If your computing needs are modest, budget is tight and you’re simply looking to get hooked up with a low budget desktop, the Acer Aspire ATC-280-UR11 Desktop Computer might be a good option for you in the myriad of choices today. About three years ago, finding a low cost desktop was a hassle and best features they came with was Windows 8.1 (was great at the time). Now, with the forward march of technology you can find fully fledged desktops for as low as $200. But for this article, let’s stick to the Acer Aspire ATC-280-UR11 Desktop PC and other desktops running on advanced systems; I mean Windows 10, ARM and Intel processors and large storage.

  • Great storage- 1TB HDD
  • Fast quad-core processor with 3.5GHz with Turbo boost of 3.9GHz
  • Reasonably priced
  • Simple and Space saving design
  • Offers upgradable potential

  • The 300-watt power supply limits upgrades.

There are plenty of desktops that can be bought for less than $500 and still guarantee capacity to venture into Facebook and Pinterest for such addicts, college students, and general users, but the Acer Aspire ATC-280-UR11 Desktop See at Amazon still dazzles as one of the few favorites in that list. In addition to being budget-friendly, it also comes with a simple modest design with a small form factor (SFF).

Besides from offering raw computing power, the Acer Aspire ATC-280-UR11 Desktop PC comes with a diminutive chassis built for the simple at heart. The matte-black chassis has a glossy black finish which gives the desktop a simple decent look.

Some might argue that it looks a little traditional, but what I’m sure of is that it would blend well in an office with other desktops. In terms of looks and design, it has similarities with its sister the Acer Aspire ATC-780-UR61 and the Acer Aspire ATC-780-AMZi5 See at Amazon we’ll touch on later on.

On size matters, the Acer Aspire ATC-280-UR11 Desktop measures 6.89 x 17.43 x 15.67 inches which is pretty similar to our Editor’s choice; the Acer Aspire ATC-780-AMZi5( 6.89 x 17.43 x 15.67 inches, 18.43 lbs).

At the top of the gently curved chassis is the 8X DVD-SuperMulti Drive to sort all your DVD related needs. There is also an SD media card reader, Headphone and mic combo jack. Additionally, the Acer Aspire ATC-280-UR11 features a great selection of ports; in total eight. There are a total of 4 x USB 2.0 ports, and 4 x USB 3.0 ports and the back panel features HDMI (4K) output with HDCP support and VGA to connect your monitors too. Other additional connectivity includes an 802.11ac wireless (for faster internet connection and wider coverage), Bluetooth 4.0 LE and Gigabit Ethernet.

The thermal design is built to withstand 65 watts which is normal for a premium desktop PC (PSU wattage is 300W). The only issue is that the 300Watts isn’t enough for all major upgrades which need slightly more power to run.

Just as the exterior is simple, so is the interior. The build quality of the Aspire ATC-280-UR11 Desktop isn’t groundbreaking, but at least it leaves ample room for expansion. It features an AMD A10-7800 APU processor with 3.5GHz clock speed and 3.9GHz turbo boost.

In a larger scale, these specs are nothing close to outstanding, but they serve their purpose well, especially for a simple browsing and office-related needs. Further still, compared to other processors out there, the performance from this AMD chip is in a level playing ground as the Intel Core i3 processors (4th generation kind).

On the CPU Mark score, the chip score approx 5100 which is on the lower side; that for most parts cancels it out of a diehard gamer’s scope. In comparison, it performs almost similarly to the Dell Inspiron Small Desktop 3000 series See at Amazon but way lower than the Acer Aspire ATC-780-AMZi5 See at Amazon (has approx 6520 CPU mark average). The processor isn’t Hyper-threaded as it comes with 4 cores to work with the 4 threads already placed in parallel.

Plenty of memory

The Aspire features 12GB memory which is great for day to day web browsing and 2133MHz for the ease of multitasking while at it. The memory occupies both slots; one holds the 8GB and the other slot the 4GB. In whole, the system supports up to 32GB with two additional slots available to use.

As for storage, the Acer Aspire ATC-280-UR11 Desktop comes with ample 2TB SATA HDD storage with 5400 RPM. This isn’t exactly the fastest system and perhaps 7200 RPM would have done it proud. Also, SSD would have been great here as well to help with boot time. Fortunately, there is a 3.5-inch bay included should you need to add some storage room to cover your growing storage needs.

Modest Gaming Prowess

For all the gamers out there, the Acer Aspire ATC-280-UR11 desktop See at Amazon comes adorned with AMD Radeon R7 Kaveri graphics that offers 512 GCN shaders. Ideally, this GPU performs almost similar to GeForce GT 720M or HD Graphics 5500 which means it can play some games. Accordingly, it can play 2014 games and some 2015 titles on 1024 x 768 resolution or 1368 x 768 resolution.

However, we tried some 2017 titles to take it through its paces; Resident Evil 7 played on 1020 x 1080 resolution resulted in 20.9 fps, our favorite Watch Dogs 2 managed 17.8 fps on low settings (1280 x 720) and finally, Battlefield 1 (1280 x 720) got 13.9 fps.

In general, it will give an average gaming performance, on top of handling other plugged in systems. Acer supplies a mouse and keyboard at no extra cost, but you will have to get your own monitor to complete the package. The system supports up to 4096 x 2160 @ 30 Hz through the HDMI and 1920 x 1200 @ 60 Hz through the VGA port.

The Acer Aspire ATC-280-UR11 Warranty cover lasts for 12 months for labor and parts. You can reach the manufacturer on a toll-free customer and tech support number should any other problem arise.

From the specs, the Acer Aspire ATC-280-UR11 desktop See at Amazon certainly isn’t a powerhouse like the Acer Predator G1-710-70001 or the HP Elite Slice, but it can hold its own weight. It features decent specs that help deliver computing needs some mobile devices, tablets, and laptops can’t fulfill. The quad-core processor, 12GB RAM, and ample (2TB) storage are a great blend for home/office and student use.

And should you need to game, the graphics provide excellent performance for smaller titles. While the Acer Aspire (ATC-780-AMZi5) See at Amazon remains our Editors choice for budget desktops, we recommend the Acer Aspire ATC-280-UR11 desktop if it is within your budget.
