buy! Either way, it’s nothing you can’t get used to. It only is a problem if you’ve owned a fancy laptop before, but if not, you shouldn’t worry at all. You will be fine.
I managed to get 78 words per second on the typing test which a number of mistakes. But after trying a couple of more times, it drastically improved to 98 wpm. So, in conclusion, hang in there, it only has a short learning curve.

For the final piece of the puzzle we have to break it down for you. So, do I think Acer Aspire E 15 E5-574G-54Y2 is worth buying let alone recommending? Well yes. To put it in a few simple words, it has a feature-packed system most of which are average (besides the screen size); from the display, processor, and battery. It isn’t designed for avid gamers too so that isn’t the reason either.
However, it was built particularly to accommodate most sort of users; home/office use, a little gaming on the side and web surfing. It can accommodate some lightweight video editing too if that’s your industry, and work with students willing to buy a laptop under budget. So, it while we recommend it for simple and not-so-demanding ones, our Editors choice still stands for the Acer Aspire E5-575G-53VG Laptop which in comparison still reigns as a more versatile contender in this arena.
