Verdict

  • Eluktronics brags of assembling one of the best bare bones in the Original Design Manufacturer (ODM) industry, joining the ranks of  Sager, XOTIC PC, Schenker XMG. The Eluktronics P650HP6 See at Amazon brags of a powerful combination of features that make it shine among its gaming counterparts: Intel® Core i7-7700HQ Quad Core processor, and Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 with 6GB GPU, a 16GB DDR4 2400MHz RAM, 256 GB M.2 SATA III SSD drive and 1TB HDD SATA III for large storage. All these specs make the Eluktronics P650HP6 incredibly fast and a force to reckon with in the gaming arena. It handles tasks just as good as the industry leading laptops and stands out for it budget friendly price. It receives our Editor’s recommendation as a budget gaming laptop.

DESIGN AND FEATURES

The Eluktronics P650HP6 is adorned with a deep black cover brushed with aluminum on the palm rest, lid and bottom. The Eluktronics design is simple yet elegant; the corners are neatly trimmed and smooth, but all-in-all the laptop won’t necessarily turn heads as an ROG or MSI would. It shares a similar look with its brother the Eluktronics N850HK1 Pro Premium Gaming Laptop; an excellent performance laptop reviewed a while ago.

Clevo built this laptop screen to be 15.6″ and Full HD, but the screen owes its origins from LG®; certainly looks more like the LG Phillips LGD046E. Additionally, the 1920 x 1080 pixel screen is IPS which offers better wide viewing angles.  It also brags of 60Hz (response time for gamers) which is quit reassuring for modern title gamers. The screen Anti-Glare helps fend off reflections allowing everything on display to look great.

On size matters, the Eluktronics P650HP6 measures 15.1 x 10.6 x 1.0″ and weighs 5.29 pounds. It’s fortunate to note that Eluktronics did not throw out all concern regarding portability as is common for most gaming laptops like the newly released Acer predator 21X. In a waist test, the Acer Aspire VX5-591G-75RM laptop loses the battle by a slight margin thanks to its 1.14 inches (measures 10.45 x 15.31 x 1.14 inches) compared to Eluktronics’ 1.0 inches.

PORTS

The port selection is good. There are 2 USB 3.1 Gen 2 port (Type-C) that found a home here, 3 USB 3.0 Ports, HDMI® 2.0 (with HDCP) for connection to the external monitor, 2 Mini DisplayPort v1.4, a Gigabit Ethernet, 2-in-1 Audio Jack (Headphone & S/PDIF output), 1 Microphone jack, 1 Line out jack and a 6-in-1 SD Card reader slot.

PERFORMANCE

On performance cycles, we had no qualms with the Eluktronics P650HP6. Thanks to the state of the art processor, it is a speed racer. The P650HP6 is equipped with an Intel® Core i7-7700HQ Quad Core processor (2.8-3.8GHz TurboBoost, 6MB L3 Cache). There is nothing typical about this processor as it brings forth brilliant power and delivers fast clock speeds. FYI, the Intel Core i7-7700HQ is a recently released processor (Kaby Lake H architecture), released during the CES 2017.

It allows for 1080p video streaming, easy multitasking even with half a dozen tabs open. You can view your email, browse through various websites (including highly graphic intensive ones), and stream music without the occasional pause for buffering.

The system shreds through tasks like a breeze thanks to the processor also coupled with the 16GB DDR4 2400MHz RAM, 256 GB M.2 SATA III SSD and 1TB HDD SATA III storage. The storage is plenty for movies and data but the SSD is more prevalent in helping cut down the boot time. We were glad to notice Eluktronics used its own SSD for this machine and had 3 extra slots for RAM expansion. Moving on, the only software pre-installed is the Genuine Windows® 10 Home 64-Bit which is a clean Installation.

Other than that there is no other software -No Bloatware to eat up you time uninstalling. It was nice to also experience no excessive heat issues especially when gaming and quiet running fans – you can hardly hear the fan most of the time.

Software aside, this Eluktronics laptop comes with 6GB GDDR5 VRAM NVIDIA® GeForce GTX 1060 for gaming. The card is based on Pascal architecture and works well for full HD or WQHD gaming in high to maximum settings. That said you should expect better gaming performance at high resolution. We tried a few games on our gaming test to figure out the best setting to play on. Mass Effect Andromeda 2017 managed 120 fps on low 1280 x 720 settings and 55.8 fps on high settings (1920 x 1080). Ghost Recon Wildlands 2017 and For Honor 2017 both managed above 60 fps on high settings; 67 fps and 83 fps respectively.

KEYBOARD AND TOUCHPAD

The keyboard on the Eluktronics P650HP6 is simple, wide and reliable just the way I like it for a 15 inch laptop. It isn’t mechanical as other gaming laptops like the MSI GT73VR Titan laptop, no. Well the keys are well spaced but hardly mechanical. There is also a number-pad on the right side of the keyboard and the travel is decent making it superb for long hours of typing. The keyboard is a premium Full-size Customizable Color Backlit Keyboard or simply RGB Backlight keyboard. Most gaming laptop keys have individual LED lighting, but while it is amusing, that drains the battery a lot.

The Eluktronics P650HP6 keyboard has its lighting done in groups of 3 (left, middle and right) and each section can be customized to its own color. Eluktronics however dropped the ball on the LED brightness but fortunately that just falls on the aesthetic section and doesn’t affect performance.

The keypad is also decent as it has a built-in Microsoft® Precision Touchpad (PTP). It is very responsive and making gesture & scrolling was no problem. The keypad fluidly supports multi-gestures such as five finger scrolling and the like beautifully.

Battery life

Battery performance on the Eluktronics laptop is nothing short of mediocre as is expected on 15 inch gaming laptops. The large screen among others is a dominant factor widely known for draining the battery. Other factors contributing include the RGB keyboard backlighting which however can be turned off or adjusted to lower settings to save on battery life. The battery is a 4-Cell 60WHr and come with a 200 Watt AC adapter to charge it.

Speakers

The laptop runs quite silently and the only reason for loud notice is the 2 two watts Onkyo speakers. If you troll through notebook forums trying to figure out a gaming laptop with great audio, the Eluktronics P650HP6 is a decent choice. To boost audio even further, it is installed with Sound Blaster X-fi 5 software that aids in tweeking sound performance.

This is mostly helpful if you prefer talking on speaker while on Skype calls (through the 2.0MP Full HD Webcam & Array Mic webcam). Otherwise, the headphone should deliver great audio instead, if not better (ANSP 3D sound technology on headphone output).

Configurations

Our reviewed unit, the Eluktronics P650HP6-G shares a striking similarity with the Eluktronics Pro-X P650HP6-G VR Ready 15.6″ 120Hz 5ms Gamers Edition Laptop PC See at Amazon In terms of specifications, they are in more ways than one alike save for the disparity in the name and SSD storage. Our reviewed P650HP6-G edition includes the M.2 SATA III SSD storage whereas the Pro-X series utilizes an ultra performance M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD.

In comparison, the M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD holds 4 to 5 times faster read and write speeds which obviuosly gives it an edge over our unit. Additionally, its display comes with 120Hz refresh rates and 5ms. For that reason the Eluktronics Pro-X P650HP6-G VR Ready 15.6″ 120Hz 5ms Gamers Edition Laptop See at Amazon edition is priced a few dollars more.
