The 2017 MSI Trident 3 VR7RC-018US is among the new releases by MSI; introduced during CES 2017 earlier this year. It follows suit as a derivative of Trident 3 series of desktops running on Windows 10 operating system. We loved it because of its svelte size, which ideally is smaller than the Xbox one and still is able to deliver good configuration for gaming needs of Core i5 and Core i7 Kabylake CPUs. Moreover you can upgrade as far as you please, I mean CPU, SSD, HDD and GPU, or just simply RAM.

- The 2017 MSI Trident 3 VR7RC-018US Check at Amazon is an extremely compact desktop that fits the bill for users with limited space and those seeking performance and portability in a desktop. This desktop redefines the size of gaming desktops and brags of flawless ultra 4K resolution, great port selection, feature packed system that meets avid gamers’ needs. We recommend it for above all for budget gaming users. The downside is that opening the hood/cover voids your warranty.
DESIGN AND FEATURES
The 2017 MSI Trident 3 VR7RC-018US is an admirable small footprint desktop made of black and gray plastic. The mixture in color gives it an impressive flair, especially when the red RGB lighting comes on during gaming. I must admit, while it is attractive, the 2017 MSI Aegis 3 VR7RD-013US Gaming Desktop and MSI Computer AEGIS-085US Gaming Desktop offer a more gamer-centric appeal. Even so, that still isn’t a deal breaker if you’re looking for raw power and performance in a small solemn pack. The beauty of the design is that you can have it either standing up or lying flat on the surface; whichever suits your needs and space. Either way, the ports are very accessible whichever orientation you go. It has rubber feet should you prefer to have it stand horizontally.
On dimensions matters, the 2017 MSI Trident 3 VR7RC-018US measures 9.15 x 13.93 x 2.83 inches(smaller than the Xbox one), 6.99 lbs which beats other desktops in its zone fair and square. The 2017 MSI Aegis 3 VR7RD-013US Gaming Desktop is heavier measuring 6.68 x 17.05 x 14.81 inches, 18.94 lbs and the MSI Nightblade MIB-246US Gaming Desktop which measures 15 x 15 x 15 inches and weighs 21.25 lbs. So far, the only desktop among many that comes close to this size is the Asus G20CB-DH73-GTX1080 Gaming Desktop which is smaller is dimensions measuring 4.1 x 14.1 x 13.4 inches but fails in the weight category because of its 14.1 lbs weight.
We loved the mystic lighting of the Trident 3 desktop. The top right edge has a triangular RGB light that allows array LED light to shine through it. The color is customizable through the MSI software and you can make the device look like it’s on fire or on ice through the palette of colors available. The color palette also offers different modes to choose from; breathe, gradient, Gaming and Music modes.
MSI brags of having the desktop built in an extra-compact 4.72-liter case; high quality and durable with Military Class 5 grade components. What we loved most was the vented cutout lets you see the fans in action – Speaking of which, the cooling fans were noticeably quiet as well. I played the Grand Theft Auto for an hour while testing the graphics and didn’t hear the fan blades beat the air as is usual for some desktops – that was of course impressive.
A neat touch that gives it a premium product feel. I also noticed it ideally is an exclusive cooling system, built and running on the Silent storm cooling 2 technology that is designed to keep the processor cool, increase airflow and decrease sound. Ultimately, that helps you to keep playing and even hear music and sounds comfortably when gaming. It works like a charm!
The Trident 3 boasts of a rich port selection and this is probably another selling point for the desktop as well. In total, the number of HDMI ports is 4 and the USB ports 8, including the USB Type –C and USB 3.0 ports. It also has one DisplayPort and one DVI port.
To be specific, the front side houses one HDMI port, headphone/microphone jack, a USB-C port, 2 USB 3.1 Type A ports (one with Super Charger 2), and a VR Link port.
The rear side offers one HDMI port, 4 USB 2.0 ports, one USB 3.1 Type A port (for super charging), a second mic jack, audio line-in and audio-line out jacks, a second VR-Link (should you need to connect your headset through the rear), an Ethernet port, and finally a DC jack.
Other connectivity available built in Wi-Fi 802.11ac and Bluetooth 4.2.
Despite its smaller footprint, the 2017 MSI Trident 3 VR7RC-018US is the new hallmark that blurs the lines between desktop and small gaming consoles. Now you can game on a PC that fits into your living room drawers comfortably with a device basically the size of PlayStation 4, and Xbox consoles.
The desktop brags of an Intel Kaby Lake Core i7-7700 processor running on a custom built motherboard with Intel H110 chipset and 3.6 GHz processing speeds. Moreover, when working on intense loads of work, the maximum Turbo frequency spikes to 4.2 GHz, which is impressive no matter how you look at it. It shares more than one similarity with the ASUS’ new VivoPC X small form factor PC, also recently released.
Speaking of motherboards, the motherboard has 2 sections for DDR4 SODIMM, each support as much memory as 16GB RAM. So you can have at least 32GB of RAM if you need to expand. For gaming, it has a 3GB Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 aptly equipped for 1080p gaming. On the gaming test, it pulled of 60 fps on Grand Theft Auto and 70 fps on Heaven and Valley which affirms its gaming
